Apologies if this has been discussed before....
What do people consider the most emotional or powerful song the band wrote?
Off the top of my head I can think of Mother Love, WWTLF and Lily of the Valley
For me could reach MY top zone:
SAVE ME
WHITE QUEEN
LOVE OF MY LIFE (less powerfull than the other)
WAS IT ALL WORTH IT
These because I feel a shiver when i listen them...touch my "emotional chords"
The Prophet's Song. Eight minutes of epicness about the Apocalypse. And the true end of the days, not the sissy rapture or lightearted things like that, with the Earth being destroyed and men dying.
If that's not powerfull...
...If it ain't powerful enough, there's White Man. 5 minutes about the suffering of the natives by the hands of the immigrants makes for a heavy theme and music The songs i posted earlier will rank under the emotional category, White Man and Prophet's Song are the powerful ones.
My "top 5" of most emotional Queen song (with favourite moments time):
- The Show Must Go On (2:14 - 2:30)
- Mother Love (1:46 - 2:04)
- Days of Our Lives (2:50 - 3:12)
- White Queen (1:34 - 2:00)
- Lily of the Valley (1:07 - 1:30)
and as a "Bonus":
- Somebody To Love (Live At the Bowl DVD 27:20 - 28:00) - absolutely outstanding.
Prophets Song/White Man
and absolutely Who Wants To Live Forever
it's powerful if there ever was one. The futility of it all; the heartache mentioned, the triumph of it. However brief.
totally romantic song (by dictionary definition)
I love the band, Queen. Always have. Had the good fortune to see them perform twice with Freddie. I love most of their albums, particularly those up to and including The Game. However, the ONLY Queen song that makes me choke up is "The Show Must Go On".
add to the list: Too Much Love Will Kill You, Sail Away Sweet Sister, Dear Friends, There Must Be More to Life Than This.
A lot of sad songs in Queen repertoire.
Well, I think emotional and powerful are not necessarily complementary.
In terms of emotional, I'd say:
These Are the Days of Our Lives - I think this is number 1
Who Wants To Live Forever
The Show Must Go On
Mother Love
Too Much Love Will Kill You
Love Of My Life
Save Me
And 'In My Defence' is an incredibly emotional Freddie song. The video for it almost makes me cry.
A lot of Brian songs seem to feature on the emotionally powerful list. Id say they have a bit more depth than some of Freddies which can tend towards being over theatrical, naturally. They aren't necessarily the biggest hits but Brian should be heralded for the emotional content of his songs starting back from White Queen.
The number one song for me is The Show Must Go On, the lyrics that Brian wrote are strong by itself but Freddie sings them with so much passion and power, it is for me the best performance in the whole history of pop music. Period. Yes the sentimental reasons also count but that makes art and music in general. It is so extremely intense. It still chokes me up after 25 years.
Mother Love is also amazing of course, the middle part with the high notes are breathtaking. Again, incredible strong lyrics from Brian.
I also think Under Pressure is very strong and this part chokes me up each time, probably because of private reasons:
"
Insanity laughs under pressure we're breaking
Can't we give ourselves one more chance
Why can't we give love that one more chance
Why can't we give love give love give love give love
Give love give love give love give love give love"
Then Save Me is so beautiful, the way Freddie sings this song live is touching.
Too Much Love Will Kill You, Brian May version, is touching me as well. This is a broken man that sings about his grieve. It is beautiful.
And songs that also have an impact on me:
Who Wants To Live Forever
These Are The Days Of Our Lives
Resurrection
Death On Two Legs
All Dead All Dead
Sail Away Sweet Sister
Music which through its lyrics and delivery is especially emotional:
Liar
White Queen
Nevermore
Flick Of The Wrist
She Makes Me
Death On Two Legs
'39
The Prophet's Song
Bohemian Rhapsody
Love Of My Live (lots of emotional stuff on ANATO)
Long Away
You Take My Breath Away
Somebody To Love
White Man
All Dead, All Dead
Spread Your Wings
It's Late
Save Me
Who Wants To Live Forever
Innuendo
Mother Love
