Just been watching Rock in Rio again. If one can get past the muddy sound and crappy camera work of the official release, the actual performance rocks (listen to Liar and Brighton Rock, for example) and the show -- in front of a massive audience of very enthusiastic fans -- is a landmark one. So I wonder why it's hardly talked about by Queen fans? And is there ever likely to be a better quality visual release (or have we already got the best quality available?) or a proper double CD audio release?
I personally love the start when they appear on stage as I Want To Break Free starts playing. They get some high angles showing just how big the crowd of spectators was.
Definitely one of Freddie's big moments, to be playing to such a huge audience.
This is the bit I'm referring to, in decent quality: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meOz_7y-jKk
Coincidentally, I watched it only last week for the first time in 20 years and getting past its technical failings, as Holly 2000 stated, I loved it, Radio Ga Ga was brilliant. I forgot how good it was, only 6 months before live Aid, they were on the cusp of rock industry.
One criticism ; Freddie's stage clothes, he has had a better.

For me those tracks sound worse than the original mix, and the original mix wasn't good to start with. It's a hard life from the bonus disc dounds like shit.

What we have seen so far on the last Queen releases are great audiowise improvements and a good final mix.
The footage shot on tape is a different issue. Montreal, Milton Keynes, Budapest, Hammersmith and Rainbow are all the same final director cuts. Not to forget the incomplete or missing footage. We will probably never see, apart from Wembley, new footage (stills) or shots other than the bootlegs which are around.
Besides the concert Rock in Rio that was officially released is a combination of both nights

My favourite Queen show! And the 2nd night is really good also! I love Fred's clothes!

Freddie's clothes (drag what you mean: song IWTBF) was all from the first night . The band were hit by batteries and bottles then. Due to this experience the band decided to perform the song , the second concert, without the drag clothes.

I was talking about Fred's clothes on the Works Tour.
IWTBF drag is from the 1st night. About that:
«Freddie wore his oversized boobs for I Want To Break Free as per usual, and the British press reported that the gag upset many audience members as the song was an anthem for the people of South America. They wrote how the audience's negative reaction prompted Freddie to take his boobs off part way through the song, but this was always part of the act as planned. One article even went as far as to say Bruce Dickinson (of Iron Maiden, who performed earlier in the day) saw Freddie in tears backstage after the show wondering why the audience reacted as they did. But in retrospect, this can likely be seen as the press manufacturing a good story, capitalizing on the band's recent issues after playing in South Africa a few months prior.
This article definitely exaggerates things, as an uncut video reveals that nothing was being thrown at Freddie to dodge (also contrary to the article is the chronology of events, as Radio Ga Ga came before I Want To Break Free in the setlist, not after). In light of all this, Freddie wouldn't wear his falsies at next week's show, as seen on the Live In Rio video.»

Agreed. It's all mid range and is compressed to hell.
What were they thinking?
I bloody well hope they remix it if they ever decide to release it. I'd like to see a proper full release of Rio, even if it means a mix of both nights. But yeah, let's have those 1970's shows first.
Strangely the 'Rock In Rio' blues released on the 'A Winter's Tale' cd single sounded pretty good, yet the more recent 'It's A Hard Life' sounds nowhere near as good - as said above it's not sonically up to it, and a terrible reverb placed on the drums. I long for a proper and decent mix of an 84/85 gig - they have a few to choose from that they have multitracks for I believe.

I think they've only started to autotune vocals and compress the hell out of the audio for more recent releases like some 2011 remaster bonus tracks, Rainbow '74 and Hammersmith 1975. I can't remember problems like this on Wembley, Milton Keynes etc. Maybe the person in charge of doing the mixes has changed. Changed for the worse, unfortunately.
