Would someone please enlighten me as to WHY the actress/singer CHER is regarded so well in the gay community?
I was flipping channels and saw a playing of BURLESQUE on the tube and it occurred to me. .. CHER is regarded well among queers..... but I just wonder WHY?
I know she had a few hits. She's had a few great acting roles (MASK being the best) but overall, She's been esteemed by this region even BEFORE she had the transsexual daughter.
Is it just the gaudy outfits?
I understand queers and the whole Judy Garland/Liza Minnelli thing (over their hardships; drama of being misunderstood, tragic etc)
But WHY. .... Cher?
I mean. .... it sure as hell isn't the Allman Brothers connection
With regards,
Me.
Ah! That was going to be another guess (sort of) that *it'd be easy to dress like her in drag.
But eh, she's not exactly ugly IMHO. But she also wasn't giving Linda Ronstadt a run for beauty.
Maybe there's a deeper mystery to be discovered. I think I'll send this one off to MIKE TYSON for next season's Mike Tyson mysteries
I was amazed the first time decades ago, and I'm even more amazed after all these years, ........that people use the words 'queer' and 'homo' on, of all places, Queen message boards.
I said a similar thing here a few weeks ago, RE the term "queer" (although this is not a dig at Matt for saying it). I was informed, by the person who used the term, that he was in fact gay himself, and that it was acceptable - even among gays - to use the term. He thanked me for trying to be respectful, though. Unfortunately I forget who it was (sorry).
Edit: It was 7thStranger I had the conversation with.
Really?
Now what should we all NOW call "them" , I've been of a mindset and understanding that queer wasn't derogatory.
In fact a huge part of their acceptance sloganeering had been "we're here, we're queer, get used to it"
Homo means SAME. It's a prefix in the language
Homogenous
Homonym
Homosapien
etc.
But I think it's predominant use is for males. Feminazis have even gone so far as to term women WOMB- MEN (which is kinda clever)
Anyways. Words like fag etc are used frequently in the gay community. I have friends that hang with queers all the time. The females are sometimes referred to humorously as fag-hags.
For a raunchy bunch (*not ALL are) I think I didn't use it disparagingly. They're not so uptight about that unless its non gays using the words "fag etc"
Kinda like the usage of the n word among American blacks (and now thanks unfortunately to gangsta- crap) even wiggers and chavs
Anyways, back to the subject. Upon googling my question there seem to be a multitude of answers. The most likely of which is I guess an admiration for an exaggerated strong female identity.
That and embracing a marginalized group identity (women and homosexuals) who exerted a strong image in the face of discrimination and a masculine society. I.e. if SHE can be that OUT THERE, so can I along with it.
Thanks, the few of you that offered an answer. It reallyWAS a serious question
