Battle of Bands- Queen vs. Lizzy !
Ok let's light this up again, with a two page article from 1977.
The Combatants: Queen and Thin Lizzy
The Battleground: America's East Coast
CLEAR THE RING !
Ah, I've read this on the website of someone, but it's nice to see the original article.
I wonder how TL could blow Queen off? And to say "(Queen's)records totally outshone stage performance" is highly biased.
I remember I also read on that website that after the article came out, the author met Brian and Roger again during some event. Roger was friendly as always, but Brian protested "No one blew us off." They didn't took it too serious though, and still keep things friendly.
(Excuse me if you have already known it.)
I attended one show on this tour, have listened to many boots, but I don't think I've ever heard the Queen encore 'Here I Stand' (snicker).
Enjoyed the article. Thanks for sharing.

a) I totally agree with you .
b) I think we won't have any beef because someone adds useful informations here :)

You're welcome :)
Not the first time some press folks weren't aware of the correct name of a Queen song.

Do you remember which show you attended? (because, as the article mentioned, there were shows where Thin Lizzy was on fire etc.)
And could you kindly share your memory of it please?
(I've always enjoyed audience's report more than press's)
And do you think TL stole the show that day from Queen, in some sense?
Briefly, and one person's opinion.......nope.
At least not in the Midwest. The ones that were into Thin Lizzy got a great show. And then they got the bonus group, that blew them away. The term 'surprised' and 'kicked assed' still resonates.
One friend still thinks it was the best concert night (warm-up/main attraction). Who am I to argue?
It was the same the year before when Seger was the opening act.
All camps got way more than they bargained for.
Thanks for this. I've always been fascinated by the Queen-Lizzy tour and this is a great read.
I wouldn't be surprised if some audiences and critics said they performed better than Queen as Lizzy was a great live band.
ps Lizzy was a multinational band, with, at various time, Southern Irish, Northern Irish, Scottish, English and American full time members.
Have to admit Gary Moore guitar playing was very good to the band when he joined on the 77 north american tour. Seattle is a good example duet solos with Scott Gorham "still in love with you" "Massacre" .
Thin Lizzy live is great and I think Queen like it^^
Queen works best under a little bit of pressure, little bit of competition and of limit-pushing.
The 2 bands are amazing on tape, it's a treat to listen to them^^

In 1977 on the east coast of America Thin Lizzy probably pissed all over Queen...
Or you could read the article. Just saying.
Thanks for posting it, MM ! I once read this ages and ages ago and never thought I'd see it again.
A rare example of good music journalism in the 70s.

True words. A lot of articles lost themselves in basic informations and banalities about a star or a band. Even if someone doesn't agree with the content of this article, it offers some substance and a point of view by the writer instead of the usual "Freddie was born in Zanzibar...blabla"

Aye.
But I was particular referring to when journalists slagged bands for the sake of making a name for themselves, which Brian even refers to in this very article.
