Hi everybody. Maybe most of you have seen this by now on Queenonline.com but there is a brand new documentary coming on the 18th of december on BBC4. I know, there are many documentaries aired in the past and some of them covered the same footage over and over again. Days Of Our Lives was the best one. But the new documentary titled "From Rags To Rhapsody" sounds very promising. This is the content: - Unseen rushes from Keep Yourself and Liar videos 1973 (Queen’s first videos) - Unreleased interviews with the band conducted by Bob Harris from 1977 - remastered from film to HD. - Queen’s first ever TV interview 1975 - recently discovered in Australia. - Now I’m Here Live on Top of the Pops 1975 - Missing believed wiped, broadcast here for the first time. - Live performances from Hyde Park ’76, The Rainbow ‘74 and Hammersmith ‘1975. - The original demo of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and studio outtakes - unheard, until now. Produced and Directed by Simon Lupton and Rhys Thomas - Edited by Christopher Bird Knowing now that Rhys Thomas and Simon Lupton have produced makes me very happy as they did the "Days Of Our Lives" documentary as well. Hopefully it will be released on dvd/blu-ray in the future. Anyway, this is gonna be good! |

It'll probably go unnoticed as it's 'Mad Friday' on the 18th in the UK! |
Costa86 18.12.2015 10:03 |
Just a reminder to those in the UK, who are not going out drinking, that this documentary is on tonight at 10pm GMT. |

What the hell is "Mad Friday"? Everyone seems to know what it is except me who, in all his 44 years of being an Englishman, has never heard of it until today! Is it some more bollocks that's come over from America like "Trick or Treat" and "Black Friday" ????? |

But obviously been a long standing tradition to hold office/work Xmas parties on the last Friday before Christmas. Our party was on Monday (probably the worst possible day), so nothing exciting happening for me. Christmas spirit is best found in spirits it seems. |

Yes please somebody record this if you can |

No wonder it didn't click with me.brians wig wrote: What the hell is "Mad Friday"? Wonder what rubbish of theirs will be imported over here next? It really should be Great Britain celebrating the 4th of July each year - Independence from America! |

More commonly becoming known as 'Black Eye Friday' |

I've been out drinking (4 pints of Blue Moon wheat beer, and I didn't think it too many) but am home now and will record the fecker. But how to get it from my Sky box to the wonderfully grateful people of Queenzone...? |

Shame it became a massive Bo Rhap wank fest at the end :-( |

I recorded the documentary by Mediahhh, I am uploading it on YouTube. :) WOW, what a documentary! Lot of never seen footage, little bits os unused material from Days Of Our Lives and outtakes on KYA and Liar. I loved the snippets from Hyde Park and Earls Court! Great picture and perfect sound in stereo! I can not believe! Of course, the triumph was NIH on Top Of The Pops! Unbelievable! Narrative like the Days Of Our Lives documentary (including some repeated parts from there), and I believe that will come out on DVD or Blu-Ray somehow (in Hyde Park, who knows ...) |
jjbluecaps 18.12.2015 17:18 |
Oh yeah, and there was overdub in DOTA in "overgrown school-boy" ... |
mooghead 18.12.2015 17:20 |
Looked like I saw an Eagle Vision logo in the closing credits, they did the 'Classic Albums' releases and included lots of material on the subsequent DVD releases not shown on TV so who knows... |
jjbluecaps 18.12.2015 17:24 |
Yes, I agree. |
alberbal12 18.12.2015 17:59 |
Yes, i saw it too. |

Here it is. YouTube deleted it due to copyright. link |
soxtalon 18.12.2015 22:42 |
Thanks for that - for some reason though I didn't get any audio? |
jjbluecaps 18.12.2015 22:52 |
Well, I think you didn't have the codec. The video is mpeg4 (mp4) and the audio is AAC. I always use MPC, download it and see if it works. |
tomchristie22 18.12.2015 23:58 |
Looking forward to this tremendously - thanks muchly for sharing, jjbluecaps. How much of the Now I'm Here ToTP clip was included? |

Wasn't the Now I'm here clip with the Gibson shown on the Stormtroopers Exibition. I seem to remember I saw bits of that earlier. |

Yes, it was, but it was much shorter. BTW "recently discovered" ? |

I really loved the footage of the Rainbow with the powercut at Liar, and pieces of Modern Times Rock and Roll etc. After the documentary the Hammersmith gig was broadcast. Was this the same as the current release? I found the imagequality real painstaking and the BBC camera shots were horrible.... zooming in on John Deacon when Brian did a solo etc. |

The 'Now I'm Here' clip has a different audio to the normal version, different lead/backing vocals... |

It seems youtube clips for this documentary are being blocked. |

As well as different vocals, the guitar is heavier, there's no high pitched squealing sound, and there are some different bits in the drums. Maybe they did a complete 'retake' for the TOTP version, like they did with GOFLB? |
Holly2003 20.12.2015 11:47 |
Perhaps they did this to make it easier to mime to? I seem to recall the BBC (or the musicians union) had some restrictions about miming but I cant recall what they were. Did some parts of a song need to be performed live. I think Paul Simon got into some trouble because someone was pretending to play a flute in a TotP performance and it wasn't the original performer. |

I'm not sure about this but I'm sure I heard somewhere that although TOTP was lip synced artists (for a short period in the 70's) had to re record the song because of either BBC union or musicians union rules. This also happened on Good old Fashioned Lover Boy, where we've ended up with an interesting version on DVD |

This also happened on Good old Fashioned Lover Boy, where we've ended up with an interesting version on DVDI heard it was simply a case of TOTP wanting artists to record new versions of songs so that the viewers would think it was live. If that's the case, then somehow Queen got away with only doing it twice - NIH and GOFLB. |

Vocal harmony wrote: I'm not sure about this but I'm sure I heard somewhere that although TOTP was lip synced artists (for a short period in the 70's) had to re record the song because of either BBC union or musicians union rules.Yeah I think it was something like that. I believe they got away with SSOR as they were a last minute additional so didn't have the time to re record. There is the story of KQ where the BBC people went to see Queen pretending to do the final mix of the TOTP version, then swapping it for the original. And if the truth be known, I think this rule went a long way in Queen recording the video for BoRap. Could you imagine having to go into the studio to re record that just for TOTPs. Sod that, let's just make a video! |
KevoM 26.12.2015 15:55 |
I'm pretty sure in the old days on TOTP the unions insisted that all artists performing in the studio had to re-record the track for broadcast. Even so the NIH clip was interesting and in good condition considering. For a moment I thought they were going to show it in it's entirety, but no such luck. There was a lot of old interviews we've seen before mixed in with a few new ones. It looked odd to see Brian and Roger aging and then getting younger! The recent interviews of Roger and beard were like watching Santa Claus/Captain Birdseye! Worth a watch, but not the best Queen doc i've seen. And 'mad Friday' is most definatley a British invention and doubt it would export well to America. Maybe Ireland, Germany and Holland though! |
inu-liger 29.12.2015 05:33 |
Surprised nobody's yet talked about the alternate (instrumentally mixed) studio take of "Polar Bear" playing in the background! That's remarkable since that's the first time ANY Queen version of that song has featured on an official documentary or official product of any kind. |
Oscar J 29.12.2015 11:01 |
^ It has been mentioned in another thread. Yeah, there's a complete remix of that in the doc. Maybe the song will get an official release one day? |
