I'm not the uploader, just for info: link QUEEN Los Angeles, California, USA The Forum December 22, 1977 Audience Recording (2nd Gen.) LINEAGE: unknown recording equipment -> master -> cassette -> TDK D-90 cassette -> Nakamichi CR-7A azimuth-adjusted playback -> Apollo 8 Thunderbolt Interface -> Pro Tools 10 -> WAV -> pitch adjustment -> FLAC I got this tape from a childhood buddy of mine who bought it at a San Diego record fair in the early 80's. It's only a 90 minute tape (pictures included), so the last few songs are missing. It was so long ago that he forgets if there was a second tape, and he says it's entirely possible that it was there but he didn't buy it because he saw “White Christmas” on the track listing and just grabbed that tape (he wasn't a big Queen fan but interested enough to hear them do that song). He said he remembers the dealer saying he got it from the taper, and that the copies he was selling were copies of his, which (if that’s all true) would make this a second generation copy. The tape sat in his basement for ages but he found it earlier this year after rummaging through his tapes for the first time in years, and wanted it to be heard for the 40th anniversary of the show. Knowing that I am a music collector and sharer, he sent it to me to digitize and share. I’m happy to be able to present it to the community. And, while I am not the world’s biggest Queen collector, this show is rare; as far as I can tell, it hasn't circulated before now - it isn't listed on queenconcerts.com or bootlegzone. As far as quality, it is not great but listenable (sample attached). SET LIST: 01. We Will Rock You (normal and fast version) 02. Brighton Rock 03. Somebody to Love 04. It's Late 05. Hearing this show it's safe to say the extremely positive reviews we've had for years are truly correct. This is one of Queen's finest and most thrilling shows EVER! We should really find a way to convince the band/QPL to release the COMPLETE mono soundboard they OBVIOUSLY have for this concert. It'll probably sound the same as Sleeping on the sidewalk from the recent release (which is absolutely wonderful!). How can we make this happen, folks? Let's start a campaign and get noticed on the social media (by posting a YouTube video of this White Christmas all over twitter and facebook??). Maybe Chief Mouse should do his magic and create a video for it at his usual high level... If we're clever the global press can be reached. I really believe this is possible. What do you all think? |

Indeed, it all comes down to Brian so we have to find the right way to reach out to him, in a way so that he gives thought to it and can be convinced. And that's why we need some sort of action with many people participating... |

bootLuca has a point here / It really is a gem and when you hear the "...and may all your Christmases be... " and then you just want so much to hear Freddie for the high note and give a big ending to the song aaand.... he chooses the lower octave. Well... and to think that we could hear that in an excellent quality had not QPL vetoed against it.... |
QueenFan11 20.12.2017 17:25 |
Unbelievable! FIVE new recordings in one year. First we get the earliest known NOTW show (Detroit 1977), than what people have been wanting for over a decade, a brand new Crazy tour show (Liverpool 1979) than a full version of the "Chest Wig" show (Nagoya 1975), then we get one from the mostly undocumented period between Dallas and NYC (Providence 1978) and now we end the year with one of the most famous uncirculated gems in Queen bootlegging (this one)! My sincere thanks for all those who have helped bringing these pieces of history out of the attics and into this forum. Who knows what shows can circulate next? A 1970-1972 concert? Gothenburg 1982 (opening night of HS tour)?, An earlier Game Tour show (6/30-7/5)?, another Sun City concert? The possibilities are endless! |

You say that, somebody (presumably BHM or RMT) edited Freddie's Wembley '86 night two vocal improvisation ahead of its use in the Q+AL 2017 shows. It cuts out the note where his voice cracks - given how high he goes, it's hardly something to censor... |

I actually just listened to some of this on my Headphones. Not the best quality recording, but in my humble opinion what a performance, surely one of the best “It’s Late” is almost like the studio version, with even more energy. It would be fantastic if one of the wonderful, super clever people in this forum could clean up this recording in some way. I would love to see a review from someone like Bob. Thanks again for getting this out there, rarely get excited at my age, but this is amazing. |

' Tis the season to recognise these things Bob :p Sounds like "Tear It Up" is in it's early stages further on in the solo too. |

After listening this show yesterday I think this is one of the best Queen concert ever. And one of my favourite. The band is in the great mood. Audience also loves it. Basically every song has some great moments, even Brian's solo is phenomenal (and I noticed the 2nd Christmas song. This song was used in the famous 'Home Alone' movie from 1990). Their playing is outstanding, and their singing just as good. Freddie is VERY daring to sing many high notes and sometimes his singing is more similar to the record than usual. One of the show that definitely deserves better recording. Let's hope the taper will share his tape knowing the copy is already leaked. Queen were probably the best band in the world at that time. |

You did lawschool too if I remember correctly, didn't you? Good luck with dreaming Brian will see the 'global campaign' and release your beloved concert Raf... It will never happen. |

