GB: Queen Archivist 16.12.2014 19:45 |
Greg Brooks - Is his archiving work now done? Someone asked here... Short answer: No. Not yet. Long answer: Clearly the recent Live at the Rainbow '74 products prove conclusively, even to the moaniest of the moaning Moanzone moaners here, that the work goes on. And long may it continue if recent product is anything to judge by. I spent a year of my life working on those boxes with our small but dedicated team, and like every other fan I've spoken to about them, since they emerged in all their purple glory, I think they are amazing. Rather like the actual concerts themselves, those products (particularly the 4-LP and deluxe boxes) are utterly stunning, and elegant, over-the-top, and worth waiting for, on various levels. I witnessed my friend Jim Jenkins actually moved to tears by the November concert when he saw this latest rendition on screen for the first time, earlier this year. I for one was, and remain, extremely proud of these things, and being part of them. Some of the more observant among you will have noticed there was a significant archive element to the boxes, and extensive sleeve notes and photographic research, etc. Those archive and research type elements are part of an Archivist's job. They didn't magically appear one day. There are some very lovely pieces of memorabilia in the box for you guys to look at too; rare Queen treasures to touch, feel, experience. And many of you will never have seen or held such things before - this will have been a first. We brought these stunning little details (like Brian's original 1974 tour Itinerary and promo sticker, and his mum's tickets and dad's hand-drawn map) right to your fingertips for the first time. That's a good thing isn't it!? Every single review I read (be it from a professional journo, or a fan) was positive and flattering. And now there are more projects of this type on the radar and they too will require extensive archival research on various levels. That's a good thing too, isn't it!? Or should we not bother! The next stunning Queen concert gem is being considered carefully right now. This week, we are in the archive again looking into precisely what we have to offer you guys next, and that includes which items of memorabilia are the most interesting and rare. It will be something exciting and on a par with 'Live At The Rainbow '74'. PLUS, there are several other projects in the pipeline that fans like you and me have been waiting decades to have and enjoy. They are coming!! A lot of this stuff begins… where?…. in the archive which the band carefully and meticulously gathered, and which has all been sorted and logged and scrutinised… and not by fairies or fairy kings. Thus, I conclude Greg Brooks' archiving work is NOT yet done. Not by a long way. |
BETA215 16.12.2014 21:17 |
But I have a question that everyone is asking: that stunning Queen concert gem that is being considered carefully right now, is from the 70s? It will be released because of his anniversary? Maybe, next year? Given that Rainbow spent one year of your life. Anyway, I'm very happy to hear this things! I hope a lot of projects gets released, and maybe some Anthology. But that's sand of another sandbox (LOL). |

i'm thinking GB has an idea what's next and is so giddy, he had to post that! lol - he can't tell us what it is... he's not ready to lose his job yet! Thanks for teasing us! at least we know there's something worth waiting for. And if you happen to pop back in here - fantastic fucking job on the 4LP vinyl! More of those please. And if it's worth anything --> i think many of us would be very happy with an all anaolgue re-release of every queen LP..on vinyl...in non-remastered form while waiting... Beatles Mono Box LP set is the reference point. We will pay. |

Are we all supposed to start chanting Houston '77? Because I think that's what we should all start chanting. Otherwise we'd gladly take hammersmith '75 or Earls Court '77 which are in all likelihood next in line. |

Thanks a lot for this high class product from the QPL. Let's hope for more live and studio releases of the same level in the future. It'll be great to find some more detailed technical/historical information in the sets about the recordings in the future. I mean, for example it'll be interesing for fans/collectors to know which song from which show in November '74 was used in the final product. And why 1st encore from March '74 show wasn't included. |

If you are reading Greg, The Rainbow project is an absolute gem indeed and all of us are so appreciative of all your hard work. Like so many other fans, I have been waiting years for such a grande release. To hear more work is being done on future releases is wondrous news. So hope it's Earl's Court or Houston or maybe even Hammersmith 1979. Can't imagine it would be Hyde Park 76 as it isn't complete..........or is it?! |

