Hi guys, I'm new here (though have been lurking for a while, and liking Queen for >20 years), and I heard you guys eat newbies for breakfast, so I'm ready ^^ When I first knew Queen back in 90s, it was only through their hits as those were the only available ones in my country. Queen became one of my favourites among The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple,... (boring expected list you might say). I knew very little about their personal life, cause for me music was all that matter in a musician's life. But then, this year, when I attended a work orientation talk, the speaker listed several celebrities whose their lives and jobs didn't go as they first intended at all, among them I was most impressed with Brian May purchasing astronomy at first. It inspired me to open youtube and explore more of Queen's songs and wow! It just blew me away. I didn't know that Queen could rock so hard. My current obsessed tracks are the kind of Stone CC, Ogre Battle and Seven SOR. But I also love their ballads such as All Deadx2, Save Me, 39. Interesting one, that 39, I have never heard a song about the theory of relativity that sounds so melodic yet so simple and profound. "For many a lonely day sailed across the milky seas... Your mother's eyes from your eyes cry to me": summing up all the emotions of Interstellar movie into one phrase. I still think music is all that matter in a musician's life, but as the musician poured so much of heart and soul into his music, so a peep into his mind would be helpful for the listener. I have been enjoying you guys' posts in here, especially some with keen musical knowledge. I hope you continue, even though this forum seems to have some technical problems, and now and then there're some trolls having fun. I'm buying several Queen's CD and DVD from amazon, the Rainbow 1974 is just heaven. Everytime I listen to Queen now I discover something new that I haven't noticed before. They have so many layers and cover such a wide range of styles / subgenres. How can you do waltz like The Millionaire Waltz ? It is so strange yet beautiful. Glad to have them around for my long tiring unproductive days ^_^ |

Hi and welcome! You like Tolkien too, huh? :) |
hobbit in Rhye 22.02.2015 06:45 |
Hi Chief, thank you for the welcome^^ I'm a Tolkien fan too (I hope you wouldn't think that I mentioned the "fan" term too easy. When I count myself as a "fan" I would invest a lot of time and energy for the subject and, usually, get really emotionally attached.) Right now I have to rant about Queen and there's no one around me interested in them, so here I am :) |
Chief Mouse 22.02.2015 06:50 |
I've read LOTR books and The Hobbit. I love them. Can't call myself a proper fan though - I don't have nearly as much knowledge about the books. Haven't read The Silmarillion either. LOTR was definitely the best thing I've read in my life, I was most excited reading it. |
hobbit in Rhye 22.02.2015 07:01 |
Great to have someone with 2 common interests with me! I have read The Silmarillion, it's great but in my opinion can't compare to LOTR, so you don't miss much. Tolkien is my main source of english learning (his writing is so elegant and epic), other than the obvious rock bands listed above. So naturally I'm very interested in the fantasy stuff of Queen, such as Rhye, Orgre Battle, The Prophet's Song (I dig this one, can't imagine how underrated it is). |
Chief Mouse 22.02.2015 07:13 |
By the way, feel free to check out the Announce (downloads) forum link Lots of good stuff there, especially if you're just getting into Queen (or re-discovering, as in your case). Queen were also an excellent live band. |
hobbit in Rhye 22.02.2015 07:27 |
Thanks for the suggestion, I'm looking at that link right now :) I agree that they are monsters in Live. Though they made lots of mistakes live (who doesn't?) but the sheer energy they emitted can shoot anybody to Mars ! Watching Freddie singing AND playing piano, Brian thrashing and ukulele-ing, Roger drumming and backing up vocals like a diva, John ballading his bass line as steady as a stallion, is such a bliss. |

If You have the money just buy the first 8 álbums. that Queens prime. My favorite era is the first 6 records, but Jazz and the Game were good as Well. |
BETA215 22.02.2015 13:42 |

(the books, not the films) You mean LOTR being as a rehash of The Hobbit? Not sure if that's a good comparison. I personally enjoyed LOTR way more than The Hobbit but each to their own ;) |
hobbit in Rhye 22.02.2015 14:45 |
Thank you guys ^^ I remember seeing your names while I was still lurking unregistered in QZ :D @Mr.Mouth: Thank you for the compliment. I'm not sure if I'm clever though. So bear with me if I act silly sometimes. I'm just a peace lovin' guy. Glad to be a QZ buddie of yours :) @mike hunt: Yeap, I'm gradually doing that. So far all Queen's albums have hit and miss to me, but boy when they hit it they did it good~~ @ BETA215: Greeting, and thank you for the detail list of must-check. Those are lots of stuffs to indulge in. I have yet to look at the unreleased songs but you have a great collection there :) @master marathon runner: thanks for pointing me to Man on the prowl, I didn't know that there was a Version 2.0 of Crazy LTCL :lol By the way, are you against the films? (LOTR and Hobbit.) I love both those books and movies, though the movies are quite different but I think they are well-made in their own merit. @ Chief Mouse: me too, I enjoy LOTR much more than Hobbit. Hobbit is like when Tolkien was still finding his voice. LOTR happens when he found it and boom it to the max. |

