I just realized that this song is the Gay anthem, every pose he makes, every word in the song is about a man who enjoys the lifestyle. The clothes he wears in the video especially his t shirt (The Mine Shaft) a dark Gay club in New York(Google it). I never thought of it that way kind of amazed it never crossed my mind, but he is The Greatest Pretender after all. Well done Fred ; )
I think Brian didn't "like" the song because of lack of guitars, very pop and maybe the lyrics. Something similar with Killer Queen, he believed that was too pop. But in the End he said a hit is a hit.

That's curious to read that he felt that way about KQ. I never read that. I do know he regards his solo on that song as one of if not his favorite solos he ever recorded.

The quote is misquoted. Brian didn't say "a hit is a hit". He said about KQ "a good song is a good song", even though it seemed a bit too light to him initially.
With Killer Queen I think Brian was worried it wasn't necessarily a song which was representative of the album. The public may have thought Sheer Heart Attack was this album full of light pop songs when it's far from it. Wonderful album though!
A. its not a anthem
B. Its not really about gay, more bisexual. There is the line "I wanna make a super sonic man out of you" in the first chorus but in the second its "I wanna make a super sonic woman out of you". Its mainly about hard partying and stuff like that
