In the latest FC Mag, Brian says they are working on the BBC recordings. So looks like finally we will get the complete BBC Sessions. The Queen back-room boys have been working hard in another rescue and re-mastering project - the very early recordings we did at the BBC, and our working title is Queen On Air. Some very interesting stuff! My God, we had a lot of energy in those days!'' |
||
mooghead 02.04.2016 13:45 |
This would imply QP have actually SPENT money to acquire the recordings. I dont think so... ;-)
cmsdrums 02.04.2016 14:01 |
Brian's article says they are working on "the very early recordings" they did at the BBC; whether he is talking loosely and this will actually include up to the NOTW sessions rather than just the first and second album tracks, time will tell.

"Brian says" blah blah blah. He says a lot but does little. Another 70's concert is what we need now. A package of the BBC recordings will be perfectly fine by me only if it comes as an addition to some bigger releases this year.

So... Brian is now working on a release which was already advertised over 20 years ago. Does that mean it will be released in another 20 years? Or does it mean that the normal timeline is in reverse, and Brian will only start the recording in another 20 years? :/ |

Freddie rey 04.04.2016 06:39 |
I think that the other product will be something about freddie's solo career. 25th anniversary of his death and 70th birthday...

Togg 04.04.2016 06:52 |
It is amazing given that QP do keep tabs on what fans say, that they still hold back from releasing a 70's gig that would sell in large amounts (compared to a BBC session recording) I dont understand what they are thinking? sure it will be slightly interesting to hear old BBC recordings, but what wrong with releasing a NOTW era gig or Hyde Park?

I'd be happy with the complete BBC studio sessions (including MOTBQ - I did detect minor variations but been a while since I listened) plus tracks from Golders Green not featured on other sessions so to avoid too many duplicates of tracks rather than the entire gig. Unless the studio sessions were on CD, but, say, the GG gig was complete but on vinyl. Something like that rather than all crammed over several CDs. I'm just thinking aloud. |
||

||
Oscar J 11.08.2016 16:08 |
But many of those sessions have tracks that are almost exactly identical to the album versions. Why would they bother make 6 CD's and including those?
soxtalon 11.08.2016 16:25 |
Not many. March of the Black Queen is the only one identical. The rest have some resounding differences - some more than others. If they are going to do an On Air released based on BBC recordings than similarities or not it should be as complete as possible - every session, every recording - I'd even want them to include Black Queen. I'd want to see a more firm source about 6 CDs to believe it. Sorry Walter....I mean I hope you're right. I was realistically hoping for a 3 CD, the 6 sessions and Golders Green Show. 3 EXTRA CDs worth of stuff would be awesome - hopefully not *ALL* Interviews. I expect at *LEAST* one cd to be full of interviews though - radio appearances, etc. Either way, I think this is a release I'll highly enjoy. |
||
Doga 11.08.2016 18:24 |
I want the 6 cd theory confirmed too. Just a crazy thought, if is called "On Air" and not "Live at BBC" technically couldn't be the last two discs Argentina 81 or Mannheim 86? Let's just say that the one disc of "rare and unreleased stuff" in the 6 CD edition could be hit or miss for some people.My bet is that since it is On Air - It would be a highlights reel of the "unreleased" gigs that were performed on FM broadcasts.....Stuff that most of us probably have in somewhat decent quality And most of us could probably figure out what those are. If that is the case than it still would be a decent release. Official BBC (anything remixed? I thought the See What A Fool remix on the 2011 reissues was golden), Golders Green (again cleaned up and hopefully with fuller Freddie vocals), and some officially released and again hopefully cleaned up usual suspects of the FM Broadcast) and it's a product worth buying which is all you can ask for. I'd highly hesitate on getting amped up for the "unreleased" stuff as it has to fit the concept of the On Air. And if it was On Air, chances are we've heard it in some form at some point. |

on air could mean the final distribution of their actual VIDEOGRAPHY in DTS5.1, 7.1 etc. Some performance bits with PR and AL. I'd be extremely happy with that (*if the price wasn't absurdly high) would be nice if the videos were kept to original aspect ratios as well. Something easily done on BR |

