Disappointed, I must say. A really unimaginative riff, no clever bits, and the lyrics...? |
The Real Wizard 12.03.2015 15:13 |
Sigh ... very disappointing. The riff is derivative of Uprising, the lyrics are poor, and the "stick it to the man" thing is getting old. Rebelling against authority doesn't look good on you when you're pushing 40. A decade ago these guys had so much depth. Even their last record was pretty good. But if the rest of the new album is this banal, I just may have to turn in my badge. |

They have played the riff live since the very beginning. Now it's part of an actual song, awesome! This is a huge step forward compared to songs like Madness and Follow Me. This song is heavier than anything on 2nd Law. C'mon Bob. Muse has never been a lyrics band. It's so tongue-in-cheek. Psycho is probably one of the more commercially songs of the new album. It's hard to top Origins or Absolution, anyway. They are just having fun. They no longer need to prove themselves. I like the song. It's so Muse in every way. |
Vali 14.03.2015 01:31 |
Woah...... super disappointing to say the least. Very uninspired ... The riff, lyrics, song structure..... First time ever I feel like this after a new Muse leading single (The 2nd Law didn't convince me, but Madness was great and innovative). Hope the rest of the album is delivering better material :-( |
Chief Mouse 14.03.2015 02:00 |
Very different opinions on this one. I think it's okay, nothing too special but I can listen to it. I certainly preferred Madness. |

The show at Belfast featured obscure stuff, indeed. For the more well-known songs, Live at Rome and HAARP at Wembley do the job. The amazing with the Psycho Tour is how they are trying to do the same as Queen in the '79 playing in very small venues to play different material. Drones seems to be a concept album so i'll keep my opinion to it till i heard the full thing. |

... 0 Bloody boring song. The Wizard wrote a good post once about Queen being followers instead of leaders for the first time with "The Works", and "Man On The Prowl" in particular. Same deal here. These songs are bleach copies of Uprising and Undisclosed Desires. Also disappointed that Bellamy blew another opportunity to finally get the tenor high C on record. He'd sound brilliant. Apparently the closing number on the album is going to be 10 minutes of prog goodness, so my hopes are on that one to save the album. |
The Real Wizard 24.03.2015 11:25 |
I actually quite like the second track, and don't think it's at all derivative. They have created a sound that's uniquely theirs. It sure beats them being a Radiohead knock-off on their first two albums. They were sounding like Radiohead when Thom Yorke didn't want to sound like Radiohead, after he had developed an allergic reaction to the pop hook. But for at least a decade now Muse has been unabashedly Muse, almost always with excellent results. link ^ just reading Bellamy's views on the concept of the album has me really looking forward to the rest. He is so smart. But just so cynical. Drones can do good things too: link But good things don't seem to make for good art anymore. Or, did they ever? Dead Inside is a great track - especially the build-up in the last minute. The organ reminds me of Roll The Bones by Rush. And anyone who can fit the words "whilst" and "bereft" into a song is forever in my good books. |
Rick 24.03.2015 14:49 |

Very interesting ! And very unlike them. Refreshing. Musically it's hair metal meets Eddie Van Halen. Impressed with Bellamy's chops. And unlike all the wanker guitars out there, Bellamy is showing off his chops in a way that STILL SERVES THE SONG. Just like Richie Sambora. And Brian May. Great track. |

Video got removed...very clever marketing machine behind the band i have to say. Can't wait to hear the track tho. I love Dead Inside, reminds me of Depeche Mode and i looooove DM. Psycho is interesting cuz they finally used the riff they were fucking around with for 15 years. Lyrics are tongue-in-cheek (obviously)...they just want to hear the crowd yell "Your ass belongs to me". I'd be glad to oblige. :D |
Vali 30.03.2015 04:25 |
hey, I got to listen to Dead Inside at last ! great track ! yes, I love this one didn't like Psycho very much, although it grew on me a little bit after a few more listenings, but Dead Inside's been a bang after just one check. Hope's never lost with Muse :-) |

The Fairy King wrote: Video got removed...very clever marketing machine behind the band i have to say. Can't wait to hear the track tho.Yeah, i noticed, too bad because it sounds really good, the Globalist has three parts, the first one looks like something from a Morricone soundtrack, the second is a really heavy riffage and the thrid is a piano outro, i don't know if the song has lyrics at all. It was also a bit of another song, Defector, with a catchy riff and no synths. I also think it was leaked by the band/Warner and is a clever move. |

