Artist Martin Munoz came to the United States 40 years ago without knowing a word of English. Today at 74 years of age he is sending 20,000 books back to his home province of Mendoza to create an English Library completely out of recycled books he has gathered from his Catskill Mountain (Upstate New York) home.
By spending nearly his entire savings, and with the support from his relatives the books are now en route to Alvear Argentina. This campaign serves to help him gain capital to buy a property to establish an English Library/Art Center in Alvear Argentina.
*Who put this together?
My name is Otto Ohle. I am a student studying within the New Media department at Purchase College. I have been documenting Martin's story as a NYC legend, outsider artist, and his perseverance and struggle to create this library in a documentary photography book and film titled, "The Llama Man".
Martin really needs your help. In his words, "This is a way to show the world a side of America they don't see in the media". Please help share this project and help influence new ways of creating harmony on earth.
The money you contribute completely towards making this Library possible. I am prepared to help and document this story as it unfolds.
By Martin depleting his savings as well as receiving financial assistance from his family, he was able to purchase a new shipping container on his own . By hand and by himself he loaded this container with 20,000 books which is now on its way to Chile via boat, and then must be transported to Argentina.
His plan now is to travel to Alvear and find a home for these books. He doesn't have much money to put a down payment on a property or rent a building. We are asking for donations in exchange for his artworks.
This project requires a mountain of money which Martin does not have. If we as humans work together to support Martin's effort, the story could inspire lives across the globe to make the world a better place.
*WHAT WE WILL USE THE MONEY TOWARDS
$2,000 - Travel and living expenses to document this story as it unfolds.
$5,000-$8,000 - It is unclear how much it will be to have the books transported from the port in Chile to Alvear Argentina. We will need to rent a truck and hire a driver to do this job.
$15,000 We are asking for startup money to find a home for these books. Funds will be used towards putting a down payment on a property and buying a structure such as a yurt.
*The Impact
This is a creative and useful way to recycle books. As English is the second language to the world, this library has the potential to expand possibilities for those in Argentina with access . Martin hopes to work with the community to create an exchange program and have American students teach English and art classes in the library.
These books all are used books that Martin collected in New York State and City. Martin didn't know any English when he first came to NY, and claims that books are what taught him the language, and helped him become independent in the USA.
*Together, we can all make a difference, Martin shouldn't have to do it alone.
This story of dedication and perseverance will also be documented in a multimedia book/documentary film entitled "The Llama Man"
*Risks & Challenges
If we don't raise this money, the journey will simply be a lot more difficult to establish a home for these books.
We are prepared to travel to Argentina and speak to the mayor of Alvear, as well as the Director of Culture of Alvear, other Art Centers, and of course the local people to work with the community to establish and English Library with English and Art classes for the townspeople.
Martin is also willing to sacrifice his apartment in the city of Mendoza in order to establish a building for the library in the city of Alvear.
