Last week I had to do a work related social experiment (in Vancouver, Canada), and I chose Queen as the basis for the project. I approached 100 total strangers - different age groups, ethnic backgrounds, sexes. I asked them 'When I mention Queen, the rock band to you, what is the first thing that comes to mind?'
Here are the results:
34 - Freddie Mercury (Mercury, Freddie, Fred, etc.)
29 - Bohemian Rhapsody
17 - Don't know who they are
12 - Greatest band ever (or great band, terrific band, loved them)
4 - Adam Lambert
2 - AIDS
1- Cute drummer, can't remember his name.
1 - Fags
One man actually bowed and made the Freddie flourish - right in the middle of the street!
Anyway, your opinion of the results......?
Looks pretty much as you'd expect. Freddie remains the person most associated with Queen, and the most famous of the lot. Bo Rhap remains their signature song. Seventeen folks lack knowledge of popular culture (or at least knowledge of very recent historical pop-culture), which fits in with the average incidence of ignorance in the general population.
Reminders of my college days....well done.
As for those not knowing of the band, I just always think back to even the late 70s, when some would quizzically respond 'Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings?'
The reason I asked for your reactions is that I was pretty shocked nobody mentioned Brian or Roger (well, aside that he was cute) or John at all. I expected at least some mention of them. And yet, 4 people mentioned Adam Lambert!

I'm kind of surprised Bo Rhap was the only song mentioned........I would have expected at least one person to say WWRY or AOBTD.....
They probably know the songs but not the band. It's Canada. The country that is never talked about...........

"Hand's up" from OttawaN is very bad as well.
I think the Canadians would love to be a bigger part of Queenzone, but I'am afraid that they get a "Page not found" message when they try to write " www. QueenzOUne.com"

I was raised with Ottawan! "Haut les mains" (French version of "Hands Up") was a big hit here in 1981... I remember I played the 45 on my old mono record player for hours. To put things in perspective, I was only 5 at the time. I never knew they were Canadian, tbh. D.I.S.C.O. (French version also) was a huge hit too, but I was only 3.
ETA: Wikipedia, as well as their official website, say they are French, not Canadian. Blame France!
