Here's a little project that I've long wanted to do. Rock Montreal colours always looked off to me, basically take a gorgeous looking film footage and apply an Instagram filter to it, that's how you get Rock Montreal. My goal was to undo it, which requires going through the whole concert scene by scene, because one colour setting won't fit even one song for the most part. A sneak peak behind the edit (quite a bit of cuts, had I known maybe I wouldn't have bothered with this to begin with :P ) - https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/7053/1x3x07oejo1x2bw7g.jpg" border="0" alt="Simple, Free Image and File Hosting at MediaFire" /> There are no colour references (the 2001 We Will Rock You DVD also has its flaws in my opinion) so the whole thing is totally subjective and corrected 'by eye'. So what you will see is what I think looks good. Might not look just as good to you, which is fine. This is an alternative version after all. Check these to get an approximate picture of the differences - http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/176011 http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/176012 http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/176013 http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/176014 http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/176016 http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/176017 (Mouse over the image to reveal the comparison) --- As for the audio, it has 4 streams - 2007 DTS (default), 2001 Center Channel Mix (Semi Acapella isolated) for entertainment purposes and more clearly heard overdubs, BM & RT commentary track (along with all the 2007 subtitles in various languages lifted from the Blu Ray) and Saul Swimmer 2001 commentary track. Special thanks to Nitroboy (known as Simon Christensen on youtube) who synced and compiled the 2001 streams so that they can be added to Rock Montreal. This sure saved a bit of time :-) The video is in 1080p, just like the original and encoded at roughly 18 Mbps via x264 encoder - no quality / compression difference to the original was found when I carefully inspected and compared separate frames. A bit of sharpness was applied, which brought out a little more detail. Filesize - the whole thing is about 11.8 GB. What else? Well, this is a personal project and I'm not supposed to post it here, so those interested may PM me. |

Or you decided to criticize everything Maybe you have a shite monitor. And have you seen the 2001 DVD which has totally different colours? This version is pretty much a compromise between the two. Reason I have watched Rock Montreal in its entirety about 3 times (once in a cinema) throughout the years is because colours distracted me from the performance. This version should fix this for myself and many other people. If you don't like it, stick to the original Blu Ray. |

Chief Mouse 20.06.2016 13:52 |
^ The original and this. It was processed this way in 2007 that the grain moves across the frames which looks pretty bad to be fair. This was done probably in order to remove all the film spots and dirt automatically which involved strong temporal processing. So this issue is apparent in my version as well as I didn't do anything to correct it. |

I just watched this version. It looks great and I have nothing bad to say about it. However, it's strange how much the video is ahead of the sound in some cases. It's not a case of using one nights audio with other nights sound as for example the drum fills are exactly the same, but the the video is clearly ahead of the sound. This is apparent in KYA for example. If it's not some glitch in my equipment it's strange how they can get something like this wrong on an official release. |
Nitroboy 22.06.2016 15:04 |
If you're using VLC, press "J" 3 times to delay the audio by -150ms. That solves it. |
Biggus Dickus 22.06.2016 23:20 |
^^ That worked. Thanks. |

Hasn't anyone noticed this before? Now watching this, and with the little that i saw, even the audio tracks from the 2001 DVD are better synced with the video than the original DTS-HD track. Somebody to Love is a pretty good example of this. A even better example is on Let Me Entertain You, check Roger hiting the snare from 00:06:46 to 00:06:48 and compare the DTS track with the 2001 centre channel track. On DTS you see him hiting the snare but you only hear the snare sound AFTER the camera angle changes. Both examples are on the original blu-ray, on both surround and stereo tracks. The problem is on the original. As i said, the 2001 DVD tracks in this file are better synced. Thanks for the link Chief Mouse, great work. |
pittrek 23.06.2016 01:16 |
Correct, the problem has been always there. I always automatically assumed it was a half arsed job done for the theatrical release, a result of using video and audio from different nights. All of the versions had different f-ups, e.g. the VHS version in Killer Queen you could hear Freddie's voice when the camera has shown he's not singing, the same goes for e.g. WWRY fast in the 2001 DVD, and a lot of instances where they had a few frames long difference between the audio and the video tracks. Still not so horrible as the Rainbow VHS :) And I absolutely agree, great work. I've seen it last evening and this was the first time I was actually able to watch the whole thing from the beginning till the end without needing breaks for my eyes. |
Nitroboy 23.06.2016 01:58 |
My theory is that that they ALWAYS (this is present on all releases) shift the audio by -50 or -100 ms (or thereabout), to make up for the distance that people usually watch it at on their TVs (several meters). We who watch this on our computers are much closer, and as such have speakers or headphones delivering the sound almost instantaneously. Thus we see the audio being out of sync. The reason the 2001 center channel (and the Saul Swimmer commentary track) doesn't have this issue, is because I synchronized it that way :) I notice videos I've worked on are in sync on my computer, but when I watch it on our TV from about 3-4 meters away; it's not. Just my own "observation" :) |
Oscar J 23.06.2016 07:59 |
Speed of sound ˜ 343 m/s. So if people usually watch it from a 3 - 4 meter distance, they'd only need to delay the video about 10 ms after the audio. Also, in this case - wasn't it actually the audio that was delayed? Because that doesn't make sense. |

