This is the one that got me started with this band 40 years ago!!! Been hooked ever since! |
mooghead 28.10.2017 19:54 |
It was the first one with 'filler' after 5 pieces of perfection. |
Graeme Arnott 29.10.2017 04:21 |
I agree Moog, I think it was the last album in the so called classic queen era, after so many quotes from Brian stating Queen were an albums band they seemed to switch focus after NOTW. |
mike hunt 29.10.2017 05:16 |
Nonsense Moog.....Queen2, one of Queens best albums had a song worse than anything on Notw. The song is loser in the end. Didn't fit the album at all. The great SHA had She Makes Me. I'll take the weakest track on News over that one. News Of The World has aged well. Every song is at least decent. Even the weaker songs I like. While it's not my favorite, It's still one of their best. Top 5 or 6 depending on my mood for me. They were still an albums band until after The Game. The 80's they were a singles band I must admit. |
mooghead 29.10.2017 08:09 |
Well there is no right or wrong, I love Loser in the End. Get Down Make Love is atrocious. My dad's bigger than your dad etc.... |
dysan 29.10.2017 09:14 |
IMO I thought ADATR was the first to be considered weaker. I think the placing and unnecessary length of YTMBA overshadows the vibe on that record and it's not onw I listen to much - but obviously it has some of my all time faves. Then again, JAZZ has loads of rubbish on it, but as a whole it's one of my faves. I consider All Dead to be a skipper on NOTW - again, it's placing ruins the album for me. Stops the side 1 fun (all) dead. |

Just some recollections. Just after my 17th birthday, I clearly remember placing the needle on the disk. I'd had heard rock you and champions before, still I was intrigued by Brian's 'moan' as it started. Then, Sheer Heart Attack just blew me away. I played it again, and again. Obviously the lyrics did the trick for me but it was also the energy. Fight From the Inside has this slow groove, reminding me of Bowie's dabblings in plastic soul. Turn the record over and...WTF? Mooghead is perfectly entitled to his opinion, but I loved it. Freddie took his piano licks to another world and the band responded beautifully. Deaky's pops and slides, Roger's stabs on the roto toms and drum bursts, while Brian coaxed all the weird noises from his guitar. It was weird, bold, left of field and anything but 'soft'. I could go on about the rest of the album but so could many of you. Happy memories. |
dysan 29.10.2017 09:41 |
So weird to think that when I got the album (my first with my own money) it was only about 7 years old and back then that seemed like forever. Now it's 40. Woah. I was only aware of WWRY and WATC (I only had GH1 and the debut (taped for me for 50p by my brother's friend) but to a kid of 8 the cover was the big selling point. Really really happy memoires. |

Get Down Make Love is pretty good, not an all time favorite of mine but still good. I know Trent Renzor and Slash/ Talyor Hawkins were fans of the song, and whenever it's reviewed by a music critic they say it's one of the high points of the album, so it did have It's share of fans. Of course that doesn't mean you have too like it. We all know music is Subjective.......A Day At The Races is a work of Art...not a bad song on it. |
Dr Magus 29.10.2017 19:00 |
Like all of NOTW except Who Needs You. Great guitar work from Brian and John but the song itself is utter shit. In fact i'd so far as to say it is shit bordering on wank. |
dysan 29.10.2017 19:06 |
But wanking is fun and WNY is fun too. All Dead All Dead is like being moaned at by an Aunt you don't like. |

Love all their 70s albums ,NOTW was great. Great vibe! |
mike hunt 29.10.2017 21:16 |
Me too....Jazz had the most filler of the 70's. But I still like it a lot. |

I know.....Races was and still is considered the weak version of Opera by the average Rock fan. When i first really got into Queen and Read book after book about them, I remember reading a lot of those opinions about the album, that it was a bad attempt at recreating ANATO, though one book I read praised it while stating Jazz lacked the excellence of Both Opera and Races. In all honesty It took me a while too appreciate Races, perhaps I didn't give it a proper listen at first. I was digging the first 4 albums at that point. Eventually when I bought it on CD and gave it a proper listen I loved it. Opera still has the edge for me, but Races is a top album and grossly underated. They did make the right move in changing direction with News Of The World. |
dysan 31.10.2017 08:09 |
I honestly think for me, even though it has a longer run time, ADATR falls into the trap of feeling very slight at only 10 tracks. And the aforementioned album killer YTMBA placed so early on. Perhaps a straight swap with LA and remove those tedious vocal clownings that bookend it. |
dysan 31.10.2017 08:10 |
Like I say, I dig most of it but curates egg stuff is happening. |
mike hunt 31.10.2017 12:06 |
Disagree.....Take My Breath away is one of the best on the album. |

If I remember correctly, many of the so called experts slagged ADATR off as the poor man's ANATO. If the release order of those albums had been reversed, they would have said ANATO was a weak copy of ADATR. It was just bad form in the UK to say anything positive about Queen in those days. |
mike hunt 31.10.2017 14:45 |
Opera did have a little more balance between the Rock songs and the softer stuff. Races only had 2 Rockers in Tie Your Mother Down And White Man. Maybe it could have used one Epic like The Prophet Song to put it on Opera level... Side two of ANATO is unbeatable for me. Both albums are works of art. From the artwork to the music. |

dysan wrote: Fair enough. You soppy thing you.So you don't like Love Of My Life? Don't get me wrong I love the heavier side of Queen and music in general. Couldn't blame anyone for not liking Soppy songs as you say, but I am getting older and appreciate these soppy songs as long as they're creative. Like Love of my life and you take my breath away. I also like heavy stuff like hardcore and Thrash Metal. Many different parts of my personality. |

Fireplace wrote:Yea, but for these critics it's about trying too sound cool. Queen wern't considered cool like Zep or The Who and then later on Punk. What makes me laugh is when I see aging middle age men these days that put down Queen and try and be all punk, saying Punk was the best thing to come out of the 70's, while dissing Queen. These old ass men trying too stay young forever. Listen to those Punk records today then listen to Classic Queen and The Who and you tell me what's better. Tell me who won that battle?mike hunt wrote: I know.....Races was and still is considered the weak version of Opera by the average Rock fan. To be honest, I didn't like LOML on the album, but I love it on Live Killers. I'm soppy too. I think Nevermore is incredible. You're right about age changing opinion - Queen speak to me far more personally than say Bowie. But there's something about LOML and YTMBA that for me fall the wrong side of cheese. But with all things Queen, it's the differences in what we like that makes this place interesting. There's definitely no right or wrong. At the end of the day, we all love it. |
mike hunt 31.10.2017 20:08 |
Let me guess.....the first 2 or 3 Queen records are your favorite...those were the heavier ones. |
dysan 31.10.2017 20:11 |
I probably listen to Jazz, The Game and Hot Space most if I'm honest. I can honestly say for various reasons that I hold each Queen album in equal favour. |