Updates from Greg Brooks @ Dutch Queen Convention: -Queen on air with all BBC Sessions will be released as a double Cd. There will be a box set as well, including other onair content such as live concerts that were broadcasted -Queen Greatest Hits 1&2 getting it's re-release on vinyl. GH 1 will have a different artwork and tracklist, it will be a double Lp -the Brian May Box Set is work in progress! -A big Queen Exhibition on a really large scale is planned, inspired by the David Bowie one and other great ones. The Queen one will be bigger than the Bowie one. -A Live killers Box Set is work in progress, in-between other projects -Working on Hyde Park/Earls Court, not yet sure if it is going to be the whole concerts as a solo release, or a compilation, cause of lack of quality... -There will be a huge 3D book with pictures taken by Brian May over the years - A massive book is to come with live pictures, maybe split in 2 books (70ies, 80ies) -The safest news: It is very unlikely that there will be a anthology boxset with Outtakes and things, as Queen already rejected to include this things in the bonus Cd content of the Remastered series. It is their music and they got to decide... Thanks to Hardy Zanelli on the info ! |

^ I think there's some miscommunication that might lead to unhappiness here. I think the "box set" being mentioned is more the 6 CD version already being bandied about. 2 BBC Discs, 1 Golders Green disc, 2 definite discs with interviews and then one last disc that either has more interviews or possibly highlights of other concerts that were played on the air.... Not a full box set with everything they've ever done on the air.... |

Not impressed with this at all, the box set has been butchered beyond belief. I'm glad I don't have to pay for this crap. Queen On Air The Complete BBC Radio Sessions Tune in to… Queen On Air The Complete BBC Radio Sessions Available as 2-CD set and 3-LP set / Collector’s Edition 6-CD set with added live concert broadcasts and radio interviews Released globally November 4 on Virgin EMI. Hollywood Records for North America. “I heard it on my radio” Pre-Order Queen On Air Now @ link Queen’s meteoric ascendancy during the 1970s has been well documented. From their gloriously ambitious self-titled debut album of 1973 through to the album that put them in the superstar bracket, 1975’s A Night At The Opera, and beyond, this unique group carved out a singular path as the most visionary, inventive and charismatic band of that epic decade. But there is another side to Queen’s rise that has been largely overlooked. Between February 1973 and October 1977, the band recorded six radio sessions exclusively for the BBC. The twenty four recordings these landmark sessions produced include alternate versions of the debut single, unique takes of classic album tracks and even a radically reworked reimagining of one of their best known anthems that has never previously appeared on any Queen studio release. Now, for the very first time, all six Queen BBC sessions - meticulously restored by Queen engineer Kris Fredriksson and mastered by Grammy Award winner Adam Ayan - have been brought together on Queen On Air, released on November 4 by Virgin EMI. North America through Hollywood Records. Available as a 2-CD set and a 3-LP vinyl edition, plus a Deluxe 6-disc edition featuring a CD of live broadcasts and 3 CDs of radio interviews, Queen On Air is an essential addition for connoisseurs of the band. Queen On Air is more than just a collection of rare recordings – it is a glorious snapshot of the growth of a legend. Spanning 220 minutes, the seventeen interviews represent significant landmarks in the Queen story. Talking with some of Britain’s best known broadcasters and presenters, the band reflect on various moments in their musical history, influences and aspirations, and provide some memorable quotes, such as Roger Taylor’s now famous description of Queen’s 1984 Works tour as having “more lights and spectacle than the Vatican”. The Deluxe Edition of Queen On Air also comes with a meticulously assembled booklet containing rare photographs and sleeve notes lovingly compiled by band archivist Greg Brooks, featuring memories from the band and BBC producers Jeff Griffin and Bernie Andrews, plus comments from legendary Radio 1 DJs John Peel and Bob Harris from the time of the original broadcasts. Amongst them, Bernie Andrews, BBC Radio 1 producer of Queen’s first and third sessions recalls his first introduction to Queen: Thanks to their studio albums and their monumental live shows, Queen’s status as bona fide rock legends has long been assured. With Queen On Air, the world finally gets to hear and discover this fascinating side of their legacy. The joke is a "full" concert spread over 3 tours - that's why God Save The Queen is included as the last item, like in a real concert.
pittrek 29.09.2016 08:01 |
I) Incorrect song order II) We Will Rock You split into 2 songs - WTF? Will they cut out the Siddharta part too? III) Bits of 3 different concerts from completely different musical eras joined into one? Are you fucking kidding me? IV) You could not give us even a complete Golders Green Hippodrome concert? V) Short bits of interviews? Why? Who gives a fuck about tiny bits of interviews? Almost every of those interviews was an hour long, the Christmas interview was TWO HOURS LONG, so if you cut out all music it's still at least 30-40 minutes of speech for every interview (at least the interviews which were an hour long) VI) The box art / cover art is the worst I have seen in the last 20 years. You know how there are various lists of worst album covers of all times? Well every one of them is a complete masterpiece compared to this. VII) Where are the rumoured DVDs? ANOTHER hugely missed opportunity to release the bloody TOTP performances! And not to mention the Bob Harris 1977 footage. |
||
Sunshine 29.09.2016 08:03 |
This is indeed really disappointing. "God Save The Queen" as a live track, seriously? And why cut out all concerts? It should have been the other way around by releasing the concerts fully and less space for interviews in case a concession needed to be done. In fact they just release it properly. Do it 100% or go home. |

