hey folks,
I noticed this on a guitar website that I frequent... looks like our man is doing quite well! A bit surprised he beat out Page quite honestly. But he's in the lead right now, lets help him out. link
Page is arguably more famous and influential worldwide. Also, because he was first, people tend to praise him more. But from a technical viewpoint, Brian's a hell of a lot better (as are others such as Hendrix, Howe, Blackmore, etc.).
Being as this was shared on the official Queen page, and Brian May's website, the end result will sway towards Brian. As much as I like May, he's no Hendrix or (arguably) Page. These polls aren't so much a reflection of general public opinion, but more to do with whichever fan page shares them. Micheal Jackson pages are notorious for repeatedly sharing any poll including Jackson in until he tops it, followed by his fans doing a victory dance. Overall, it's kind of meaningless.

I doubt that. Page was a very experienced studio artist, with a lot of ability in recording guitar sounds. He could also play a variety of styles -- blues, rock, folk -- and he could do them very well, unlike Bran who "dabbled" in blues, folk, soul etc. but wasn't that great at any of them. Compare Page playing the blues to Brian and there's really no contest. Page's playing on the Rain Song and Kashmir shows he is technically adept and quite innovative.
I think is deserved link
Besides, is not only the way he play, is his musicianship and the way he arrange the songs. You can say some other players are faster or more agressive but is really hard find other guitarrist with the knowledge of Brian May.
The final result doesn't really matter to me, because I know it's a matter of votes,
however the answer from May does amaze me. Now that's what I call a classy writing. The way he showed his humbleness and said "there is no way to categorise or rank rock guitarists ... the greatest thing is that they’re all different" is just spotted on. By "classy" I mean "smart" and "sincere", not "diplomatic". May is anything but diplomatic. Sure he won't disclose what he doesn't want to disclose, but in interviews his emotions are pretty transparent. link
[ Following his triumph in the inaugural edition of UG Showdown, Queen's guitar champion Brian May has personally commented on the tournament's outcome.
We have to say we are a bit taken aback by the fact that the Doctor took even a second to discuss the tournament, yet alone several paragraphs.
Humble and down-to-earth as always, Mr. May reminded us what a cool guy he is.
The statement (here link ) reads: "I have to take a minute to thank all you folks who sprang to my support in the Ultimate Guitar poll for 'Best Guitarist,' and in the end propelled me to win the whole thing.
"Before we go any further I'm gonna have to say I don't for a moment think I'm 'best' … a better player than all those wonderful players, many of whom are the reason I’m a guitarist at all ? ... Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani, Eric Clapton ? ... well, I don't think so. I'm just happy to have been considered on the same page as these heroes of mine.
"But the fact that so many people voted me to the top in this very enjoyable bit of fun means a lot to me. To me there is no way to categorise or rank rock guitarists ... the greatest thing is that they’re all different and impossible to compare. But this is the first time I've been honoured by so many people as a significant player, so I'm very grateful.
"I have one request. If there is a trophy being awarded for this, I'd like to share it with Dimebag Darrell, who isn't around to enjoy the fact that so many folks are still devoted to him and his great playing. It was a special honour being paired with Dimebag in the final.
Cheers

I MUST learn how to write like that. I have been incidently offending my colleagues with my letters more than often. Or perhaps I just don't have the class of Dr May.

^ Indeed. After the vote result I was afraid that that guitar website would be flooded with haters (honestly I wouldn't place May as THE greatest guitarist of all time, but then I don't know who to put on that throne, they are all so different as May said). However, after hearing what he had to say, who can be angry/upset about that fluffy vote race anymore?
Anyway it has been fun to read the comments below the vote. Some people were actually tired of seeing the name of Hendrix everytime on No 1 so they piled onto other names.
