I have the rare case of this picture used in a print magazine. The whole context is misleading so I covered the words. My personal guess is that this pic was taken when the "Innuendo" production was moved from Montreux to London and the rides to the studio had become military convoy style.
But of course other options are on the table...
Or more concretely does anyone know where it was published in the first place ?

You could be right . Much of de production for Innuendo was done in separate studios including Metropolis studios in London
I thought that he already had one installed before the 90's. There was a story when Marc Almond visited him and said himself that Freddie had a studio on the 2nd floor ? (I suppose that he meant some audio equipment enough to record in a good quality).
Freddie is dressed very similar to the 'Headlong' video (and it was filmed in Metropolis Studio) so it would be November 1990, but in the video he didn't have so much beard and his hair looked different (above the forehead): link

Strange at that time they didn't install a studio in his house. Maximum comfort and none of this creeping around.
Who knows, maybe they did.
You know, separating work from your home its something quite important. That could be their reasoning.
Or, maybe they had their equipment to record their demos, but for the actual songs they supposedly preferred recording in a studio.
I have clippings that feature this photo, which is on the second one: link link
no idea about the storyline or the date taken (I'm guessing late 1990 to mid 1991), but I know that this was a 2-page tribute issued in a german 'Bravo' magazine around time when Freddie died.

Yes, I have this article but I think that it isn't the main source. I guess that this was taken by a NOTW / SUN reporter or a freelancer...MAYBE ...
I have seen this before but not in as good quality as this. Freddie seems to be wearing a shirt (I think I see a collar) , whereas in the Headlong video he's wearing a yellow sweatshirt.
He seems to look (even) more frail compared to the Headlong video so i actually think this is spring 1991 where he also spent a considerable amount of time in Montreux.
Also he isn't wearing a jacket so it seems the weather is at least room temperature, which makes it unlikely it's autumn 1990. It's also unlikely it's summer 1990 because he is looking thinner than the Headlong video, which is november 1990.
it's more likely spring 1991.
