Very self-explanatory title :) During the last six months I have seen at least three different commercials in the US that use Queen's music, the latest being Diet Coke that uses a nice cover of I Want it All.Can any artist top that? I only visit the US and live elsewhere, which makes this even more surprising, since I don't even watch much TV when travelling. Historically, I would say that Queen music is used all around the world considerably more than any other artist's. Do you agree or do I just notice and register Queen songs much more easily? Coke even used I Want to Break Free for their ad a couple of years back, a song that is virtually unknown in the US. |

It seems like they don't ever turn down a request to use a song in a commercial. As long as they get the money i guess. I wonder what criteria Freddie used for people using his songs in commercials. |
cmsdrums 02.04.2016 04:14 |
In the uk they are also extensively used in ads - off the top of my head (and there's probably more), Bo Rhap, Don't Stop Me Now, A Kind of Magic, I Want It All have very recently been used extensively in tv ad campaigns. |
Martin Packer 02.04.2016 04:27 |
Used but butchered. In at least one recent case the words didn't fit so they just took them out. In another (Dacia) what was done was resinging by the cast. |
Chief Mouse 02.04.2016 04:39 |
I've seen the Dacia one. "Another one drives a Duster" |

In Italy there's one currently circulating. The Rio 2016 Olympics ad features Bohemian Rhapsody in background. |

It's a beautiful day was used here for a commercial with a young baby seal being released. Nice one. |
andres_clip 02.04.2016 10:00 |
There's alot of Queen commercials both on radio and TV. I guess Freddie is not amused. |

In Sweden btw |
Saif 02.04.2016 10:17 |
Why wouldn't he be amused? He self-admittedly measured success by the money he made and called himself a musical prostitute. As long as he (or his estate) would be getting money, it seems that he would have approved. |
andres_clip 02.04.2016 13:55 |
Ok Mr Know it all. Why weren't Queen a fucking commercial band when Freddie lived? Never make me boring he so famously said to Jim the Hobbit , and commercial is fucking boring wouldn't you say. |

I would think Freddie would be happy his music is being heard by so many people - and making money. The more the music is out there, the more people are exposed to it and then some of them will go and seek out the originals. I hear their music all the time. I was at the movies a couple of weeks ago and they used Queen music in three of the adverts before the film - I Want It All in the Diet Coke commercial (and I think there might be another Coke commercial now using another tune)...Don't Stop Me Now used in the trailer for the film Hardcore Henry and Bo Rhap used in the trailer for Suicide Squad. I think it's great. |

off topic, but I wouldn't say I Want to Break Free is virtually unknown in the US. Almost every person I know who's heard Queen music at some point in their lives knows that song. It's partly because a) it's a great song, and b) the music video certainly gets people's attention |

We Will Rock You is currently being used in a Danish commercial as well, at least on the radio. To me, being used as commercial music is the lowest point of a musical career. |

Well, you have to put it in context. I know the consensus on these forums is that Queen have sold out and what not... milked their legacy to its limit, perhaps. It's hard to argue against that. On the other hand, from my understanding, QP cares more about the casual fans than the die-hards. These people are their primary source of revenue. Allowing their music to be used in commercials and trailers keeps them relevant to younger listeners. Say what you will, but the Suicide Squad trailer surely renewed some interest in Queen at the time of its release. The trailer was well executed and I know a lot of people who downloaded the song after watching the trailer. Perhaps Q+AL and everything else they're doing is blasphemy but Brian and Roger have done a good job in keeping the legacy of Queen and Freddie Mercury alive. I'd say Queen and Freddie are more well-known now than they've ever been in his lifetime. Ten years ago when I joined this forum, hardly anyone in India knew who Queen were. Now almost everyone does. Freddie Mercury is one of, if not the only, rockstars whose veneration and popularity has grown consistently since his death. I don't visit Reddit much but every now and then, something about Queen or Freddie takes the daily top spot. 25 years ago, you probably would not find many people ranking Queen among the greatest artists. Nowadays it's rare to find them outside the top 5. Since I love Queen, I want their legacy to grow, I want more people to know them. I'd love my children to hear about them without my having to introduce them to Queen. Maybe I'm thinking like a casual fan, but from what I've read about the guy, I think Freddie would agree with me. :) |

'You're My Best Friend' has been used by Petsmart for the past couple of years. Watch this 30 second ad, and one can't complain (unless you have a cold heart) link |

The hoover advert in the UK uses IWTBF. Also there's a furniture advert using AKOM. |

People under unfair goverments can enjoy these events too. All these musicians and sportmen didn't help the goverment, they entertained people, just doing their job. Why blame only Queen for that? Double-standards? |
