Looking at pictures of Freddie at the Brits in 1990 its clear he was seriously ill at that stage. I think he should of stayed away from the Brits. By going he only added to the rumours that he had aids. Perhaps they could have sent Brian to collect the award and they could of said that Freddie and rest of band were busy working on the next album over in Switzerland. Also they could of shot a video of Freddie for the Brits which showed him in a good light. If they had of done this I don't think there would of been half as much speculation about Freddies health in the press. |

If Freddie appeared with a stubble and maybe wore something different, he might've looked better and there might not have been many rumours. Just a guess though. |
Doga 29.11.2015 20:17 |
That was probably one of his last chances too see friends from the business, so why don't go.? Let the press say whatever they want. |

Doga wrote: That was probably one of his last chances too see friends from the business, so i why don't go.? Let the press say whatever they want.Agreed. It was the last time he appeared in public, before he became a complete recluse. If he felt well enough to make an appearance and receive the award in person, then why not attend? The press will speculate regardless. If he didn't attend, they'd have said it's a sure sign that he's dying of AIDS and can't walk - etc. etc. To hell with the press. |

Roger once said about talking to the press gets you nowhere. You might have just put a target on your head and say "shoot me". |
dudeofqueen 30.11.2015 09:31 |
Freddie's suit was immaculate. As he strode on stage, he had a glint in his eye that smacked of a big two fingers up to everyone who wanted to ask the question. I'm glad he did as it showed nothing more than his willingness to continue Queen until the end. |

Lol. Moog shines again. Very unusual. Anyway, to answer the bloody question, yes I think he was right to attend. Sadly, there is still quite a lot of stigma around the disease, but at least he faced it head on. Just another proof how brave the guy really was. |
Jimmy Dean 30.11.2015 23:32 |
i'm pretty sure he didn't give 2 fucks at that point as to what people thought. i think by that point he felt he was living on borrowed time |
Supersonic_Man89 01.12.2015 04:36 |
I think in some pictures he looks great and others not so much. It really depends on the lighting, how he's posing etc. |
miraclesteinway 01.12.2015 12:01 |
There'd have been rumours whether he had attended or not. In fact it's better that he attended, firstly because he wanted to, and secondly it showed the world that although he may not have been well, he was clearly able to go out for a drink with his friends and thirdly, it was a very special award, gave the band the opportunity to celebrate their 20th year with Freddie (albeit a year early since John didn't join til 1971), and Freddie clearly wanted to be there and share in that with his friends. No, I think there would be nothing to have been gained by Freddie not going. It would be a loss, for Freddie himself and for his friends. |

Careful Marknow, you'll upset folk here with levity, they're a sensitive lot. |

'By going he only added to the rumours that he had aids.' It was more than rumours, he had aids so he might as well have gone. |
Stelios 02.12.2015 06:39 |
and referring to the stigma may i add that there was a 2015 comment on You Tube, going " that man was very brave to touch Freddie" for the host he handed him the award. Of course the commenter may be a troll but still imagine the culture around AIDS 25 years before... |
Costa86 02.12.2015 07:09 |
Queen also received an award at the Brits in 1977 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SO9ChXTJU5I. |

Since he showed up, he could have given a brief speech. He knew the end is near and that he will feed a speculative frenzy with his appearance, so if he made one step, may as well make a second one. |
mooghead 02.12.2015 16:04 |
"he could have given a brief speech" What would he have said? |

mooghead wrote: "he could have given a brief speech" What would he have said?Whatever he liked, that was the last opportunity to wrap and sum up an outstanding 20 years of Queen. He knew it, the band knew it, but Brian's speech was a bit anti-climatic. oh well... |

I understand why he wore that suit, but not until years later when I saw pics of him wearing the very same outfit... but when he was much healthier (years before the Brits appearance). That same suit literally hung on him at those awards and just made him look worse, to me anyway. Maybe a stubble would have helped, who knows. Personally I don't think he realized how frail he looked at that point, otherwise he wouldn't have attended. Of course it's just a total guess on my part, but there ya go. |
maxpower 04.12.2015 03:40 |
It was the same suit he wore in Budapest in 1986 (in the Freddie "relax" bit where he is signing the guestbook & yes in 1990 its hanging off him, should he have attended? Possibly not but it wouldn't have stopped the rumour mill back then & he probably thought f*** it |

Yeah but you know what, he did appear! He obviously felt he should have appeared, so then he should have appeared. I'm sure he was well aware of how he looked. And, at the ceremony, he looked a thin yes, and it's obvious he had a trouble walking, he limped on, but you know, that was his night, his award, and he didn't look hideous - he had his dignity and he walked on with his friends and received the award graciously. Everyone by then had a fair idea of what was going on, and I think everyone felt compassion for him, and he wasn't looking for sympathy. |
Daniel Nester 08.12.2015 22:28 |
I hope no one is saying that at the time people in the Queen fan world knew or thought Freddie was HIV-positive. Because pretty much everyone I talked back then would say things like "he's just thin" and "he just needs some rest, is all." Denial was the word back then. |