Hutchence 29.09.2016 08:16 |
I am very very disappointed with what they did with the "live section" of this release. They have literally butchered three great concerts. Golders Green Hippodrome was probably one of the shortest Queen concert ever and even that wasn't released in its entirety !!! Morumbi + Mannheim glued together, I would like to know- who's idea was it and, most importantly, what idiot has approved that. Horrible, I'm appalled. Same goes for the interviews- either release them in full length or not at all. The only good thing about this release is the fact that we finally have all BBC sessions officially released in one place. |
||
cmi 29.09.2016 08:18 |
Thank God they didn't condense all 6 sessions into highlights 1 CD.... 2 CD digipak is the go-to version here. 6 CD set is another crap from QPL which must be avoided. It seems to me we'll never receive any clever high quality release from this bunch of stingy people... |
||
rhapsody8 29.09.2016 08:23 |
Another crappy "cut and paste" production from Queen Prod. Says lots of things but gives very little. It should be policy of company. Is it so difficult to release three of live broadcasts as full and one disc for interviews? Who needs three discs interviews? You are kidding with fans, I think... |

If Queen would release a 4 CD version (COMPLETE 6 sessions, COMPLETE Golders Green Hippodrome, COMPLETE Hammersmith Odeon 75 and Live Aid for example) + 1 DVD (all Top of the Pops performances), and released for example complete interviews on their website for those of use who buy it, and added a nice book with some nice photos I am pretty sure everybody (or at least most of us) would be happy |

Rainbow, Hammersmith, Montreal, The Bowl, Budapest, Wembley. You call that loads of full concerts for a 20 years band with 15 albums (12 until their last tour), that's been dead for another 25 years. With Freddie alive they only released Wembley - not taking account of unofficial releases, or overdubs monsters like Live Killers or Magic which aren't full concerts - in the first 20 years. Then, QPL released The Bowl, Montreal, Budapest, Rainbow and Hammersmith. Five live albums in 25 years. |

