I have been getting back into vinyl, and have been amassing mostly the new 180 gram releases. I recently acquired an old Disney World record from 1979 and was amazed by the sound. The production is so deep and layered, while the newer albums I have sound as if they are all on one layer.
Has anyone compared the old Queen albums to the new ones?
I'm pleased with the new ones, although I haven't directly compared.
I did compare some of the 2009/10 reissues to the originals. Holy moly, i'm no audiophile by any stretch, but even I could hear how absolutely awful they are. On Queen I Cymbals are just... missing.
I have the originals, all in near mint condition. Most of the originals are much better. The new version of Sheer Heart Attack sounds terrible in comparison. Another one that springs to mind is The Works. The 2015 vinyl sounds closed in, and compressed. The original sounds great. Overall, the originals are quite a lot better.
I just read the link. No way in a million years does The new version of The Works sound anywhere near as good as the original vinyl.
This is the set up I'm playing it on...
Separates include:
B&W CM10 speakers.
Naim CD5 XS CD player.
Linn Akurate DSM pre-amp / streamer.
Linn Klout power amp.
Linn LP12 turntable, with Ittok LVII tonearm and Linn Adikt cartridge.
B&W P7 headphones.

So what we need is someone with decent ears, a decent setup who is able to create a list of which sound best.
And ironically QPL have recently paid Bob Ludwig and the rest of their audio team to supposedly already do this! Unfortunately they sometime equate 'getting hiss, pop and crackles out' and 'making quiet bits louder' to 'sounding better', which just ain't so.

I also have all Queen albums in mint and some near mint codition.
I have two sealed the Works from Capitol. I opened one and compare with 2015.
I did the same for SHA and Innendo.
I found that the New Lps have cleaner sound, a little compression. But as the link suggest is done for better results.
I don't have any problem with the little compression, the 2015 vinyl sounds better on these three albums.
I did check the EQ, it looks faithful to the original, Maybe they did some corretions.
A friend told me, he liked Queen new Vinyl because they have the depth of analog sound and the clarity of digital.
All this is just personal taste.

On what set up was you listening to it on? Because on mine, it's absolutely not the case that they sound as good as the originals. The ones I've mentioned in particular, Sheer Heart Attack, and The Works, they just don't come close. Bare in mind I'm talking about the U.K originals here, not the U.S ones.
Actually, this has also been spoken about on the Steve Hoffman forum, and for the most part, the view is that the new ones aren't a patch on the originals, but they look nice.
It's a long thread to go through.... link

I Just gave a reading, it has many interesting opinion. However few gave a comprehensive analysis about the sound.
My system is, Devon DP-300F Turnable, Yamaha A-S2100 amplifier, speakers Yamaha Soavo 3 Birch
Whereabouts do the LPs in the 'The Complete Works' box set sit quality-wise? These never seem to get discussed in any of the discussions about different editions - are they simply exact copies of the original vinyl presses and represses up to that point, without any remastering or other 'touch ups'?
As an aside, my favoured listening is FLAC rips of the earliest CDs I could find (especially Japanese issues). There was a huge backlash about the first RCA Bowie CDs from the 80s due to the sound but these days they are highly sought after as the connoisseurs choice. The earliest 'untouched' digital sources of the masters. I like to think the same is true with the first Queen CDs. I'd say being an audiophile is 90% all in the mind anyway.

^^ this I'm curious. I think I've never played any disc of my set !!
And what about those EMI reissues released in batches ... was that in 2008 ? what do you think of their quality?

The EMI reissues were TERRIBLE. As were the Hollywood Records editions, which I believe were just exactly the same. I have the UK & the US reissue of Queen, and it is one of the worst LPs I have ever heard, and they both sound the same. I am not an expert at ALL, but even to me it was obvious it was a total botched job.
It is my understanding they used the original CD Remasters, and did no further work, just cut them for vinyl and shat them out on the shelves. End of.
Nice covers though.
^^thanks for the feedback Pingfah
I have most of the original UK pressings and other intl. releases, plus The Complete Works and some of those EMI reissues (barely played and did not remember their sound quality).
Didn't bother with the Studio Collection box, but will eventually get QII, Innuendo and MIH sooner or later.
