I was watching the videos for the Freddie Mercury solo collection the other day, and frankly didn't think that they'd dated well at all... cheesy, overly staged, kinda tacky looking, with the exception of Pretender and Barcelona. I actually think that a lot of the Queen videos are a tad dated too... Scandal being a particular low point. However, I think It's A Hard Life is one of the strangest, most visually arresting music videos of all time... I even think Roger and John look pretty bad ass. So what do you think? A big fan of the vids? |
BETA215 14.05.2015 07:18 |
To me the music is the main thing, the video is complementary. It's true that most of them now look dated, but the music still lives on and it's great! |
Supersonic_Man89 14.05.2015 07:29 |
Yes, i think the videos specifically the early eighties haven't dated very well at all. However, which band's have all 100% stood the test of time? |

Dated well: Bo Rhap, cos of the historical aspect. Radio Ga Ga. 'cos it is brilliant. Don't stop me now. Showed Queen "live", in their prime. Breakthru. Timeless. Save me. See don't stop me now, plus subtle animation . Crazy little thing called love. 'cos it's a masterpiece of pop video production. I want to break free. Groundbreaking and pushing the envelope. Dated not too badly: Probably the majority of the remainder except...... its a hard life. Atrocious then and still so today. |
The Fairy King 14.05.2015 13:14 |
I actually like the Hard Life video. I think Innuendo is still strong today as it was in 1991. Same goes for most videos from that era. The worst are from the Hot Space era imo. Cheesy, bad ' acting' , terrible production, typically 80's. :D |
KJ 14.05.2015 13:21 |
I think Headlong and I Want it all still look fine. Timeless videos. |
malicedoom 14.05.2015 15:02 |
Freddie's solo ones might look a bit dated, but I still watch the later Queen ones all the time. I Want It All Scandal The Invisible Man Breakthru Friends Will Be Friends One Vision I'm Going Slightly Mad Watch 'em all the time... |

A Kind Of Magic has a great video. |

Who Wants To Live Forever has also aged well. One of my faves is Freddie's Living On My Own video - I think it just captured all the partying and having fun which Freddie was into, and in a way it also serves as a visual depiction of the last carefree years for Freddie. It's a window into the world of absolute hedonism and reckless behaviour. It's the only Freddie party which we have on video - I'm sure a lot more footage of that party exists than what was chosen for the music video. Just one or two years later, all the partying would stop, and hard-hitting reality would come by. |

/ . Wow . - Profound, chilling. |

The LOMO video is a bit creepy for me. A lot of the people seen in that video have died of AIDS, Fred included. It was meant to be a fun party video, but it took on a different tone in hindsight, like they were playing with fire. |

Freddie showed these tapes to some friends in Munich. |

Those awful spandex like jumpsuits from THE WORKS TOUR have surely dated. But on the plus side. .. it's a "live style video" Gotta agree with others. In terms of absurdity, it's a hard life holds up. Same with WWTLF, HEADLONG, IWIA, DSMN, SAVE ME, and the odd one YOU DON'T FOOL ME (though not necessarily a true band video) The invisible man is one that certainly doesn't. But it's funnyf for pure CHEESE FACTOR |
brENsKi 16.05.2015 05:07 |
anything that has the "live" or "studio" look will never really date - they'll look "current" in a 100 years' time. so for my mind: Rhap, TYMD, DSMN, IWIA and STL One Vision and Headlong look fine |
Martin Packer 16.05.2015 08:19 |
Living On My Own still works for me. Even if it was the "last hurrah". So it's poignant on that account. Freddie had more fun in his little fingernail than most of us have in total. The video rather shows that. The long version of "Great Pretender" shows that as well. Cheesy? I think it was MEANT to be. |
mooghead 16.05.2015 14:44 |
A Kind of Magic is the best video.... to this day it is brilliant to watch... |
Estranged 16.05.2015 15:34 |
I actually think that Scandal is one of their videos that aged the best. But I tend to prefer straightforward live performances videos, and I'm fond of Scandal, so there you go. |

Queen didn't have the awful 80s hairstyles! I don't know the videos by heart, I haven't even seen them all, but there doesn't seem to be a lot stuff that ties them to a specific era (which is surely what you must mean by dating). Off the top of my head, the computers in The Invisible Man are like that, but what other serious accusations can you make? I mean if you look at a video by an average hair metal or pop band from the 80s, you will instantly recognise the time it came from - the clothes, the hair, the stupid dances etc. it all just screams 1980s. But that's not really so true with Queen. They look quite 'normal' and almost any of their videos from the The Works onwards could have been done in the 90s, or yesterday even. Take I Want It All: it's a black and white video of four men in suits performing a tight rock song in a studio. It's as timeless concept as it gets. How could it possibly ever become dated? |
matt z 17.05.2015 08:07 |
As far as dating. .. and music videos. . Whenever those two words collide I instantly think of the Japanese guy dancing in the POLICE SYNCHRONICITY LIVE TOUR VHS ... It's impossible to escape. ... If only i had the means to GIF it on a live MEME. (The next thing for people with no personality who wish to have OTHERS EXPRESS "what they feel" like a hallmark card with ALREADY PRINTED MESSAGES, THEMES AND TYPE FOR UNIMAGINATIVE SELFISH AND LAZY SHITHEADS) The most dated QUEEN video has gotta be BACK CHAT. .. it's horrible with it's cheap 1980's pseudo gay THRUSTING MACHINES and cages. The frame altering effect just makes it even more embarrassing |
TheAdmiester 17.05.2015 14:58 |
I think any with entirely practical effects have aged well. Basically just the ones that didn't try too hard and miss the mark. Headlong and IWIA come to mind, they're just simple performances with entirely live action footage. The only problem that comes to mind is in IWIA, the picture goes 4:3 during the "one track mind" part and the fade is a bit weird looking. Two standout ones that also aged very well are Breakthru and Innuendo. Breakthru could've been shot yesterday as far as I'm concerned, it's all just simple footage. Innuendo on the other hand is very practical in its effects, using stop motion and insanely good 2D masking. I think it's probably their best video to be honest. |

For me, Keep Yourself Alive dates best, because it looks like antiquity right from the beginning, in a positive sense. And antiquity means to get better with time. Also, Who Wants To Live Forever - the song is about a timeless matter and the video carries that very same spirit. But really, none of Queen's videos really dated bad, because they weren't about being trendy. (I haven't watched much of Freddie's solo videos.) |
kosimodo 20.05.2015 16:47 |
@aion; didnt have the 80's hairstyle? Have you seen john deacons hair in radio gaga?:) |

I'm Going Slightly Mad - always a visual treat. Really adds to the song. Same for A Kind of Magic. We Will Rock You and You're My Best Friend have a fantastic good retro feel to them. |