You conclude I'm naive because I express my wish to hear a pro recording of my favourite band on a hobby forum ? Don't you think that is jumping to conclusions? Most of your posts on this hobby forum are very negative, often riducling people and their (free time) dreams, just like you did with my initial post. My initial post was full of positivism and hope but apparently those sentiments are for you - even in this hobby context - weak features... Talking about bitterness... Whatever degree one has is totally irrelevant on this forum and I really feel sorry for you if the day you got your degree was the day you lost your ability to dream about - indeed in the wider scheme of things - futility like getting better recordings of a band you really love. I work hard every day to make a difference to people and can quite happily add that I more often than not succeed. Is a little non-realistic dreaming in my hobby hours allowed? Try it, it feels good! |

Hate to interrupt the cock fight here, but enjoy the last day of the new year! It'll be less than 24 hours before 2018 starts! The complete show from Tokyo (1979-04-13) just got posted on DIME! Awesome way to end 2017! |

My answer to that question was that I think you're a cutie. So wonderfully naive. I still think so. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing and it sure wasn't meant as an insult. Sorry you seem to take it that way. on my way up wrote: Most of your posts on this hobby forum are very negative, often riducling people and their (free time) dreamsExcuse me? I have no intention whatsoever to insult people. In my opinion I don't do that. Maybe you think different. Supersonic_Man89 I saw the documentary, is there anything people would like to know? It was not made with TV in mind, like previous docs...so there is a lot of long, uncut footage of the band rehearsing/playing - which if airing on the TV would be cut. Interestingly, the reason why this documentary was never made in the late 70's...is because nothing eventful happened apparently. Brian's string breaking during Liar seems to be it...everything went smoothly and it was hard to make an interesting narrative with the hours of footage shot. That is still the case, but the documentary is obviously a lot more interesting to us fans now as seeing a classic such as We Are The Champions being recorded/mixed is now a lot more interesting than seeing a random up and coming song from a current band having the same treatment. There's no new interviews with the band, they weren't available...but there are snippets of unused interview Brian/Roger audio material taken from interview sessions for the previous documentaries. I can reveal that originally the documentary had a very different ending than it does - originally it ended with the band playing 'White Christmas' - it was audio only but with stills and a news report of the unique performance. However, after it was edited together the band weren't too happy with it - they felt the performance wasn't that great and the audio quality, maybe not good enough. Which is a shame, but at the end of the day it was the band's call i suppose. I asked the producer if this could be released as web content or an extra...but apparently the band don't want things which they don't deem to be good enough to be released. I haven't got a perfect memory of the documentary, but if you have any questions i'll try and answer...but i am on holiday at the moment, so i'm not going to be on my computer a tremendous amount.Quote taken from link |

Cool, thanks for posting that. Thank goodness for the audience tape then, which I'm going to give a full review of here now. It took 40 years for this tape to finally get out, and while it's a stretch to even call the sound at the best of times "decent" due to the bass distortion, without a doubt it's one of the best Queen performances ever. It takes a few songs for the taper to settle into place, and by the medley the sound is pretty stable. There's a tape flip after Best Friend, and like the first few minutes of the show, the tape is clearly not in great shape, as there are pitch and sound fluctuations until it settles in again. As long as your ears can adjust to what little sound quality there is, it will bring much delight. We've heard many shows from this tour, and they were always on their game. But on this night they tap into their energy reserves and give a little extra in nearly every song. Mercury's delivery of Somebody To Love, It's Late, Liar, My Melancholy Blues, and White Man are amongst his best ever, and the band, now with 25 shows on the tour under their belt, are tight and focused. Venues like Madison Square Garden and the LA Forum were seen as an apex for British bands, as the music business at the time revolved around success in the US. Listening to British bands play the Forum (I'm also thinking of Yes, Stones, and Pink Floyd shows taped by Mike Millard) is the sound of English dreams coming true. And although this Queen tape sounds nowhere near as good as those, the performance is equal to those bands peaking at the same venue around the same time. There are a couple small musical flubs to note - Brian comes in a couple bars late for the initial We Will Rock You guitar solo, and since the backing track with the explosion is on tape, he gets cut off for the last couple bars of the solo. Later, his pitch shifter doesn't work during Get Down Make Love, resulting in the middle section being cut short. But besides that, as well as their somewhat under-rehearsed yet warmly received one-off attempt of White Christmas, they nail pretty much everything else to perfection. Listening to American audience tapes of Queen from this period can be pretty interesting, as the comments from the audience members really give you a sense of what it was like to attend shows back then. During Brighton Rock you can hear the two tapers speaking to one another about the tape recorder - "you hold it!" When Brian May says "and now for something completely different" before Love Of My Life, one of them is reminded of the Monty Python film. Before the band play '39, they wonder who will sing the lead. And when Brian is sustaining notes with his EBow at the beginning of his solo spot, this same guy says "earthquake!" Apparently they only had a single 90 minute tape, so the last hour or so of the show is missing. Maybe one day we'll be lucky enough to hear the crazy encores. |

If only they filmed this show instead of Houston... Of course there is nothing wrong with Houston but Inglewood performance is on another level. And in Houston they didn't play It's Late, Spead Your Wings, White Christmas, and did those crazy encores. Would be amazing to watch all of that. This is in my top 5 Queen shows probably. |