/ \. . Absolutely not against the LOTR films, they are masterpieces, loved them -its just that I found the books a bit plodding, where as the hobbit book seemed a more cohesive, to the point story, easier to read. |

Well, LOTR books definitely more serious than The Hobbit. But it really depends on the taste. I guess I prefer LOTR because I read it before Hobbit. |

So did I, / Ironically, with the hobbit being a much shorter story, Peter Jackson decided to drag it out over 3 films, which has met with a lot of criticism, and lack of critical praise and awards or even nominations. Just a late thought, despite Howard Shore doing a terrific job with the score,- wonder what tQueen of old would have done with the commission. I imagine something wonderous |

Welcome hobbit :-) its interesting reading how you discovered Queen and your enthusiasm, of course everyone on here was like that at some stage, and I still discover old & new bands and dig deep to find out more, and am quite often amazed, Muse being a fairly recent discovery. My journey with Queen started back in 1974 when I saw my first gig, lost count of how many I've been to since ! Enjoy it on here we are a good bunch...... mostly :-) ask as many questions as you like and we will all try and help you get the maximum Queen enjoyment ! |

Welcome, Bilbo! |
hobbit in Rhye 23.02.2015 16:02 |
I agree that Lord of the rings feels plodding at the beginning, however when the story grew, it got out of Tolkien's hand and carried him away. It reached to the epic stuff that he wrote in earlier years (Silmarillion etc.) which he had no idea how to control. It makes for a great sense of real adventure if you know what I mean. Like when you travel abroad, you plan it beforehand carefully but it eventually end up in every direction ^^ I definitely want to hear what Queen would have done for The Hobbit movie sountrack. I wouldn't change any tiny note of Howard Shore on that LOTR though, best movie OST of all time IMO. Hi gorski, I've seen your youtube channel, nice guitar covers, but you don't look like the real Bruno Gorski in the photo though :D @Djdownsy: greeting, and glad that I brought you good laugh^^ Hello andyb1968, lucky you to go to the good-old-days Queen gigs. I have an obsession for live music, I've been going to everything live I can afford, even if going alone and in a foreign country. So you could imagine how envy I am for you :) May I ask which is the best Queen gig that you went to? |

hobbit-in-Rhye wrote: I definitely want to hear what Queen would have done for The Hobbit movie sountrack.Actually I kind of always think Ogre Battle could kind of fit into LOTR. You know, 'the great big eye focused in your direction' and the ogres are naturally the orcs. Kind of, at least....? |
master marathon runner 24.02.2015 03:14 |
/\. Why aye, spot on! |
hobbit in Rhye 25.02.2015 14:51 |
Good point noorie^^ When I first listened to Orgre Battle I did think of Tolkien's orc battle too (though the Orgre in the lyrics is more like a Troll..?). With the song's thick harsh guitar sound and agressive drum beat, its light and shade quality (Freddie's voice here is rather elvish against the background), it would be a great company to a Middle-earth battle. I could even hear "March of the black queen" (live short version) when Sauron assembled his army :D |
Chief Mouse 25.02.2015 15:16 |
To be honest, it is a brilliant idea. You know, films have surround mixes. Remove the 'music' channels and you'll get dialogue with SFX. Someone could easily make a scene with Queen music like you imagined. |
hobbit in Rhye 26.02.2015 13:26 |
I'm not very good at technical stuffs, but when I have time I'll give it a try. A long time ago I made some very simple music videos but now I couldn't even control my computer :D ================= By the way, each time I look at the old Brian and Roger now I feel a heavy nostalgia. They used to be so young and mischievious. Of course they have aged gracefully, and look much better than I would possible at that age, but still~~ Time doesn't wait for anybody. Right now people bitches about how "silly" Bri and Rog are acting, but I'm sure when the pair is gone to join Freddie we'll all feel a big empty hole in our chest. At least I will. (Don't know what's got into me today) |
