Brian's reworked and reworded version of Lennon's 'God', which didn't get copyright clearance for inclusion on the Brixton Academy live album, is quite interesting, and not discussed often. It definitely seems to sum up what Brian's said was his outlook at the time - Queen was done, and he had to make it on his own. link
This is what I can make of the lyrics. Pretty poor, unfortunately - it's very hard to make out what he's declaring he doesn't believe in, especially once the backing vocals kick in.
The line beginning with 'And our dear friend...' is surely about Freddie - can anyone make out the remainder of it?
LYRICS
The dream is over
What can I say?
The dream is over
Yesterday
I was that once
But now, it is gone
I was the gentle one
But now, I must be strong
And so, dear friends
We just have to carry on
The dream is over
The dream is over
No matter what they say
The dream is over
It has to be this way
We played in spring-time
But now we play the fall
We made the big time
But now we are small
And our dear friend
_______________
The dream is over
I don't believe in magic
I don't believe in (?)
I don't believe in heroes
I don't believe in (?)
I don't believe in (?)
I don't believe in dreams
I don't believe in pressure
And I don't believe we're right
I don't believe in torture
I don't believe in (?)
I don't believe in (?)
I don't believe in (?)
I don't believe in (?)
I don't believe in being Queen anymore
I just believe in me
(?) and me
And that's reality
The dream is over
Dream on
This are the lyrics:
The dream is over, what can I say
The dream is over, yesterday
We were the fab ones, but now it is gone
I was the gentle one, but now I must be strong
And so dear friends we’ll just have to carry on
The dream is over
Ooh, the dream is over, no matter what they say
The dream is over, it has to be this way
We played in springtime, but now I play in fall
We hit the bigtime, but now we are small
And our dear friend let’s hope he has it all, still
The dream is over
I don’t believe in magic
I don’t believe in games
I don’t believe in heroes
I don’t believe in fame
I don’t believe the newsprint
I don’t believe we’re free
I don’t believe in nations
I don’t believe in pride
I don’t believe in pressure
I don’t believe we’re right
I don’t believe in torture
I don’t believe in fight
I don’t believe in colour
I don’t believe in white
I don’t believe in history
I don’t believe in being Queen any more
I just believe in me
Just you guys and me
And that’s reality
Yes, the dream is over
Dream on
A little fact:
Brian simplified the chords of the song, and played them in the first fret, instead of playing it in the 5th fret, as seen here: link
It sounds quite different from John's acoustic version.
