Just listened to the song and rediscovered it big time. I felt an instant urge to start a discussion about this fantastic gem in the Queen catalogue. This song really has it all. I love the the way it starts off. The high pitched vocals sounds like some sort of journey. I dont know, but it feels a bit like something coming to an end. (Probably because I know the course of events) The atmosphere is a bit nostalgic and sad. The riff is great, and Freddies vocals on top of it is so powerful. The lyrics appears to be very selfbiographic and a review of life. I like it a lot.
There are two segments with "orchestra". Maybe inspiration from Freddies adventure with Monsterrat? I love the arrangement and the way this song is assembled. It all leads up to that last chorus "Was it all worth it, was it all worth it. It was a worthwhile experience." It is a great climax.
Everybody on this forum is well familiar with this song. But I'd like to hear your opinions on this song. Do you have any stories about it? Have you ever heard it on radio or other places? Its one of those great Queen songs you never tend to hear except when you put it on yourself.
The band stated that it was meant as a sort of autobiographical piece, I think John said it during the 1989 Queen For An Hour Radio 1 interview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Mdb6Hz8YY0
I love the song. And yes, I have heard it a few times on my local rock radio. Good stuff.

And that is my favourite interview ever. It is so great to hear them all 4 in great spirit. Lovely!
The intro and riff is great, as is the solo and orchestral break. I think the verses and choruses are a little unimaginative musically, but Freddie saves it with his vocals.
Oscar, after reading your post, I gave Was It All Worth It is a second spin, but I still share the opinion with Mooghead. From day one I for one find the synth and the drums dull. The orchestra part just kills the song a bit.

First of all: Was It All Worth It is I think a great song with a great riff, although I personally would have put the synths more in the background (the ones that are not in the bridge)
And about the drumsound, I agree with Oscar, then again: it's all a matter of taste.
I personally like acoustic drumsound like in WIAWI and Khashoggi's ship (to stick with The Miracle)
Although I Want It All uses acoustic drums as well, I don't like the sound of them, they sound way too dry and thin.
The fill at 5:12 into the song sure as hell isn't dull IMO.
But each to their own. :)
Edit: agree with post above. The drums on IWIA are triggered. What were they thinking?
To be honest, the fill at 5:12 is really simple and standard.
Personally I like the ones at 1:08, 2:29, 3:39 (especially this one, a nice roll into the guitarsolo) and 5:17.
5:12 - are you talking about the 32:nds across the snare and floor tom? While I'm not really a drummer, that's the one fill in that song that I definitely can not play.

The one at 5:12 is a 8th notes fill and really simply, the one at 5:17 is the one I like, but can't play that one either (I think, it's a bit hard to hear what he is exactly playing there.
I've never cared for this song, and I'm not really sure exactly why.
I've given it so many chances because I know it has a lot of die-hard fans... dunno... I just can't get into it. Wish I could.
