If your first instinct from hearing these was negativity, then you really need to give your head a shake. Dipping into a band's archive really doesn't get much better than this. |

When the companion discs for the Zeppelin albums came out a couple years back, there was not a single peep of squabble on the Zeppelin forums. Just pages upon pages of people dissecting every minute detail and marvelling in the overall significance of what they were hearing. Why are some Queen fans different? Indeed, they are comps - and they are still magnificent. Freddie Mercury's outtakes are still better than most singers' final takes. He was just so unbelievably good. I already expected them to mix different alternate takes, but WATC is what I expected, wonderful! WWRY not so much, but I'll take anything remotely new in terms of studio recordings. Alas, I don't want to buy such a huge box set for a single disc. Any word on different, smaller editions? |

I was quite prepared for hissy, boxy demo versions. The sound quality is amazing! To be honest, the first time I heard the WWRY solo I thought Brian fell over and hit the ground guitar and all halfway through the solo, getting back on his feet only for the last chords. Hint for those who can't hear any difference with the originals: check the track length. Take 37.000 indeed. |

Unbelievable! WWRY guitar solo was very interesting! And to hear Brian sing the chorus at the beginning is amazing. The idea is there already! WATC no words... So this is how Freddie sang in the outtakes? This man was genius. The ending part is wonderful. I'm not sure about this but I tend to prefer this take for Freddie's lead vocal. |
Arnaldo "Ogre-" Silveira 05.10.2017 22:44 |

This raw CD is likely supurb, but is not worth shelling out $150 for the box set. If this box set was issued without the LP, I would grudingly be willing to pay up to $80 for a four disk box set (while noting that the four disk Rainbow box set cost less than $60). |

This is indeed the sort of gems we can expect to see throughout the second disc as advertised; however it still doesn't make up for the fact that the box should be a lot less in price, or alternatively have two or three discs like this, or be sold with the vinyl separately to justify the price tag. |

Remember the "good old days" when you could pick up these things shelved in a plastic sleeve around a digipak marked "EXPANDED EDITION" and they retailed for about twice the price of a regular cd, because there were TWO? I think this was around 18 or more years ago that it BEGAN. ....usually from MCA/UNIVERSAL (WINK WINK), or a property of CBS/COLUMBIA (*i own expanded versions of SRV, SANTANA, THE WHO & BLACK SABBATH albums) ...they usually featured alternate mixes. ..and were mostly available overseas. Yeah. About $24-29 bucks depending on the retailer. I remember those. This reminds me of that, ...only super INFLATED. Yeah. That's the word. Since i will likely pay rent and car. ...I'll probably miss out on this set and only grab the tracks from disc 3 (cd2) from online sources. I find that pretty sad.....cause had it been packaged as a stand alone double set, or even triple disc (as everybody else does) then it'd be pretty incredible and would sell pretty well. Stupid idea, though....sorry for the ill-conceived stupidity |

liam 06.10.2017 23:33 |
Sounds great. So this is take 37 of the backing track, Freddie speaking is being picked up by the piano mic I am assuming. They have also layered on top of that a different vocal take and other guitar parts that were unused. Does anyone know which backing track take was used in the released track? |
Dean_ 07.10.2017 00:35 |
We Are The Champions is an absolute joy to the ears, especially those harmonies at the end. |
Holly2003 07.10.2017 09:04 |
Maybe I'm just a bit jaded by years of waiting for stuff like this to be released but the 'raw' takes of WWRY and WATC didn't give me the same thrill as when I heard fairy feller's master stroke on the live Rainbow release. I also have issues with the 'frankenstein' nature of these tracks. I've never liked it when non-band members tinker with songs. For example, aside from SSoR, the Hollywood records remixes were joyless exercises in increasing sales. I would rather hear a fairly complete demo than a version of the song cobbled together 40 years later by someone not in the band. When Fred said at the end of Champions 'that was a lovely feel, that's exactly how it should be', was he really referring to this vocal take or was that comment spliced in from another take? Maybe that will be explained in the album notes but I doubt it. So it's more like DoRo deliberately editing videos in a misleading way than a faithful record of what went on in the studio back in 1977. As others have said, it's better than nothing, but not worth the money and it could have been done better. |
tomchristie22 07.10.2017 10:01 |
You hear some songs so much that you lose appreciation for how amazingly put together they are. I rarely even think about We are the Champions cos it's so overexposed... But hearing it a little different like this just completely refreshes my mind on it. Just one of the most beautiful pop songs ever. Freddie's clean, full voice high 'fighting' in the second last chorus is superb. And I might like the slightly rushed, syncopated delivery of 'I ain't gonna lose' even more than what he does on the officially released version. Glad they ultimately decided to cut the last chorus and left it hanging on the V chord though. |
splicksplack 07.10.2017 11:07 |
Definitely some good stuff here but not what i was expecting. I thought these would be solid alternative versions, not loads of bits chucked together. I mean unless you edit it yourself WATC is not going on any playlist due to it being ruined for that purpose by Freddie's comments. Yes, interesting to hear what he says ONCE or TWICE but not repeatedly. Same as the interview discs with ON AIR. Unless you've had a knock on the head you're unlikely to listen to them more than twice. I hoped these would be refreshed versions of the songs to listen to repeatedly. Not with novelty band comments or the sound of someone walking into a drum in the studio |
tomchristie22 07.10.2017 11:39 |
Complaints are misplaced I think. This is the best QP is going to give - they've made clear that they're not big on releasing imperfect stuff. And realistically, it contains only a little bit less than the recent Sgt Pepper box, or the Pet Sounds Sessions, as far as actual unheard takes. |