Interestingly, Greg Brooks' write up for the Record Collector article - link - says of MOTBQ: "March Of The Black Queen", as you might expect, is the other showpiece track from this session. Penned by Freddie, the version found on the album encompasses everything within the extensive Queen repertoire, and then some. Although Freddie deviates little from the familiar lyrics, he offers the odd ad-lib by way of extra interest. In essence, this recording of "Black Queen" sounds more like a remix of the original version, rather than a new session take". This clearly states that whilst it sound very similar to the original album version, it is remixed and DOES feature different parts. All the comments I've read here state that is was actually the SAME mix with no deviation and so that is why it has been left off 'On Air', so which is it? a) Greg's RC write up is a load of old whatsits again and it's the same version, and so rightfully should be left off 'On Air' or b) It does have different parts and is remixed, and so should be included on 'On Air'. Incidentally, I notice that the article also refers to Roger being "dogged" with throat problems throughout the 70s and 80s, which is the first time I've seen this - was it a real issue? He always seemed pretty much 'on it' vocally live (and on record)? |
||
dysan 03.10.2016 05:55 |
I think I've accepted that the 2 disc version is the actual Queen On Air release, and the 'deluxe edition' is just loaded with all these - slightly random - extras. Looking at it like that I'm fine with it. Yes, it's frustrating that we're not getting the full gigs (and a really really odd edit of each one it must be said) and the interviews are not content we should be paying for. Yes, they'll be interesting, but a band deciding that them talking is more important than more music is a bit odd. For the gigs, as they couldn't protools them to fuck, do you think RT and BM sat and listened The Voice style to each one and then buzzed when a bum note or something less then satisfactory happened which meant those tracks were black listed? I think so. Also I imagine Greg Brooks was mistaken with his take on TMOTBQ - either misremembering or getting the track name wrong. |

Which is why Greg MIGHT be the right man to literally archive the stuff, work on filing it, restoring it and cataloguing, it, but I truly believe those with a musical background and the ability from a technical point of view to listen to the stuff and tell the difference between one take an another due to a different phrasing, alternate 'feel', a stray cymbal etc.... are FAR better suited to be doing that aspect of the job. From what I have seen over the last 20 years, my opinion is that he simply isn't equipped with the musical knowledge to do that.

OK Kurgan, do you have any of these SQ and Matrix H recordings? I can get the SQ decoded to quad (DVD-A/V hybrid disc), and work is being done on decoding Matrix H but it's a difficult matrix (which is one of the reasons it was a complete failure commercially).

I have posted on other threads the following info. This link provides program and quad broadcast info (DQR) for Golders Green Hippodrome and BBC session 6. These broadcasts were on March 2nd 1975 and December 3rd 1978. http://www.eclipse67.com/kbi.htm In 2006, the King Biscuit tape archives were acquired by Wolfgang's Vault. I have no idea what quad reels quad reels might have been included, despite my repeated requests. They began streaming concerts online and made some available for download, ie. link |

Growing up I really respected Tommy Vance as one of the only 'proper' rock DJs in the UK. I lost a lot of that respect when he presented the BBC radio coverage of the Freddie Tribute in 1992 and after playing 'The Miracle', he then referred to the tracks as 'America'. Ever seen the Peter Kay sketch on misheard lyrics? Well that's the worst example I've ever heard...from a professional who clearly couldn't be arsed to do his homework, on a day meant to honour the bloke who wrote the damn track!! |

Wow ! If that's genuine, then it's an absolutely fascinating insight into early Queen history. It has generally been told that Freddie changed his last name to Mercury around 1970-71. This not only puts that theory to rest, but it narrows it down to a window of a mere few months. |

You can now work out exactly where it should start and it seems we have the 2nd take guitar intro re-instated. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01M22LWC6/ref=dm_ws_tlw_trk9 The combined lengths of WWRY slow (1:35) and fast (2:46) comes out at 4:21, which makes it complete. |

My Fairy King from Queen On Air is up on the official Queen You Tube channel. To my ears it sounds a bit cleaner (ending of the phrases, backing vocals, instrumental track) than the Queen at the Beeb release. What's more I don't know how to describe it... but it doesn't have the "new, fresh" feel to it that See What A Fool I've Been has on the NOTW deluxe edition. Hear it for yourself: link |

He also said there was "some interesting stuff" on the interviews. He was also quite pleased with the music on there. He didn't sound disconnected, he sounded quite upbeat I thought. I suggest to anyone who hasn't heard the interview, give the podcast a listen and make up your own mind (Steve Wrights Big Guests available from the BBC). cmsdrums 03.11.2016 16:37 |
The chatter is just very short comments by Peel and Harris after a few of the tracks. Also some DJ voice overs on Golders Green. Golders Green bass guitar and drums sound great (same plug in as Rainbow?), but the guitar is a bit fuzzy on one channel and the lead vocal is still distant. Brazil live stuff sounds they may not have the multis but they have done some work to clean up a stereo mix - which gives hope for Hammersmith 79 if that's all they have but are happy to release it. Mannheim sounds like a full remix - sounds really nice and full; a lovely 'live' feel but with everything really audible. Would love this or Knebworth in full now! (And Wembley with this guitar sound which is well up in the mix but really 'fat'). Can I just ask for clarification on 'It's Late' - did they not actually play the 'I've been so long...' Middle 8 part with the guitar solo after, as it's not in here....I lost my bootleg copy years ago and have never replaced it - cheers |

