Guess i'll paraphrase what fr1986 said for Knebworth: Today marks the 40th Anniversary of Queen's concert at Hyde Park and there is still no proper release of it. I'd complain about why a live album is not going to be released this year, but screw it, let's talk about the concert shall we? Any reminiscences are more than welcome here |

This was the first Queen concert I was allowed to go to as I was now 15 and bullet proof. I went with three friends from school and took the bus and underground to the venue. We somehow managed to blag some large bottles of cider on route. As I live in London it wasn't and epic journey, and we got there in the afternoon and saw all of the opening acts. It was a nice sunny day and I noticed there were some people up trees (I thought about that idea briefly). I can remember what seemed to be a rather long set from Steve Hillage, Supercharge and Kiki Dee with her cardboard cut out of Elton. We were reasonably positioned and everyone was sitting down at this point. We decided this was not good enough, and after a few ciders came up with a plan. It was basic, get to the front. Somehow we almost manged it, but then there was a cider induced problem - I needed to go to the toilet. So off I went to the ''cesspit'' which seemed like a mile away, this is a bad idea I'm thinking. Soon the band would be on stage and I'm back where I started, how was I going to find my mates again? Head down - Once more unto the breach. Not only did I manage to find my mates, they had accomplished our mission of front stage status. Into begins, eyes wide open, mouth open, ears ready to receive. There were some cries of sit down coming from way behind, but it wasn't going to happen, no way ever. This was my favourite band, the best band in the world. ...... and the rest you just have imagine for yourself. I am just off to a festival in Walthamstow Village today, so I will think of this day forty years ago as I watch the bands play. |

I tried to blend QTV and antiden's versions. Something went wrong about compression, but doesn't it look better? link |
Killer_queenIII 18.09.2016 06:21 |
Didn't look bad at all. I wouldn't mind the vocals being so high up the mix. @Kurgan: Guess that was some good cider you and your friends got there hahaha. I wish there were pictures of Kiki Dee with that cardboard Elton that day. Just imagining that alone made me laugh. Shoot, guess I should thank guys like Antiden, Kurgan and several others who shared different versions of the video for everyone to see. |

Nice story Kurgan. Oh how we all envy you :-) I was a month old when this legendary show took place. 1976 was a blistering hot summer but a great one. |

I remember listening to it on the radio, wished I'd recorded it ! But it really is time they gave it an official release, maybe with a documentary ? All the footage we've seen seems okay, even if we don't get the full show ! Come on QP sort it out !! |

I thought it was confirmed not too long ago that the Queen set was NOT broadcast? I'm sure I read fairly recently that the Queen set was scheduled to be broadcast by Capitol but it was pulled by the band or bands management before the show. |
Barry Durex 20.09.2016 02:00 |
To those who say it was broadcast. When exactly, on the day, a short time later, some time later or years later? |

OK I know my memory sucks, so I'm not gonna argue, but wasn't this about the 2005 QPR concert? If I remember correctly (which I probably don't) they wanted to broadcast the 2005 concert live and play before it the 1976 concert, and none of it happened. Also, does anybody know what is the source of the Steve Hillage Band soundboard recording? Sounds like a radio broadcast to me. |
Vocal harmony 20.09.2016 07:34 |
Not sure if it was Capital, or another london based comercial station, but there was a broadcast from the Hyde Park 2005 soundcheck. I wonder if the same was done in 76. But not the actual gig. |

Would the band go to the bother of shooting the show and recording to multitrack only to allow a radio station to to broadcast it live, mistakes and all? And surely it would have surfaced by now. |

Conflicting memories: brian's official site says it was broadcast (but this is just probably cut and pasted from other sources): link This site says it was recorded but never broadcast: link This site says it was braodcast, and gives a very precise "83 min" running time: link The "OFFICIAL" word from QOL is as follows: "......finally the historic free show in Hyde Park, to an estimated 150,000 people. This event was not only filmed, but also broadcast on Capital Radio. It gained the band enormous respect in the music business, and confirmed their entry into rock's first division": link Does the QOL piece act as definitive proof that it WAS broadcast, or just yet MORE definitive and conclusive proof that the writers of the official blurb pieces haven't got a bloody clue?!??! There are probably countless more sources, but just thought I'd add these to the mix for discussion! |

The show was filmed and recorded, and "Now I'm Here" was included on the Atlantic double album of the week of gigs. Unfortunately, ITV only included two Queen numbers in their film of the event, but the entire concert was shown on U.S. TV, and at last year's Queen convention. It included great versions of "Save Me", "Somebody To Love", "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and "Keep Yourself Alive" (guitar solo and superb kettle drum solo included). Brian's guitar solo contained the tunes of "Three Blind Mice" and "Silent Night". If Queen ever follow Bruce Springsteen in issuing a live boxed set of albums, then this show must form part of it". So I think I would take it with a pinch of salt. |

QueenTwo wrote: Yeah capital radio was only on mw though got it somewhere on an old basf c90 tape not heard it in years but remember it not being too good a sound...If you lived in the London area (like me) Capital Radio was also in stereo on 95.8 FM back in 1976. I listened to Capital all the time back in the day, so I am VERY surprised I managed to miss a broadcast announcement. You can see one of their vans in the Hyde Park clip from film roll 3 below. |

JThe Queen concert was NOT broadcasted on Capital Radio. Though a live radio program with Kenny Everett was broadcasted from Hyde Park. And from this radio show you can find the transcription disc. So Hyde Park was never broadcasted. |

I really wonder whether they have got great, releasable audio for this show... I'd really like to hear it in its entirety in professional audio quality. It's not Queen's best show for sure, but it still has its moment that I'd like to enjoy in better quality :-) |

"Further to my earlier message about Planet Rock (222.06 on DAB Digital Radio) broadcasting live from Hyde Park in July I have just heard the following on Nicky Hornes show. We will be broadcasting all day from back stage at Hyde Park, and at about 9 o'clock, whilst the guys are on stage, we will be broadcasting the original Hyde Park gig from the mid '70's in its entirety. This is not a shoddy bootleg, the band have made available to us the original master tapes of the concert, and we can assure you that they are far better than anything you may already have heard." The above was the official statement. It never happened... |
