Great! Thanks for sharing. Awesome video. I cannot believe the size of the crowd. I tend to agree with critics, compared with earlier tours, Magic Tour was somewhat uninspiring at times. Miss the 80s |

The critics were probably an elite clique of u2 loving Irish hacks That's actually a shocking way to report it on the national news. They seriously belittled the performance . Guaranteed they would be right up u2 or springsteen |

The third review is neutral enough not really a music review |

Slane wasn't the most brilliant of the Magic Tour shows, with all the fights and the lack of interest of the band members. Just from a visual perspective, i think it was the best show, all daylight, where the focus are the band members and the sea of people in the audience, timeless. link If it was up to me, i'd picked up that show to be filmed for the above reasons, luckly i was not the one who made the choice and they recorded the musically better Wembley and Budapest. |

Thank you for sharing and thanks, Bob, for the paper snippets. It shows that time has mercy on Queen. With the view from today we see the great shows they played but the eyes who wittnessed the events and the hands that wrote just hours and days after the date about their experience are maybe closer to the truth. After looking the video I would call it to be a puishment to be there within the countless number of people in the rain and in the madness. regards, W. |

The weather was shit, the people were drunk and wet and muddy. Fights broke out and this caused a lot of tension. Queen did their best, they might not have been as brilliant as usual, but the weather and the alcohol acted as major aggravating factors. |

Indeed Costa86. I didn't enjoy the day at all. We were there early and right near the front. With the pushing and shoving and crowding I was lost way further back long before Queen came on. Freddie stopped the show at one point and asked everybody to take a step back. He tapped a 'security guy' on the shoulder and told him 'This is your job'. One paper I think gave a broadly positive review and said that the crowd were over-excited to the point where they were a danger to themselves. Afterwards the long trek back to the buses and the 30 mile drive to Dublin. I seem to have a lot more stamina now to tell you the truth. One light-hearted quote to lighten the mood! As we saw, it started raining during The Bangles set. Suzanna Hoffs said 'We're sorry you're getting wet. We are too and at least you can't get electrocuted!' If any of that is a false memory please let me know! |

I'll add a bit of detail to your link to the programme on unofficial merchandise. The presenter, Dave Fanning, couldn't stand Queen. He was asked to comment on Queen's success on the radio news the night Freddie died. His comments don't bear repeating here. It was ironic that while he didn't like the unofficial merchandisers he was actually defending Queen! (If any of my recollections or interpretations are wrong or unfair please say so). |

The Slane show was a bit of a disappointment alright. The lack of any half decent support bands on the day compared to the shows on the rest of that tour contributed to this. No one had much interest in the support bands all day and by the time Queen came on stage everyone was ready to blow off a lot of steam. I was fairly close to the stage as well that day and could see that Freddie almost had a look of worry on his face as to what could potentially happen with the crowd that day. It actually felt like he was trying to "under-perform" in order to not get the crowd too excited and not cause a riot. I remember Dave Fanning being interviewed when Freddie died and I don't actually think he said anything bad about the band. He did refer to them during the interview as "the biggest band in Ireland at one stage". Maybe you're thinking of BP Fallon who definitely did hate Queen. |

And I suspect entirely responsible for feeding the state broadcaster it's review |

I sent an email to RTE asking if any further footage of Queen At Slane unfortunately it came back that nothing exists other than the current News report. "Hi Jordan Thank you for your email. I have searched our archive database and the only footage that we currently hold of Slane 1986 is News footage. This will be a news report which will feature highlights from Slane but I don't think that is what you are looking for. We do not hold the actual recording of the entire concert. Sorry I cannot be of more assistance to you at this time. Kind Regards Hilary" So that's unfortunate! :( -Chin |

The thing is, it's still the same today. I see poster and t-shirt seller's on the way to the venues. With nowadays technics they are easier and cheaper to produce but most of the pics look shit. Actually the fakes sold in Slane are not looking that bad. Interesting to see that on the official shirts back the following date of Budapest is Nice and not Frejus. Why did they change the venue, actually? regards, W. |