I DID notice some slight speed / pitch differences between a couple of tracks vs. my versions downloaded from here. Haven't yet compared with album versions to check pitch. How silly of me to assume that surely whatever QPL put on this new set would be speed/pitch correct. Hopefully they are... Also, all of my versions from BBC Session 1 have the stereo channels reversed in comparison with the On Air versions. Anyone know which is truly right? Another thing about Doing All Right, which is also on the 1989/95 releases but I just never noticed - the acoustic guitar continues at the end until 4:00. Lovely touch. And the vocals are completely different there. A bit more timid and less polished than the album version, but still pretty damn gorgeous. |

Listening to Golders Green now. It’s squeaky clean, and Deacon and, in particular, Taylor are very loud in the mix. Freddie is still a bit buried unfortunately Interesting though how a mix from 1973 can (instrumentally) still sound better than what they managed with Hammy 75 in 2015. There’s a nice and punchy tape compression and all the instruments, every tom on Taylors kit is clear as a day, and his snare never sounded better - being tuned higher than usual with a lovely crack to it. This show just highlights the band - it's one of few shows that aren't mainly about Freddie when listening back to it. |

Another little difference: In session 2, Son And Daughter @ 0:48 to 0:50, they've removed Brian's little guitar feedback. Once again, the perfectionism is pretty over the top. But at least they didn't autotune Mercury's vocals like Hammersmith... |

About Live CD: It's the most shameful part of the set.... Golders Green Hippodrome concert sounds so clean and enjoyable, but they cut almost 3 songs from it.... :(( Especially it's a pity about See What A Fool I've Been as it's distorted on the bootleg source. I've noticed that 'Radio One' line in the introduction is not edited out, also snippet before 'Son And Daughter' with small remark by probably Freddie is also in place as in the acetate. Jailhouse Rock is one minute long and fades out but 'Bama Lama' still mentioned by presentor before medley. It seems to me it's a slightly different mix as waveform doesn't match the QDA and acetate sources especially on S&D guitar solo. Possibly stereo pan was slightly narrowed. Morumbi Stadium '81 recording is probably an off-air MONO recording with DJ talk in places. Sounds better than any known source. It'll be great to have the whole broadcast of this show... but not with QPL.... :( Mannheim '86 is probably a pre-FM recording, sounds excellent and cleaner than known sources. There's a cut near 16 kHz, so it was taken not directly from analogue source. GGH '73 source is the most enjoyable quality recording of all 3 shows pesented here. It's really a crime to truncate this show to feature more tracks from other two... I'm not talking that this show is the only one related to BBC and must be in the main part of the set as 'In Concert' program feature. About DJ talk: All songs except last 2 feature small speeches before or after them. These speeches slightly overlap songs on fade out. So if you need clean versions, you need 2 CD version as well. |
||
calculon559 06.11.2016 02:47 |
They definitely made the right call leaving the DJ talk for the 6-disc version, though if they were going to do that, why not put the songs back in broadcast order? I would have thought it would make things easier. Then again, it could have been a lot worse. They could have released the BBC session like the 2011 remasters; a one CD version (Best of BBC?) with no double ups, and a 2 CD version with a 'bonus ep' containing the missing tracks. |
||

Did a quick comparison of Session 5 between On Air and the russian boot In The Mirror. Looks like only SOME of the DJ talk is on the official release Basically, chatter after a song is intact, but chatter preceding a song has been excised. Example: "Well, that's the best thing I've heard in a long time, Queen, and 'Stone Cold Crazy' [and with a Flick of the Wrist, here's Queen]" |

