Queen Tokyo, Japan Nippon Budokan May 1, 1975 Some people are going to find this to be a pretty big deal. After decades of seeing three songs from this show (Now I'm Here, Killer Queen, In The Lap Of The Gods...Revisited), for the first time ever we have additional pro footage from Tokyo '75 with audio. The fragmentary silent footage was shown at the "Stormtroopers In Stilettoes" exhibition in London in 2011, with the studio version of The March Of The Black Queen as the soundtrack. A few years back I identified the footage as being from this show, as Freddie's intro to Keep Yourself Alive was a dead giveaway. I recently decided to complete this project once and for all, spending many hours identifying parts of songs and painstakingly syncing audio to the footage with a fine tooth comb, as well as cropping the "unseen archive footage" watermark as necessary (the filmer did their best to stay still, but it was shaky in a few spots). A couple bits of the footage (at :10 and 2:18) are from two different angles, which pretty well indicates that much more footage from this show should exist in the Queen vaults, even if it isn't organized and identified as such. Also included are the two very short clips from the 2002 documentary "Killer Queen" (initially identified incorrectly as being from 1973). Thanks to GinjaNinja who heroically filmed this, to Pittrek for putting a significant dent into the syncing at one point, and to Queen Productions for mercifully showing this wonderful footage to begin with ! The audio is a remaster of the Tarantura bootleg "Young Nobles Of Rock", first released in 2007. It is the best of the six circulating audience tapes of this show. 01. In The Lap Of The Gods [cut] - the last ever performance of the song 02. Son And Daughter [cut] 03. Keep Yourself Alive [cut] 04. Stone Cold Crazy [cut] 05. Liar [cut] P.S. to Queen Productions, if you're reading - I want a job doing this stuff. It looks like you have several angles of footage of the entire show minus the encores from this date, so I would happily compile a 95 minute video for the ages if given the tools. The same goes for Brussels '84, or whatever else that needs the time and care. If the tools exist, then you've got your carpenter right here. In the meantime - enjoy these four more glorious minutes of quintessential Queen ! link Looking forward to hearing people's reactions to this. |

And wow, imagine if full video were to indeed become available. In addition to being an awesome show, it would mean video of Hangman and Great King Rat, both of which are unprecedented. |
pittrek 01.08.2015 08:08 |
Oh - so you did put the wide angle shot of Freddie speaking as an alternate angle of the KYA speech? Great, it makes much more sense now :-) Nice work with Gods, I thought that those bits (you know which) were from previous nights, I never thought about them being just alternate angles :-) And are you sure about the last bit? I only guessed it "might" be the intro from Liar because the only thing we see is Roger drumming. Overall nice work, so we have confirmed they filmed at least Procession Now I'm Here In The Lap Of The Gods Killer Queen Son And Daughter Keep Yourself Alive Liar In The Lap Of The Gods revisited in other words - they filmed songs from the beginning, the middle and the end of the concert. I think it's safe to assume the whole concert was filmed. |

Thanks for putting hard work in this and sharing with all of us! I listened to the first half of this show yesterday. It had been ages since I listened to it and I remembered yesterday why I totally adore this show. The fact that probably complete footage of this show exists is beyond exciting.... I really hope QPL give the Wizard a job so we can enjoy the complete show in the best quality possible! |
tomchristie22 01.08.2015 08:46 |
It's brilliant footage. You should go out of your way to get QPL's attention, I reckon. The camerawork on this particular concert is probably too crazy (those zooms and tilts!) to be appropriate for solo release in their view, but it'd do nicely as a release alongside another 70's show. |

pittrek wrote: And are you sure about the last bit? I only guessed it "might" be the intro from Liar because the only thing we see is Roger drumming.100% sure. Liar is the next song in the show after Stone Cold Crazy, and it was next in the raw footage - and it matches perfectly. |

But let's bear in mind that these are just the angles we have - who knows how many more angles there are in the archives ?! We only have so much to work with. There surely must be more than just a shot of Deacon for the entire second verse of Keep Yourself Alive, for example. It's pretty normal that not every single second of every raw shot is perfectly filmed - the shot of Deacon would ideally be a good thing to cut to for a few seconds at most, then cut back to the lead vocal. |
aristide1 01.08.2015 14:53 |
Nice work and good intuition "to complete this project once and for all", since this may be all you will ever get. I believe the original audio quality could be the main drawback for a potential official release. |

Fantastic effort. I second the appeal to employ some of our crew here on projects, even if only in worst case scenario to assess, review, critique and proof check releases before they goes to market. I've suggested such a 'working/focus group' here to Greg Brooks before. |

Thanks again guys.Roger was completely out of tune. He's a full semitone low in places. My ears shrank to small raisins listening to that. His tone sounds fine, so I think there are monitor issues - he probably can't hear himself properly. |
tomchristie22 04.08.2015 10:35 |
He's definitely out of key. Oscar, I can't recall him singing badly for any other part of the show (though I haven't listened to it for a good while), which leads me to think it's just him having trouble with this song - they're by far the highest notes he had to do in the show at this stage. Furthermore, he sings it badly, to varying extents, in almost every recording I've heard - the fact that he consistently struggled with it seems to prove that it must've been demanding. Yokohama - not as bad, but still not good: link Brussels - top notes are flat, but he's otherwise fine: link Kobe - a bit flat: link Sheffield - a fairly flat at a couple of points Bradford - top notes are flat Manchester - he doesn't attempt them! Cologne - the best I've heard apart from the Rainbow - he gets a few of the top notes spot on, but is a tiny bit flat here and there otherwise. Brussels - top notes very flat Milwaukee - top notes pretty flat And of course, Rainbow - he gets it perfectly in key, including the top notes. The Cologne recording indicates that he's capable of getting pretty close to nailing it, but it appears that he didn't sing it that well the majority of the time. I lean towards thinking the Rainbow version is overdubbed. |

Ogre Battle and Seven Seas Of Rhye has G5's, two semitones below. So they're not the highest notes by that far. What makes this version stand out is that the whole lines are flat in this concert, while other concerts just have flat top notes. Maybe monitor issues combined with a bad night? I seem to recall Setzer/Simon did a little collection of Rogers best version of the song. |

No? Think it was somebody who thought that his high notes in the Rainbow version were fake, and somebody (though it was you) provided links to a few bootlegs where he also nailed the vocals. |
