Dodgy stuff. In TYMD there is a lyric that says “it’s gottta be tonight, my LITTLE SCHOOL-BABE”. Are we comfortable with that? Should it be called out? I mention it because we haven’t heard a view on recent celeb sex-scandals from our Queen people. It’s a Brian May (exclusively heterosexual as far as I’m aware) lyric and suggests masculine power-based domination. Discuss? |

In the UK the legal age for sexual consent (and marriage) is 16. Considering one can stay on at school until they are 18; it is very common to find 16+ pupils engaged in sexual relationships. That has always been the case, even when the song was written. So if she is over 16, and still at school - what is the problem? (Unlike David Bowie for example who had a predilection for 14 year old girls; Now that IS paedophilia whatever way you look at it!) PS: Don't shoot the messenger. Just Google "David Bowie" and ""Paedophilia". It's not that hard! |

1) WHAT has "gotta be tonight"? Not clear it's sex. 2) I always took "boiling up inside" as anger. Not anything else. And, no, I'm not naïve. |

Yes Dyson; I am a huge Zeppelin fan - but I have a personal take on it. As human beings we all suffer from cognitive dissonance to some degree. I get over mine in that I can seperate art from the creator. This I call the baker syndrome. Simply, I want to buy a sticky bun for my morning coffee. The olde bakery I buy my buns has the best pastries in town. Do I really care about the baker's personal life? Do I really care about the baker's past? Well no actually! I am quite happy to shop there because I enjoy the product - not the creator. In otherwords, Kevin Spacey "may" be an ars*hole in real life, but that does not invalidate "Unusual Suspects" or "House of Cards". Jimmy Page could well be a sexual preditor and as such needs to face criminal charges; but that does not invalidate "Stairway to Heaven" as a great piece of music. If that WAS to be the case, there would be no art at all surviving beyond the middle ages, and as for music, anyone jumping on borad the Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis or Chuck Berry bandwagon? I never really understood the BBC stance on Gary Glitter. Yes. Without any shadow of doubt Glitter deserves to be in prison. But does that mean his music is any less valid than that of the Sex Pistols, Jim Gordon, Joe Meek or Phil Spector? After all, they are all convicted killers (murderers if you will) and yet the BBC still play their music without any conscience. "Want to be in my gang" anyone? |

We can understand the lyrics like thoughts from a young boy or a teenager, about the same age of the girl he is referring to. I don't see any problem in that. |

Its written from a Schoolboys perspective read the lyrics and that is pretty obvious. As a schoolboy when I heard it first it was a bit of an anthem. Normal people who have lived through the ages of 14 to 18 will relate exactly to the lyrics and as Freddie would say "its just a song ffs" |

Because these are celebrities we know a lot more...thus we are left in this moral conundrum as to whether to give this person profit. A better example would be 'a dozen women from your village have reported that the baker acted inappropriately to them, some have even accused him of rape. He's confessed to some of this and even admitted to masturbating in a plant pot'... Do you still buy your buns off him? |

His parents were far less strict shall we say. But I've always interpreted this song as being sung by a frustrated male teen. |

I always understood this song like this:a boy loves girl very much but her parents don't like him and don't approve their relationship. He wants to take her to a crazy party but understands that his family will never accept him but he still tries and imagines that everything would be ok. if her family somehow disappeared at least one night. Everyone can understand the song in its own way. |

Well, when i wrote that post it was early in the morning after a few drinks so not to be taken TOO seriously. However, reading the responses, I suppose there are questions. Yes, it may be written from a 'schoolboy' point of view but it is still definitely written and performed by adults (sexuality of performer notwithstanding). John S Stuart makes the good point that if his baker makes good buns they are still good buns even if the baker is a paedophile. But the analogy doesn't hold. The baker's buns do not promote paedophilia whereas it is arguable that TYMD does. Same with Gary Glitter. I am not aware that any of his songs actively advocated sex with kids so why do the BBC ban on his music? 'Tie Your Mother Down' 'sounds' like an adult rocker asking a youngster, maybe groupie, to ignore parental warnings. Yes, you can argue the schoolboy point of view but we all know the industry in the 70's. Talk of 'Greeks' is irrelevant. This is about modern day laws. The church is also irrelevant for a million reasons (not least because sexual minorities have historically joined their ranks to avoid persecution - ('Your Kevin not married yet?,No, he's joining the church). My favourite post is Dyson's - 'I'm all horny now'. |
dysan 01.01.2018 08:26 |
