The audio mix is the exact same as on the very high generation copy we've had for years, so it's a cleaner version of that. Great to see this footage is still in safe hands. Any chance someone could rip the video (link and share just that little Queen portion? |

But the fact that the original tapes still exist are great news. Too many oportunities lost, like Budapest and Munich. |

I've read somewhere (beg your pardon... it was a long time ago, can't go into details) that Queen were the only band authorized to officially release the concert in some form. So they legally acquired all the original masters, or direct transfers, in 1985 by a fact. They have both nights (audio/video) stored in their archives and only need to remaster the all thing to make it look and sound better, and I think they could really do a remarkable job considering the "It's A Hard Life" live in Rio bonus track for the 2011 version of "The Works" (link and the video snippets presented in "The Great Pretender" DVD/BD (link. By selecting the very best of both nights (preferring the first night, of course, and leaving 4/5 songs for the second) and giving the all thing a new improved audio mix I think they could make a GREAT release. Remember that this was a very important gig and deserves the right amount of respect (first big rock festival in South America and Queen were headliners, biggest audience they ever played for...). In the blu ray they could also put on both nights in full plus extras like interviews, soundcheck, tv reports.

In my dreams: HAMMERSMITH ODEON BOX (Hammy '75 + Hammy'79) HYDE PARK + EARLS COURT BOX (full Hyde Park + best of Earls Court) HOUSTON BOX (full concert + Bob Harris documentary) LIVE KILLERS BOX (all that is available from this tour) SOUTH AMERICA BOX (best of 1981 tour in South America + full Rio '85 concerts + extras) JAPAN BOX (Tokyo '75 + Seibu Lions Stadium concert '82 + Tokyo '85) |

Queen had the best lighting rig back in the day and it was used for the entire event. Weird seeing AC/DC performing under it. Peter Hince wrote in his book that he had to wait few days for the video masters and audio tapes. (maybe Queen dont have original masters and Peter had to wait for a transferred copy. |

Of course, Beta. it's my pleasure to collaborate here ;) Here's the full translation of the part of the video only of the Queen, uploaded above in mega link by Beta https://mega.co.nz/#!7hphRAZK!b5CSJPsIp6In8gRV371Xhe_OZJu_13eCUm04OqqtIHk OBS: I know some stories having to do with the occasion of the festival or the artists in question and then joined with the descritions below, alright ? Something may be a little messy or meaningless here or there in text, 'cause I conclud did the final translation with the help of Google Translator.. So begins: * Roberta Medina (vice president of the Rock in Rio event, Obs: I did'nt know her, but I think a sexy womam :D) hehe " I was not there, but all I hear, all the talk, the power of those images viewed from the Queen, really show that Freddie and Queen in 1985 are the Rock in Rio icon " * Roberto Frejat (drummer of one of the greatest Brazilian rock bands,called 'Barão Vermelho' revealed that the great artist, poet and singer named Cazuza, which unfortunately died in consquense of AIDS too ... :( " That show of Queen was emblematic in the first festival, I have no doubt " * John Barone (drummer 'Paralamas do Sucesso', one of the biggest and best bands of the Brazilian Rock scene, which opened some shows for Brian May in England on tour 'Back to the Light'. Note: They recorded with May this time a song together called: Vampire bajo en El Sol. They are fans of Queen and obviously the vocalist and guitarist of the trio, his name Herbert Viana, has a replica of the Red Special autographed and plays with it in various occasions in shows with the band. " Queen represents the Mega moment of Rock in Rio " * Roberto Gurgel (drummer of another successful band in the 80s, called Blitz) " The insane audience singing with the guys, I think it was the highlight of the festival, without a doubt " * Ivan Lins (singer, songwriter,great pianist) Note: remarkable artist of MPB [popular Brazilian music], influenced by known as 'Bossa Nova', even if I'm not mistake has played along with the Masters João Gilberto and Tom Jobim. " Was a song so I did not think wonderful (referring to Love of my life), but watching there performance exhibited in that way, my eyes filled with tears " * Elba Ramalho (singer and interprete of Forró and MPB music) " I remember that show them the first rock in rio, was unforgettable, very very beautiful" (Note: she participated in the festival too, and tells the story or myth, she along with other Brazilian artists had been "snubbed" when they would like to meet personally Freddie. When your accessor communicated saying that there were great also famous artists who admire him a lot and liked to meet him, so he replied saying ironically: 'How can they are famous like me, since I never hear about them !' " lol * Amin Khader (backstage coordinator) " The band is the Queen of Rock in Rio until today " * Eduardo Dussek (singer-songwriter) " Families accepted, rockers accepted, the metalheads headbangers accepted the band " * Roberto Frejat (again): " My housemaid, to get an idea, was a fan of Freddie Mercury and Agnaldo Timóteo (great voice, a brazilian singer of romantic music) " * The reporter covering the arrival of the band by helicopter : " The Queen is coming to play at Rock in Rio. The rock stars are arriving at the heliport and near the stage. Before that landing all flew over the city and have seen from above the expecting them down here " * Amin Khader ,again (backstage coordinator) (The funniest part, no doubt ). So he begins by saying : " I was informed that he (Freddie) would get an exact time, as soon as you hear the noise of the helicopter, prepare the Saquê (japanese drink ?) in the exact nineteen degrees because he really liked saquê and all he requested of the food and it was all prepared the good and the better for him. Then, when I heard the noise of the helicopter, I was nervous and I was there running to the helicopter stopped. He walked into the backstage and I thought, soon Freddie Mercury send call for me and I was very nervous, oh my God. I came and he opened the door and asked me, in Brazil has hurricane? I said no, Brazil is a tropical country and has no hurricane. I thought: will he's afraid of the hurricane, may be raining a lot but not ... and that's where he said he spent a hurricane now here ! When I enter in backstage, he had given an attack, saquê burning the carpet, broken at the top, had papaya pasted on the ceiling, watermelon was shattered in the mirror ....! ! ! Swept here and he dirtied there, then I said: Hey, if you want to stay that way, so it stays that way, or I'll be gone and you want get in this filth I'll restore it all ! Then after I arranged and cleaned everything he calmed down, has calmed down because he had made a very special request !.... It was not drugs or something wrong. It was a personal thing I need had to sign a term that was not going to talk about....After then I went backstage to take personally what he had requested, he told me to come in and then received . Then we became friends ... " |

Combined with the 1976 story about him smashing a mirror over his personal assistant's head (and forcing him to clean it up), we're getting a not too pretty picture of what he was like when things didn't go his way. |

I always find it strange how much film they threw out, considering the cost of the film, you'd think they would have kept it.
Doga 10.06.2015 16:23 |
In my work, even if i shot Raw i usually downgrade the pictures for storage purposes, knowing most of my photos won't see the light of the day again, and with the size of a picture in Raw or TIFF i could storage thousands of JPEG files. External harddrives can be expensive. With this nowdays example i mean maybe keep a tape is cheaper or easier than keep a reel of film? And, maybe they thought it won't have any use in the future? They stored it in tape or whatever and that's it. Anyway is very sad. |
||
KevoM 24.06.2015 06:57 |
Storing film is also expensive, probably more so back then!
emrabt 24.06.2015 09:17 |
Storing film is difficult, leave it at room temperature for too long and it disintegrates, get it too cold to quickly and it curls. Leave it stored in a freezer for more than 15 years, it fades and turns to jelly. You need proper cold storage and people who know what they are doing because it also needs to be gradually warmed before use because of condensation. Tapes are a lot cheaper and easier to store. This is why most things were stored on tape after editing. |