Just my own "observation" :) As i said in my previous post, in a home environment that doesn't make sense. And what you say makes even less sense because light travels faster than sound, so sound would arrive later than the image as you go farther away from you tv. So in Rock Montreal, as you increase viewing distance, the audio and video out-of-sync problem would be even worst than it already is. Also, 5.1 home systems have speaker placement and distance to listening point configuration. You see the picture, and then you hear the audio. On Let Me Entertain You, Roger hits the snare from 00:06:46 to 00:06:48. You see him hiting the snare, but you only hear the sound of the snare after the camera angle changes to a side stage camera. If it was like you describe, it should be the other way round. This out-of-sync thing in Rock Montreal is an error and not a conscious decision. It can't be a conscious decision because the way light and sound travel. That's why, in big stadium concerts, you need PA system across the venue because sound in front of the stage would arrive later than the image in the back of the stadium. |
Nitroboy 23.06.2016 15:01 |
You are correct. I was mixing it up with my video bootlegs where the sound is delayed because of the length of the venues :P To fix it permanently, you guys can extract the DTS audio track and put it back into the MKV file with a negative delay of ~100ms :) |
advanced159 23.06.2016 16:42 |
To be honest I didn't notice any delays playing the concert at normal speed....I had to play the Let me entertain you part at 0.50x to see what you guys were talking about |
Oscar J 23.06.2016 18:20 |
Can somebody point to that bit in Let Me Entertain You in a Youtube vid? I can't see the delay issue everyone's talking about. |

1 minute and 35 seconds mark |
Nitroboy 24.06.2016 05:08 |
You can see it better at 1:55. Look at Roger's drumming, where you hear the snare when he pulls his hand AWAY from the snare drum. |
Oscar J 24.06.2016 11:15 |
I have no delay issues, he hits the snare at pretty much exactly the same time as the audio. Even at 0.25x speed. Wonder if it has something to do with Flash Player, sound card, CPU, etc? |
Chief Mouse 24.06.2016 11:26 |
Hmm, well I didn't really think of looking into the audio aspect of this, because the DTS was muxed in directly from the BR trusting it would have been good enough. I didn't have audio in the timeline because it would have likely slowed down my PC even more so didn't really spot any sync issues. |
popy 24.06.2016 12:20 |
Try to "air-drum" on various parts of the concert where it's possible to see Roger hiting things. It will be even more noticable. |
pittrek 24.06.2016 13:13 |
Oscar J wrote: I have no delay issues, he hits the snare at pretty much exactly the same time as the audio. Even at 0.25x speed. Wonder if it has something to do with Flash Player, sound card, CPU, etc?See? Because of people like you they don't bother to sync it properly :-) Honestly, the delay IS there and it's not constant, for example in this particular video Freddie is synchronised often correctly, but Roger is often not. But I do understand that not everybody notices stuff like that. Most of people won't. |
Chief Mouse 24.06.2016 13:27 |
Well, the video would need to be cut up and adjusted to fit the audio but they're using the original cut and they have no rushes right? Would anyone really want to chop up and adjust the audio? I think there is no fix apart from just trying not to notice it. If I missed something or I'm wrong, correct me please. |
pittrek 24.06.2016 14:27 |
I agree, ignoring it is probably the best solution. I am pretty sure 90% of people won't notice it. |
advanced159 24.06.2016 14:54 |
Since I was going to (de)mux the mkv to add the subtitle track with the lyrics like the 2002 dvd, I added the -100ms delay that nitroboy suggested and it goes really well. I checked with Love of my life, get down make love, bohemian rhapsody and another one bites the dust and the snare hits are in sync and still can't find any parts where Freddie is unsynchronized. |
popy 24.06.2016 15:04 |
Oscar J wrote: I have no delay issues, he hits the snare at pretty much exactly the same time as the audio. Even at 0.25x speed. Wonder if it has something to do with Flash Player, sound card, CPU, etc? Flash player? You asked for a youtube video so you could see what i'm talking about. We're talking Blu-Ray. The problem is there in the original. The begining of Keep Yourself Alive is another good example. Try air-druming in Keep Yourself Alive intro and keep looking at Roger. You'll go out of sync. It's a problem in the original Blu-Ray, not the flash player, CPU, etc. |
Oscar J 24.06.2016 15:47 |
It is much more noticeable in this. It is also noticeable 1:35 into the LMEY video, but at 1:55 the audio isn't out of sync anymore as far as I can tell. Like pittrek said, it probably comes and goes. Was considering hardware/software reasons since we were discussing delays at specific timestamps in a youtube video, and Nitroboy was hearing a delay in a spot I definitely didn't. But I'm sure the delay issues are there in the original Blu-Ray as well. But yeah, I'm definitely among the 90 % who don't care. The music is what it's all about for me. :) |

popy 25.06.2016 10:44 |
The Blu-Ray is a audiovisual medium so when i buy a movie, tv series or a concert, the one thing that i would expect is the audio being in sync with the video. If i didn't care about it, i would just listen to the CD of the concert, or rip the audio from the Blu-Ray. But don't expect anyone buying a Blu-Ray to watch and hear a concert and NOT be bothered when video and audio are out of sync all the time. |
