Meinham 19,200 Freddie hit a C4 -B4 imploding upon the stage. It was extravagant .... BUT very casual for Freddie. Phenomenal! (Whichever concert you got to see with Freddie was probably IT..... recordings ate completely deceptive but thank God for em. particularly with this band) |

The ultimate Queen-show would probably be a mix of japan'79 for the instrumentalists en Crazy tour for the lead vocal... Or, if Freddie was in Houston-like-voice (or even better) in LA 12/22/77 and the rest of the band was on fire like they usually were during that tour, then that might be my pick! |

If Queen only released an extensive 1979 boxed set... I think they have about 25 (or maybe even more) shows from that tour in the archives! |
MercurialFreddie 02.07.2015 11:13 |
Wasn't some part of that archive (Brian's, that is) stolen ? |
Jazz 78 02.07.2015 14:40 |
There are so many that could be considered the best show but for me it was the two shows I saw them at in Providence, RI on 11/14/78 and 8/26/80. To see them in person as a young kid and they were THE band you admired... those shows certainly blew my mind and made a lasting impression on me well into my 40's. |

Wembley '86 was extensively studio-corrected. If you listen to bootlegs you can see that Freddie's voice actually isn't that great a shape at all. |

Live Aid. In so many ways. Hot Space tour was great too. |
The Real Wizard 02.07.2015 21:28 |
To rate concerts purely based on listening to recordings taped in the audience is really a pointless task. There are so many aspects of a concert that cannot be captured by tape. The tapes are great insight into the music, but not necessarily the atmosphere, and certainly not the visuals and the full experience. People who saw Queen 50+ times are probably the best judges. Judging by what the band members have said - Stafford 77, Leeds 82, Live Aid and Knebworth 86 have been repeatedly cited as their favourites, or at least noteworthy. |

I saw several Crazy Tour shows, they were stunning, I don't think i've seen the band play with so much energy before or since. Some Hot Space shows were really good and Works shows at Wembley and Birmingham were very slick, loud and powerful. I didn't enjoy any Magic shows as much although some were really well played and had great crowd response. |

Well I was at the 2nd Newcastle show on the crazy tour '79, and obviously enjoyed it, but Wembley empire pool ,may '78 seemed to be more electrifying, they were blasting it out that night and they were really enjoying themselves, or at least , that is my memory of it all. |

I wouldn't count Live Aid as it wasn't a Queen concert per se. Of course they sounded phenomenal but, then again, they were only performing for twenty minutes. Freddie wouldn't have managed to hit all the high notes had he been on a two-hour-long show, as 700+ Queen concerts show. Of course our perspective is limited by what we can hear or analyse via the, again limited, corpus of released and/or leaked audios and videos, but that doesn't mean we can't have an opinion about whatever little we know. That's the beauty of historical research. Personally, I'd choose one from the Crazy Tour. They were quite great, full of energy, intimate enough, dynamic enough (with Fred playing guitar on one track and Bri playing piano on another), all of them in great shape, and even their outfits were quite nice. |

I've recently being working on a classical production of The Flying Dutchman. There are 48 chorus singers, male/female divided into two groups, an 80 piece orchestra and six lead vocal performers. The production is completely acoustic, no amplification, and has being playing in halls of about 2500. Last week there was a db meter in the venue which measured 108 db's in the loudest sections. The power and volume generated by the performers is mind blowing in places and adds too (and is part of) whatVocal harmony wrote: Some Hot Space shows were really good and Works shows at Wembley and Birmingham were very slick, loud and powerful.I don't get it. Are you going to claim that a classical orchestra should be quieter and classically trained singers shouldn't use their voices. |

I'd like to find out the following: what is the best concert recording in the archive? ? Id est: what is there in existence that can blow us of our feet in the same way as the Rainbow 74 set did? Regarding this topic: I agree with the Wizard... |

I'm going to put my neck out for Tokyo 4/23/1979 here. Although Freddie's voice isn't in the best shape, the other band members were absolutely perfect. Freddie's vocal improvs are also great, and his vocal shape is much better than some later Japan concerts. |

If they'd compile a 1979 box with several hours of unseen and unheard stuff (Paris concerts, Hammy79, audio from other Live killers and Crazy Tour shows), then I'd gladly pay... Don't care about the price. If the box is as magnificent as tha Rainbow box, then I'd be over the moon. |
