What are your top 5 favorite shows. What are they what do you like does a recording exist and is it worth a listen? |
Mrmarioanonym 18.01.2015 17:17 |
1973 Glasgow - slightly rough quality and incomplete but amazing performance 1976 Boston - all-around solid performance, one of the best recordings 1978 Vancouver - just a nice Jazz tour show in great quality, plus Fred still sounds strong 1979 London - all-around great show, Fred sounds strong (even though Newcastle was even better, this has better quality) 1986 Mannheim - great quality, great vibes, strong Freddie (he does have even stronger shows on this tour though) there are stronger performances on these tours but somehow these specific shows are what i enjoy the most. i couldn't decide, so: 1976 Osaka (evening show) - best medley Bo Rhap, Fred is very focused throughout 1979 05 01 Fukuoka - one of Fred's best gigs 1982 11 03 - one of Fred's best gigs, best Play The Game and WATC 1984 09 07 - one of Fred's best gigs from the spellbinding London run, best It's A Hard Life 1986 07 12 - one of Fred's best gigs, amazing One Vision and WATC, especially on the radio broadcast. |

My personal favorites: 5-1-75 Tokyo (solid quality, great performance, setlist has everything - Hangman AND See What a Fool!) 76 Boston (gotta put that in there, just cus the quality is ridiculously good!) 77 Seattle (love the Races shows, again great quality) 78 Chicago (great quality, and even though Freddies not at his best, the rest of the band is on fire) 2-17-81 Tokyo (great quality, Freddies sounding good, and I love the extended 'Flash medley'!) |

well he does hit some rarely hit notes. So rare, he didn't even hit them in the studio. |

Hehe - love threads like this. The disintegration notes on Fukuoka are definitely up there as being Freddie's best. Haven't heard that much passion in a long time. A really good show that I personally love is the Kassel 1982 gig. There's sooooo many great moments on that show (Somebody To Love, Now I'm Here/Dragon Attack, etc). It's about as good as the future UK shows. |

Oh crap, another show I gotta download now........LOL At least I can just put em all on my hard drive now instead of filling up memory card after memory card....:D |

Munich's got the worst quality though. Leeds and Edinburgh are awesome companions to the Milton Keynes show! |

There's something to be said about the final Body Language and Play The Game, Greg. Not saying something positive, but certainly something. |
The King Of Rhye 19.01.2015 12:04 |
LOL.......I havent listened to that karaoke stuff in a while, maybe I should later just for a chuckle! I also really like the Frankfurt Hot Space show myself....(if you dont want to hear it, fuckin go home!) Leeds is pretty good....... might be a contender for 'most enthusiastic audience'! |

Mrmarioanonym wrote: There's something to be said about the final Body Language and Play The Game, Greg. Not saying something positive, but certainly something. I hear passion on Body Language. The polyphonic squealing on that song has more soul than any Aretha Franklin record. Play The Game has its moments! A good note here and there! :D |
Doga 19.01.2015 17:03 |
Rainbow 74 (March Show) Budokan 75 (1st of May) Boston 76 Earl's Court 77 Budapest 86 Not the most imaginative list out there, but what can i say, i like these shows. |

Gregsynth 19.01.2015 19:13 |
The versions from Phoenix 1980 and Oakland 1980 are amazing. The 1st Sao Paulo version also has a 1st class version! |

Freddie nails the C5 in Bo Rhap during the Uruguay show. Another great show is the New York show from 1976. While Boston's the most popular, New York's still excellent in its own right! |
Wiley 20.01.2015 04:16 |
Urk '83, for sure, followed by that show where Freddie mumbles his way through BoRhap's verse after forgetting the lyrics. |

The best Queen shows I've been to. . . Wembley 78 Brighton 79 1982 a short run of Hot Space shows in Europe which I witnessed from a privileged position. Wembley 84 Newcastle 2015 ( yes seriously) Although they were good shows I don't think the Magic tour was really any better than what had come before. Likewise 1980 UK Europe although the shows were brilliant, they were no better than 79 Newcastle 2015 best post Freddie atmosphere and a singer that seems settled as the vocalist rather than someone fronting the band saying look at me |

Got any story from Brighton 1979? Did they do Brighton Rock? It's the only one of the shows mentioned that I haven't heard a bootleg from, I think. |
Mrmarioanonym 20.01.2015 11:08 |
i think that Body Language may be one of the most cringeworthy on stage moments in their career, although the song itself doesn't help. YOUR BODAYY! SEXXXXXXXAAY! Imagine this song at Wembley 1984 or better, imagine Lap of The Gods (and Revisited) in 1984 |
brunogorski 20.01.2015 11:55 |
Fun fact: When Freddie sings "Body" that way that sounds like "BODEEEHHHHH", it sounds like "BODE", and bode means Goat in Brazil. LOL. I always think of Freddie singing "GIVE ME YOUR BODE (GOAT)", it's hilarious. |
The King Of Rhye 20.01.2015 12:49 |
I've got a case of a Goat Language! LOL |

It's the only one of the shows mentioned that I haven't heard a bootleg from, I think.Brighton was the loudest gig I've ever been too. John Harris returned as FOH sound guy for that tour. He was more of a volume freak than Trip. I remember a review in International Musician of the Clair Brothers PA used on that tour, it said in Bristol during Love Of My Life BM's solo was hitting 110 Db. The Brighton show was full of energy and they were really tight and focussed. I remember the opening Jail House Rock being very faced paced, Liar was blisteringly loud and powerful ( best version I've ever heard) and yes they played Brighton Rock which Freddie made a point saying wasn't really in the set any more but "you fuckers would let us out of here if we didn't play this" He also said that he wanted all the boozers and piss heads Brighton is famous for to use their lungs and sing this, as an intro to Spread Your Wings. To this day I think that gig would have made a great live album |

Great stuff. When did Harris leave again for Trip to take over? Anyone know why? |

John Harris was taken ill during the US tour 76 (I believe) John was employed by Queen as a permanent crew member. Queen had hired a Clair Brothers rig for the tour so they were approached to find a short notice replacment to finish the tour. I'm not sure what the illness was but I know that the recovery time was well over two years. In the mean time Trip became their go too guy. Harris, by the crazy tour, felt he wanted to return. He did the tour but my understanding is that he no longer enjoyed being on the road and retired from live work after that tour |