I'm happy to say I thoroughly enjoyed the new album. Definitely their best since Black Holes and Revelations. The concept of rediscovering oneself in the midst of delegating tasks to drones is wonderful and timely. Matt Bellamy has furthered himself as a poet, getting in touch with the human condition deeper and deeper with each passing record. I'm still not a fan of the track Psycho on its own, but in the vein of the record it is a vital organ. Muse are almost parodying itself with the style, but that's the point - this track isn't the one that's supposed to be treading new ground. It's the one that the protagonist is rebelling against. The last track in particular, the title track of Drones, an Eric Whitacre style piece of choral music, is the single most interesting thing to happen in popular music possibly in decades. A chorus for the fallen after the dictator has unleashed his fury, not unlike the Soon section of The Gates of Delirium by Yes from the Relayer album. Everyone remotely interested in rock music should be aware of the fact that Muse is setting the trends for what can be done. Just like Queen once did. Muse are by far the most interesting rock band in the world right now. They've been making great records for 15 years now - I honestly didn't think they'd be able to keep up, and with no changes in membership. Most bands this prolific crash and burn by now. |
The Real Wizard 25.06.2015 20:19 |
I've been having fun with the multi-tracks from the Rock Band games, and there are a few Muse tunes in there. Simply due to the excessive compression in the majority of today's popular music thanks to the loudness war orgy, even a cursory amount of time spent on a mix when you have the right tools (i.e. the master tapes!) can result in something that sounds 10x better than the album, where everything can breathe and be heard. With that delightful thought in mind, here's my mix of Butterflies And Hurricanes. Curious to hear your thoughts. I just may do a few more of these. Cheers, Wiz |
The Real Wizard 25.06.2015 20:32 |
And just for fun, enjoy the sheer beauty of the backing vocals and strings on Butterflies And Hurricanes. |
Oscar J 27.06.2015 14:18 |
Matt Bellamy is a great musician, but I very much disagree about Bellamy reaching new levels of poetry here. While the concept had potential, the execution of it is hamfisted, over-explicit and overall heavy handed. "Mercy" ended up sounding like a Disney song more than anything else. There are a couple of jewels in there, but the album as a whole isn't all that great by Muse standards. Could have been so much more with more finesse to the lyrics and one or two more strong tracks. |
Mr.Jingles 30.06.2015 06:53 |
I don't particularly consider 'Drones' better than 'The 2nd Law'. There are some aspects that show improvement, but overall I'd say it's just as good. Both are definitely better than 'The Resistance', which I consider their weakest album. My main problem with 'Drones' is that is not as heavy as they claimed it was going to be. I guess hardcore Muse fans like myself crave for some of those heavy riffs from the earlier albums, and while this is the heaviest of the past few albums, it kinda boggles me how the album starts as a heavy guitar oriented album and then along the middle it starts to sound more like musical. I know this turned out to be some type of 'The Wall' / rock opera type of album, but I guess my expectations led me somewhere else The lyrics are sort of lame at times, which has always been their main weakness. However, from my own perspective less than average lyrics can be ignored by great music. BEST TRACKS: - 'The Handler'.... all the elements that make Muse are great band are here. This could well be one of the Top 10 Muse songs so far. - 'The Globalist'... love the Ennio Morricone type of intro. Middle riff totally kicks ass and one of the most amazing they've ever done. - 'Defector'... some Queen elements to appreciate on this one, but unlike 'United States of Eurasia' this one doesn't sound too cheesy and over the top. - 'Dead Inside'... here's a good example of how to sound retro without sounding like a rip-off. Amazing 80s new wave sound, and yet original in it's own way. WORST TRACKS: - 'Aftermath'... this sounds like a filler song from a Bon Jovi album. - 'Mercy'... Meh. - 'Reapers'... I have a hard time liking a song that sounds too much like something that has been done before, even if it sounds good. The beginning sounds too much like 'Hot For Teacher', and the ending riff is indeed amazing, but it sounds way too much like 'Freedom' from RATM. Not to mention that the middle verse sounds like Madonna's 'Express Yourself'. |
Doga 30.06.2015 08:35 |
They are going to release a new 4K movie, filmed in the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles, and (hopefully) featuring songs like Hyper Music, Bliss or Assassin. Uprising was released as teaser link --- And by the way, i love that new mix of B&H. |
Bo Alex 14.07.2015 22:30 |
The Handler is their best song in years. I really like Drones, but I was expecting an overall more heavier album. But my expectations are always high with Muse. I think their creative peak was the trilogy Origin Of Symmetry, Absolution and Black Holes and Revelations. Something similar with the Queen period of 1974/76 (from Queen II to Races). So I guess we have to wait for their Innuendo, I mean a full back to form later in their career. By the way, I loved your mixs Wizard! Please continue the nice work! |