Easy to fix and make your own copies, but at least we have chatter on the other sessions that we've never heard before. It would have been nice to have had it all though. Incidentally. As far as I'm aware, all the DJ chatter has come from Brian's own off-air recordings of the broadcasts. Apparantly he used to get his Mum to record all the radio things they did. THIS is the sort of information should have been in the accompanying book as it's fascinating to hear. |

So here's my overall two cents: I'm happy with this release, but not ecstatic. There's a lot that they got right, and a lot that they could've done so much better. Let's start with the good: The BBC sessions are now out in their entirety, full stop. Every note, exactly as it was played. No overdubbing, no fixes (except for two very small adjustments in sessions 1 and 2 as mentioned earlier in this thread), and no loudness war. The BBC tracks on the 2011 remasters were partly brickwalled, but in 2016 they breathe as they should. There is little new here for those of us who have keenly collected every morsel of unreleased Queen music they can find (the intro to Ogre Battle is now happily reunited with the rest of the track in excellent quality, and sessions 2 and 4 particularly sound much better than what we'd heard), but for the wider audience this is a significant chapter in the Queen story out there for the taking now. Well done, QP. The 6 disc version has DJ commentary (sometimes abridged) after most of the tracks, which is a delightful addition if we're looking for a period piece here. And for those who don't dig the idea, the 2 disc and LP versions have just the music. Everybody wins. Many of the interviews are unheard, and are well worth a gander. But a couple of the ones that have circulated for years present some issues. They used the standard copy for the Kenny Everett one and did some god-awful hiss reduction on it. What kind of professional was actually satisfied with these results? All I hear in the musical segments is digital artifacts, and an overall digital swirl in the tape hiss. It was better as it was. And they significantly cut the 1977 interview by over 20 minutes, despite having released the whole thing with their 40th anniversary book (well, they released only half of it at first, but that's a whole other story). The 1989 interview is missing over ten minutes as well. It only makes one wonder how much of the unheard material is abridged. The Golders Green Hippodrome 73 radio broadcast has been available in complete form for over a decade (and bootlegged in part since the 70s), and the official release does not provide an increase in sound quality (although the spoken introduction by Alan Black is slightly longer). See What A Fool I've Been is cut due to sound quality (fair enough), but Jailhouse Rock is under a minute long before it fades out, making one wonder why it was even included at all. And then we have incomplete versions of Sao Paulo 81 and Mannheim 86. The latter is forgettable, as a recording of equal quality has been out on bootleg since 1986. The live disc is under 74 minutes long, so even with their butchering philosophy there was room for one or two more Sao Paulo tracks. But for the entire Sao Paulo show not to be included is a travesty, as it is better sound quality than any previous FM or bootleg copy we've heard. However, this does highlight a spot of encouragement - they are now willing to release uncut mono recordings when they were previously all about multi-tracks. It remains bizarre that QP has not jumped onto the digital medium of selling unheard concerts for download. If money is what they're after, then they should dip into Brian's catalogue of mono and stereo soundboard tapes and release them for £10 apiece. Thousands of people would buy every single one that upgraded what was on the bootleg market. The "top 100 bootlegs" project was rancid, where they sold audience recordings that ran at the wrong speed and inferior copies of shows they officially released. A version 2.0, where they actually listened to experts who know what the fanbase wants, could usher in an era of not only dialogue but utmost satisfaction for all parties. And in the digital realm this is remarkably easy to achieve. The failures of the On Air release would be instantly forgiven. The effort would be minimal - bake the tapes, transfer them to digital, and put them up for download. They will sell. Until then - On Air is a reminder that QP have the capacity to get it right, but often fall short of the mark. Had they left it as a 2 disc release, it would be a 10/10. But choosing to do an expanded version with so many flaws and omissions drops it to a 7/10. Now bring on the 76-79 live stuff ! |

Viper wrote: The booklet states that Black Queen was played with the other 3 tracks.Well, hang on. Let's get this correct instead of posting half the story and pissing the fans off who haven't seen the booklet yet. CMS quite correctly makes the supposition: The book reads "TMOTBQ was widely thought to be part of the material recorded for this session, but it seems that the band may have run out of time to record a fourth song. This is probably the reason why the standard album cut of of Black Queen, a song not easily recreated live in its entirety, was played out during the same broadcast as the 3 session tracks." I think that pretty much covers the issue. They provided 3 new sessions (as confirmed by the DJ), and to make up time because 4 tracks was maybe the normal requirement for BBC Sessions, an album track was played last. |