^ Blu Ray of Wembley? Wtf? It's not even shot on film to be justified being put on blu ray given that we have full DVD's of BOTH nights released in 2011. And they're already as good quality as they can get given limitations of TV broadcast cameras at the time. Also, you're clearly deaf, mate. What did you expect, Freddie singing about gooses and cottage cheese being the champions of Mars? Brian playing an early incarnation of The Show Must Go On solo in WATC sessions? |
Chinwonder2 07.10.2017 15:39 |
By Blu-Ray release, you mean the footage that Do-Ro shot, because if so that would be fantastic. Otherwise, it's not worth the money to even consider that as Chief mentions above ^ I mean look at this, glorious footage: Of course, it's very unlikely the full gig was recorded. Lovely touches in there Chief. RE the actual recording: I know the timing of the singing is out - compared to the finished track (Fred obviously feeling his way around it) but does anyone else hear quite jarring edits between the different sections? Not a criticism, but perhaps not as tidy as they could've made it? To the earlier poster who says it's not as exciting as hearing live FFMS for the first time - obviously not, but I'd say for QP to OK this is on par with that especially considering all the goosebumps reported. |

That style of song is just not where they're at their best. and really I'm referring to content like outtakes and demos, which reveals their process in all its imperfection, as opposed to the finished product.tomchristie22 wrote: they've made clear that they're not big on releasing imperfect stuff. What about Hot Space? Those horrendous Rare Live edits? Greatest Hits III? |

While we are debating whether or not the WATC track is doctored up, I find it interesting that the promo track as released on YouTube is calling it "Raw Sessions" while the track listing on Amazon calls it an "Alternative Version." If the Amazon descriptions are accurate, the collection is made up of different offerings. "Original Rough Mix" suggests something very different than an alternative version, hopefully more like the rough mixes that were included with the most recent Zeppelin remasters. 1. We Will Rock You (Alternative Version) 2. We Are The Champions (Alternative Version) 3. Sheer Heart Attack (Original Rough Mix) 4. All Dead, All Dead (Original Rough Mix) 5. Spread Your Wings (Alternative Take) 6. Fight From The Inside (Demo Vocal Version) 7. Get Down, Make Love (Early Take) 8. Sleeping On The Sidewalk (Live in the USA, 1977) 9. Who Needs You (Acoustic Take) 10. It's Late (Alternative Version) 11. My Melancholy Blues (Original Rough Mix) |

Good spot, Your Fairy King. Fingers crossed. And additionally they have been released separately rather than as from the iTunes version. |

My Melancholy Blues (Original Rough Mix)My own guess of what these should be based on their titles: 'Alternative version': a new 2017 version edited together from several different takes. 'Original Rough Mix': It SHOULD (based on name) be the same performance as the album version, but just a different mix - however could be a version closer to the final edition than it is to a demo, but with some mix differences, and probably incorporating some alternative parts. Shouldn't be a 2017 comp. 'Alternative Take': a full, but different take of the track, perhaps compiled from more than one run through, but not a 2017 comp. What we will get however is another matter! |

I'd guess this is indeed what is on the forthcoming release. |

It feels like something closer to SHA in terms of the ending. Of course. ..had the band LEFT IT THAT WAY the song MAY NOT have had such immense popularity. Things to consider for an alternate universe |

Furthermore the lenght of that raw sessions uploaded on youtube is the same as announced in the press release on QueenOnline last september So I highly doubt that we are talking about 2 different versions of Rock You and Champions |

Alternatively take, early take and acoustic take are the three things that are really sparking my interest at the moment. Alternative versions as in WWRY and WATC I've enjoyed listening too and I think the vocal performances particularly are brilliant, but it now seems certain that Alternitive versions seems to imply that they a composite creations and as such never existed in their current form at the time the album was recorded. The first three I've listed (together with the demo vocal of FFTI) maybe the only truly of their time studio left overs presented here. Given the possible modern composite of WATC/WWRY using original material the cynic in me would question the Original Rough Mixes as possibly being nothing more than modern remixes taken from the masters with certain parts raised/lowered/added or deleted to create what would sound like something original and unheard. I could be, and certainly hope to be, provided wrong but having giving us the lead two tracks which are possibly not quite what was created at the time I feel that it leaves the rest of the tracks open to question too |

Two things about this raw version of WWRY: first, the original ending to the guitar solo (with the extra notes) seems to have debuted on the Rick Rubin 'ruined' remix: link |

Second, it seems like the stem of the stomping captures Brian's count-in, although they don't match up perfectly: |

Makes me wonder if the guitars in these outtakes are vintage recordings or recently created on "Trigger's Broom". Once thing is for certain though, Freddie Mercury is absolutely without equal. That alternate vocal in "Champions" just drips with emotion and sensitivity as well as extreme power. |
dysan 10.10.2017 11:47 |
To clarify - the CD is called the 'Raw Sessions', and these tracks are the alternate versions from that CD and labelled as such. Rather clumsily. |
