stop it! Your English is better than my Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian etc etc.... At least you're trying. I see apologies on a few posts, avatars etc. Always wondered why people feel they need to apologise when they're at least giving English a shot. |
Invisible Woman 29.01.2018 19:56 |
When I registered on Queenzone a couple of times I apologized for my English. Now I hope that my posts are clear and understandable. But I still often wonder if I wrote some nonsense, ,wrong use some words etc. Not so easy. |

Completely agree with you. English is not my mother language but I can assume my English is better than 99,9% of native English speakers' Polish. . And anyway native English speakers always seem to be very kind and understanding about this. You are another example. |
Chief Mouse 31.01.2018 18:47 |
Sorry for my English.. :( *wink wink* |

Your English is way better than my Latvian, although my Latvian is way better than my English :p |

Anyone's English is WAY better than my Filipino, and I'm the only one in the family speaking English (til now, i can't even remember how i started) |

Time to nitpick: - You don't need to be perfectly fluent in a foreign language in order to criticise someone else's English level, the same way you don't need to rule a country in order to say May/Trump/Duterte/Peña is an arse. Of course, it's nice if you appreciate someone else's command of any language, but it's not by any means a must. - Conformity begets mediocrity. If you feel your English (or your guitar playing, or your public speaking, or your editing skills) could be better, there's nothing wrong with openly saying you're not content with your performance so far. It's not always self-deprecation and it's not always merely fishing for compliments. Sure, the average internet user from virtually any country speaks English way better than the average native anglophone speaks Romanian, Icelandic or Basque, but are we really meant to set the bar that low? Sure, my football playing is better than a cadaver's (only sometimes, though)... that shouldn't be enough. |

Setting the bar higher is nice, but to me it is important to be able to communicate so that others can understand, and even if some one's english is subpar, I still have been able to comprehend and understand everyone's english on this site. As far as playing a sport worse than a cadaver goes ... one can play badly and still enjoy the sport ... except for golf ... a bad day at work is better than a good day of golf. |

I didn't say anything about setting bars, I'm just saying there's no need to apologise for being weak at something. That's not the same as giving scope for mediocrity. Nor did I say that my inability to speak fluently in other languages means I'm not able to criticise - I just choose not to. Of course mediocrity is not what anyone aspires to, but if I can comprehend someone, then they shouldn't feel the need to apologise for not being perfect. If they're not communicating well, then that's where I'll point them in the right direction. As for the Scotland comment Holly - you can feck right off :p We'd demolish your mob any day! |

As an Englishman, I have to say that because there are so many languages around the world we decided to conquer and colonise it: it was far easier! LOL Kudos to everyone whose native language is NOT English yet speaks it well enough to hold a conversation. You really put some of us lazy Englander's to shame. |

Can't see any of the icons, but if you float the cursor around near where they should be, it works! |

You know what, if someone has to apologize for their English because it is not their native language, then 99.9% of the English writers, whose native language is English, should apologize for their spelling. |
Sebastian 09.02.2018 12:00 |
Most people cannot speak their own language, be it English, Japanese, Hungarian, etc. The point is, nobody 'should' apologise, but people 'may' choose to if they feel they're not quite at a standard they deem acceptable for themselves. |

Finally somebody wrote it in a way, which makes it more able to be understood! :') Seb is from, Colombia? And he has a better flow in this language than myself, from LATAM also. The fact that my writing may be of little intelligibility, bothers me a bit. |

Thistleboy1980 wrote: I think BETA's writing is just fine. Didn't realise Seb was from Columbia - just thought he was a posh Englishman ;) :pActually, it's Colombia without a single 'u' n_n It's a common mistake but there you have it... it stems from 'Columbia' and 'Colombia' being homophones - and the fact most people are used to seeing 'Columbia Records' or 'District of Columbia' or 'British Columbia' (and, of course, 'Christopher Columbus', whom the country is named after)... It gets worse for German speakers, for instance, since the country is spelt Kolumbien in that language. |

I know...was just waiting for the correction ;) |

I suppose it's one of the most often mis-spelt countries, together with Kyrgyzstan, Uruguay, Bosnia and Herzegovina and, of course, Liechtenstein. |
Thistle 13.02.2018 01:46 |
Misspelt or misspelled (American). Either will do ;) :p Of course, I'm pulling your leg - but you're right, many common misspellings of those countries. I've never understood why people misspell Uruguay, it's one of those that has a lot of bite. Wee Luis Suarez joke there.... |
Sebastian 13.02.2018 02:12 |
It's a bit counter-intuitive, with the triphthong at the end. |
Thistle 13.02.2018 16:59 |
Tripthong? I thought that's what all the show-offs wore at the beach? |

I remember some very old times on this site when I used to be mistaken for an Englishman, a 30/40-year-old one, mind you! I still wonder why, not to mention that looking back now it makes me chuckle. All because my command of English wasn't great back then and I was nowhere near 30 years of age, or 40, I was even a bit too far from turning 20, lol. Nonetheless, a lot has changed since. |
