Talked to a friend who lived in UK and he said that in UK every party (at a club or whatever) usually ends with Dont Stop Me Now (or starts with it) and multiple Queen songs are played thru the night. That been said, i started thinking that everybody always refers to Queen as the "true rock royalties" (perhaps due to the name). If you guys are from UK, then i just would ask you to put it into understandable terms - how big is Queen in UK? Today. Like if Brian speaks up on some matter - does it get published in newspapers? Or if Rog does something etc. Are they (Queen) still considered as one of the gretest by public opinion etc.? It's a bit of a complicated question but i just started wondering. Tnx. |

Songs are constantly in commercials, they are still being played on most radio stations, releases are advertised in newspapers,on tv, still magazine cover stars,Brian May is special guest on a variety of programmes, regularly on 'Breakfast TV',Sky At Night',Wildlife TV,so still pretty big matey! Brian does get on my tits with his 'Holier than Thou' opinion of his self!! |

Are you talking about how big they are as celebrities, faces or names. Or are you talking about the band as a commercial success? |

Queen are part of the fabric of society in the UK There is some sort of reference to them somewhere nearly every day |

there one of the era of rock bands that have become cultural...there probably the biggest band in terms of popularity perhaps competing with the Beatles..Freddie Mercury is now iconic which helps, everyone I suspect knows of them or there songs..they carry alot of nostalgia...look at the olympics in London..Freddie stole the show from a video wall...Brian played on Buckingham palace...there part of the wallpaper of the nation. |

Well they were featured in the London Olympics closing ceremony, that alone should probably say a lot of how Queen is still big in UK right? |

Looking back at the London Olympics footage, it is amzaing how a long dead singer, has the voice, charisma, humour and dare I say it, 'majesty' to galvanise thousands of ordinary people into singing a random exchange of nonsense syllables with total abandon, childish glee and complete sense of community. |

^^^ I agree its amazing and we as Queen fans feel sort of proud about it but Freddie is not a (long dead) singer in terms of cultural impact. He is an icon, and icons almost gain power as years go by especially since his case is strongly accociated with strugle and will-power wich are in the core of the Olympic spirit. Also he is the one who perfected the sort of communication that the Olympics ceremony celebrate. The arena / big stadium / huge amount of people triumph the likes of which represent an era long gone because the world is a different place and Lennon singing about World Peace sadly feels not that relevent i'm afraid. Having Freddie there in the screen with the "attitude" and dynamics of an athlete, blasting his unique powerfull vocals and not using words (words carry meaning so they automatically make people a bit more sceptical) but random syllables that urge you to respond is the safest bet to get the best crowd reaction. Its almost like a cliche but in a good way. |

Moreover, it's not a B&W situation: a person can be pigheaded for some things and humble for others; moreover, being pigheaded does not mean you're an arsehole; you can be (understandably) proud of what you've done and what you're capable of, and still be a nice person, which he almost definitely is. |

Umm yeah... Queen are huge in the UK. Up there with the Beatles, The Stones, Elton John and Led Zep. Maybe the Who and MJ are at that level too in the UK but I cant think of anyone else. In the US I'd say its Beatles, Stones, Eagles, Springsteen, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder Canada its The Tragically Hip... Anyhow, that's the level they are at. Think of the five biggest bands in your country.. Its comparable to that. Everyone knows who Freddie Mercury was, and pretty much everyone knows who Brian May is. Its that level of fame. They weren't always... It was the Works, Live Aid and the Magic tour that pushed them to the stratosphere. They were always big, but they became huge and embraced by the nation, not just the rock fans at that point. Then Freddie died and they sort of got locked in place. Still hated by anyone wandering the streets or the message boards who wants to be 'cool' though. Strangely the so called 'cool' musicians who the above people say are where it's at in the UK will usually say very nice things about Queen. |

I've been looking at this. Where it says "Total available certified units" on each artist, I opened them up at look at the sales for the UK. link Queen have the highest number, with Madonna coming a very close second. Then, Micheal Jackson. The Beatles and Elvis are quite a way down from those, and The Rolling Stones compared to Queen has a huge difference. The Rolling Stones overall sales in the UK are 7.500 million. Queen's overall album sales in the UK are 28.405 million. It's fascinating. But surely Queen can't be the biggest UK sellers. Going by those numbers, The Beatles must have sold more in the UK. I know Queen are big here, but that can't be right. |
Nitroboy 23.08.2016 06:06 |
They're certified numbers. Queen IS the #1 band in the UK in terms of album sales. |

However within Queen there were four extremely hard nosed characters, even the shy and retiring Deaky could stamp his feet and make life difficult. So no one gave an inch if they could help it, and i think anyone in the business has to have an edge to them and be able to stand their ground otherwise the world would swallow them up. But away from the recording studio, or rehersal, or business meeting BM, like Bod says is incredibly humble, kind and thoughtful. |
