First post didn't work. I'm new to Queenzone. Anyway, let's see if this works. I've recently gotten on a Queen kick and I've been working like a dog trying to find the best versions of Queen's Live Career with Freddie (1970 - 1986). I've come up with a pretty good list. It's from a selection of different forums I've come across, different comments from Youtube videos of bootlegs, and personal preference. Please help me fill in some of the blanks, and also feel free to discuss narrowing down options for best version. The songs are in order of the albums, the versions are in no particular order. This is the Youtube Playlist Link: link Keep Yourself Alive: Manchester 1973, Detroit 11/18/1977, Boston 1/30/1976, Hammersmith 12/26/1979, Newcastle 12/4/1979 Doing All Right: New York 12/2/1977, Earls Court 6/6/1977, Budokan 5/1/1975 Great King Rat: Providence 4/27/1974, Tokyo 5/1/1975 My Fairy King: Osaka 5/15/1985 Liar: Glasgow 1973, Newcastle 12/4/1979, Tokyo 5/1/1975, Zurich 4/16/1982, Detroit 11/18/1977 Modern Times Rock 'N' Roll: Milwaukee 3/2/1976, Providence 4/27/1974, Portland 4/28/1974 Son & Daughter: Tokyo 5/1/1975, Rainbow 3/31/1974 Father to Son: Oxford 11/20/1973, Both Rainbow Gigs, Okayama 4/28/1975 White Queen: Both Rainbow Gigs, Earls Court 6/6/1977, Hammersmith 12/24/1975, London 5/13/1978, Tokyo 1975 Ogre Battle: Glasgow 1973, Boston 1/30/1976 The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke: Rainbow 3/31/1974 The March of the Black Queen: The Hague 12/8/1974, Hammersmith 12/24/1975 Seven Seas of Rhye: Cologne 12/6/1974, Liverpool 11/1/1974, Boston 1/30/1976 Brighton Rock: Copenhagen 4/13/1978, Hammersmith 12/24/1975 Killer Queen: Liverpool 11/1/1974, Newcastle 12/3/1979, Tokyo 11/5/1985, Montreal 11/24/1981, Earls Court 6/6/1977 Flick of the Wrist: Bradford 11/6/1974, Manchester 11/26/1975 Now I'm Here: Liverpool 12/6/1979, Hammersmith 12/26/1979, Newcastle 12/3/1979, Chicago 9/19/1980, Hammersmith 12/24/1975 In the Lap of the Gods: Manchester 10/30/1974, Rainbow (November), Budokan 5/1/1975 Stone Cold Crazy: Houston 12/11/1977, Boston 1/30/1976 Bring Back That Leroy Brown: Milwaukee 3/2/1976, Hammersmith 12/24/1975 In the Lap of the Gods... Wow - great first post. You really have done your homework. Makes me want to re-listen to so many things again. One show you haven't mentioned is Buenos Aires 3-8-81. Give that audience tape a listen - it's one of the best shows they ever played. |
Keith Stone 31.12.2017 21:19 |
I also love that Buenos Aires show! I know they did great versions of Jailhouse Rock, Somebody to Love, and Love of My Life. Need Your Loving Tonight is pretty funny on that night though. Do you think any songs from that gig belong in this list? |
MemeOverlord69 31.12.2017 21:45 |
Best version of Hangman is Milwuakee 1976. |

Also, this list looks like a complete copy paste of the list I made on reddit (with a few additions here and there). |

The dates are month/day/year (unless I accidently mixed one up. Also, as an update, I'm currently trying remaster these selections, so if anyone wants to make suggestions for best version, let me know. |

I propose adding: Liar (Santa Monica '75 for the wild cowbell intro and the raw "buzzsaw" guitar sound) We Will Rock You ... slow (Houston '77 for Roger's harmonies and drum syncopations) Love of My Life (Houston '77 for the beautiful acoustic guitar rendition free of audience participation) I Want to Break Free (Knebworth '86 for the powerful audience participation) Crazy Little Thing Called Love (2nd Wembley '86 for Spike's additional keyboards) |
Keith Stone 02.01.2018 03:27 |
Thank you guys for giving me more suggestions. I've never done this before, and I'm glad to see both newbies and oldies contributing! |

See what a fool I've been-Golders Green 1973(probably the closest to the BBC version)and champions video shoot 1977(numerous high notes free of cracks) |

Imagine...08/12/80 @ Wembley Arena. Only time i think it was played live ( may be wrong though ) Great list and would be good if this could ever be released in a scaled back kind of form as part of a deluxe live retrospect spanning their entire touring career. Funny i have been on a Queen listening kick again as well, been a while but no one better live in my opinion ( even on their off days ) |

For See What A Fool I've Been, might I suggest the 3/31/1974 performance at the Rainbow and the WATC video shoot concert? |

On the topic of Queen doing Imagine, there have been 3 recordings to surface so far. The first is from Wembley, then Frankfurt, then Munich. At Wembley, it was the first time they would do it live, and Brian keeps messing up the chords while Freddie tries to save it, and it comes back when Roger comes in. Freddie also slightly changes the lyrics at the bridge. At Frankfurt, I personally think there’s nothing wrong with this version. It’s in great quality, Brian gets the chords right, Roger comes in like the original song does, and Freddie sounds great! For Munich, it starts halfway through, which is a bummer. Other than that, it’s a decent version. Now after listening to the versions, Frankfurt 12/14/1980 is the best live version for me. |

I wouldn't list Hammersmith or Rock in Rio for the best versions of Somebody to Love. Hammersmith is good but is completely eclipsed by Newcastle, which is cleaner and more daring and just all-around better. Rock in Rio is a really good version but the thing is with Rio is that it would be hard to compare it against pre-Works Tour versions because there's no vocal solo, which is a big part in defining each version of the song. |
MC_Sandman 06.01.2018 22:36 |
Same thing for Bohemian Rhapsody. I'd personally go with one of the Leiden versions as being better than Budapest. |

Thank you guys for the input! MC_Sandman, my list was actually very (but not solely) influenced by comments you have made on versions. I appreciate your thoughts. Honestly, I didn't think Budapest's BoRhap was as good as some had made it out to be, but I went ahead and included it. |

Yeah, Budapest doesn't really do it for me. Second Leiden, on the other hand... |