Why do we only get mono when there was supposedly a stereo broadcast of São Paulo on Jovem Pan 2 FM? Also, if the 6CD version is from the same masters as the 2CD, how can the DJ chatter overlap the fade out? |

Gotta admit, what they lack in the Live disc, they make up for it in the sound quality. At least compared to the sources I have now (in the case of Golders Green and Mannheim). The 6 sessions didn't sound bad at all, The sound seemed to open up more compared to the BBC tracks from the 2011 Deluxe Editions. The interviews were okay. An interesting listen, much like the David Wigg interviews. I hope I'm correct in this, but I think QPL's testing the waters for releasing soundboards of their concerts. I mean other bands have done this, Grateful Dead's a textbook example. I hope these three concerts would be a preview of things to come. |

I think since the box has come out, Greg Brooks has answered a complainant that was unhappy with only parts of the gigs being included, by stating that these are the only bits that QPL have to be workable and so its better than nothing. This is the sort of info that should be openly put out there upfront really and it really would save them a lot of flack. A real issue the band and their 'people' have is poorly managing their customers' expectations up front. |

I always thought that the Deep Cuts version of MoTBQ was played as an BBC session. Or am I wrong? Was MoTBQ only re-mixed for the Deep Cuts album then? Tom |

I'm perfectly happy with the bootleg version which is far more complete than what QPL have offered us. Apart from the BBC Sessions themselves, the rest of the release is just a load of butchered highlights from concerts and radio interviews. |

We also have to clarify some things here. There are two following questions which should be answered: 1) With Queen On Air, was the purpose of this release presenting to us what was heard and in what quality on the day of the original broadcast? 2) Did Queen Archivist or someone from the Queen Productions went to local radio archives (BBC, Argentinian and German Radio) and looked for the best possible sources ? Or if the answer to the question 1) is "yes", Queen Productions has in their archives a better sources but presented us the quality in which the material on the release was presented on the original day of the broadcast ? |

Probably queen has access to the orginal mastertapes and made a perfect scan of it with the best modern technology. The OLd copy of the master from the bbc tapes isn't used I think. QP has to work with the BBC as there are clear logo 's of them on all the packaging formats, and pay a decent amount of money or a percentage of the earnings. Depends on the deal they made. |

The Real Wizard wrote: So here's my overall two cents: I'm happy with this release, but not ecstatic. There is little new here for those of us who have keenly collected every morsel of unreleased Queen music they can find (the intro to Ogre Battle is now happily reunited with the rest of the track in excellent quality, and sessions 2 and 4 particularly sound much better that what we'd heard), but for the wider audience this is a significant chapter in the Queen story out there for the taking now. Now bring on the 76-79 live stuff !Great review Bob, thanks! As a side comment, I really liked the "A version 2.0, where they actually listened to experts who know what the fanbase wants," Hint, hint ;) Cheers, Ogre- |

Is it possible that they have pre-FM source, copy of the masters from the respective radio stations ? As for the Golder's Green... Was it recorded that way on that particular day in 1973, that even with access to the BBC master, you can't do anything with Freddie's voice being so low in the mix ? |

Barely ever post around here anymore, but... Happened to notice today that there's a slight difference in Fred's vocals in SWAFIB when compared to the 2011 version on Queen II. It concerns the start of the first verse, about 32s in after the intro, on the line 'I caught a train'... Queen II: he sings "I caught a train" with a nice steady tail off on 'train'. Queen On Air: the 'I' from 'I caught' seemingly doesn't actually exist, and at the end of 'train' Fred goes up! I actually really loved the brightness on the 2011 version, especially the drums which sounded fantastic. But it's interesting to know that they seemingly made a couple of fixes to it. I'm keen to listen to more carefully to the rest of SWAFIB and the other 2011 tracks to see what other little nuances and differences the (seemingly "more authentic") On Air versions have for us! |
