A friend of mine just sent me this: link
There's a lot of details about Freddie's childhood here that I've never heard about, looks like it's mostly from Peter Patrao, a former teacher of his in Mumbai.
Has anybody here heard of this person before or of the claims in this article? I mean, it's mostly trivial stuff but still things I've never heard of before ("Buckie", boyfriend in Mumbai, etc.) and was wondering if anybody can validate any of this.

Most of the stuff there has been told quite a few times.
It's well known, from various sources, that Freddie's nickname as chool was "Buckie". His band at school was indeed called The Hectics, but I'm sure most know this.
Regarding him having had his first sexual encounter there, this has been mentioned in other sources before, including in at least one book. I don't know how it can be possible to confirm it, of course, or that anyone should really care. But various sources say that he always was quite different in his attitude - he used "darling" a lot from an early age, and acted gay.
I always felt that Freddie had a certain reluctance to speak about his past, and many others have said this too. I agree that he didn't really want to be associated with Zanzibar or with India. He did mention he was a Persian a few times in interviews though. But I do think he was very keen on being seen as British, and not as a foreigner from a distant land trying to integrate. He was a man who was meant to live in a country where stuff happened, where you could become famous and be part of something big. Living in London was what opened the door for him. So it's understandable he didn't care much for his past mundane life in Zanzibar, or his days as a boarder in India.
yes there was no doubt at all that freddie was gay because he was a flamboyant character at school as a child.
He covered the gay issue up later in life with trying to go straight with Mary Austin but he got so frustrated with pretending to be straight.
He was always gay and that is how he rolled!
Would have been very boring if he was a straight freddie because all his artistic flair and performances would have been so different.

there's a subtext there that "straight" is somehow boring, univentive and dull. surely not another one of your "Gerralisations" ?
For every Bowie, freddie, Elton, Rob halford & Michael Stipe there's a Percy Plant, Dio, Rod Stewart, jagger, Daltrey, Bonnet and Bon Scott.
being gay doesn't give you flair, any more than being straight makes your constrained.....being creative gives you flair and being dull makes you constrained.
"Would have been very boring if he was a straight freddie because all his artistic flair and performances would have been so different."
Its just an ignorant thing to say... as if Freddie would have been less of a showman if he was heterosexual.
The article itself is less to do with personal memories of Freddie and more to do with general attitudes in society in that part of the world at that time, lots of assumptions. Should be taken with a pinch of salt.