Tips for "perfect" releases - BBC boxset which will include all remastered sessions, the Golders Green Hippodrome performance, the Christmas 75 performance (complete) and the Live Aid performance on CD, and the XMas 75 show, the Live Aid show, all TOTP performances and as much of the Bob Harris footage as possible on DVD and/or upscaled BD - Hammersmith Odeon 75 + 79 CD/DVD/BD releases - Hyde Park 76 including all pre-show footage you have, maybe even the opening acts - Earls Court 77 - 2 separate nights, don't combine them into one - CD+DVD - Houston 77 - a merge of a new HD scan of the Bob Harris footage and an upscale of the old NTSC VHS footage, with all the backstage footage we've seen in various documentaries as bonus stuff - a Live Killers box - you mentioned years ago you have several incomplete soundboard recordings of various LK shows, couple them with all the incomplete TV footage and you have again a perfect release - Knebworth Park 86 - combine the DoRo footage with the colour-corrected audience footage (if necessary), add all DoRo documentary/backstage footage and sync it with the complete soundboard audio, and put it in a book with the hundreds of photos which are available - a promo video Bluray boxset - containing every existing version of every single video which was shot from Queen between 1973 and 2014, of course all in HD, plus add all outtakes/behind the scenes footage If anybody "important" reads this - anything from the list would be a bestseller |

It will be bought by the fans/collectors anyway :) 2) Complete performances of both nights on DVD/BD/CD in Super Deluxe Box Set for hardcore fans and collectors. Same for Rock In Rio '85 concerts. Similar scheme was used for recent Deep Purple's Made In Japan 40th anniversary reissue. Why no-one ever mentioned 2 or 3 recorded/filmed Paris '79 shows ? |

Shame you still had to display your bitterness towards some fans with the veiled "that's a good thing. Or should we not bother?" Remark. Yes, Rainbow was a stunning product, a superb release up there with anything from any band. However, don't be happy to crow about the praise for it in interviews if you're then not willing to also accept mostly fair criticism of other, in places shoddy and poorly received, releases. In fact the unanimously positive reaction to The Rainbow shows that fans are NOT just moaning about, or pointing out massive errors in, other releases just for the sake of it. I am genuinely excited to see what coming next now the camp has set the bar so high with The Rainbow! :-) |

But as we all know there are issues with Freddie's mic. Could this be fixed and if so how? There are two nights of Earls Court to work with. They have the multitrack and probably two different live mixes for each night. The piano vocal mic *may* not be present on the induvidual channels on the multitrack (if that's even really true), but they have them on the live mixes - and they are easily mixed within and into the multitrack elements, it would just require more work and they couldn't manipulate those vocals as much as they'd probably like to. The idea that they don't have releasable mixes of both nights already is laughable in itself though - of course they do. |

All the signs points to Hammy 75. The product was already done. Is the 40 annyversary. Tha fact that is eclipsed by Rainbow doesn't mean it isn't a great release. Add a bonus audio concert from that year and i'll be happy. And this is the point where the experts in Queen enters. What concerts can have Queen in the archives from the ANATO tour, Hammy aside? |

How many? How long was it work for? How much is new on it (aside from the obvious Brian vocals)? Was Golders Green definitely not filmed? BBC seemed to use it for a lot of filmed concerts e.g. AC/DC. From Wiki: BBC[edit] In 1969, the BBC were looking for additional television studio capacity to cope with the introduction of colour transmissions[8] They took out a long leasehold on the Hippodrome to 2060[9] In 1969, the Hippodrome was converted into a radio studio and concert hall with reduced capacity of 700 seats, as the BBC had been looking for a north London venue, and became home for the BBC Concert Orchestra, and also saw broadcasts and concerts from the BBC Big Band and BBC Radio Orchestra. As a concert venue, it was used in various configurations for: Light music concerts - including Maria Friedman[10] Rock bands - the first were Queen in 1973, Jethro Tull in 1977 and many that followed were for the John Peel show including AC/DC, ELO, Barclay James Harvest, The Kinks, UFO, Procol Harum, Roxy Music and Stiff Little Fingers[11][12][13][14] Theatre - including an early performance by Sir Ian McKellen in a performance of James Saunders play A Scent of Flowers, which became his first West End performance and his first Award[15][16] Boxing - as both a regional and national venue[17] Comedy - including performances before he won New Faces by Jim Davidson as well as two episodes of the first series of Monty Python's Flying Circus in October 1969, The Val Doonican Show, and The Roy Castle Show. The BBC recorded various radio specials at the Hippodrome, including the famous BBC Sight and Sound concert of January 1978.[18] AC/DC's 27 October 1977 appearance at the Hippodrome for Sight and Sound in Concert was later released on DVD as Live '77. |

Holly, re: >Was Golders Green definitely not filmed? I've never read (or heard) the possibility being discussed before............ CMSDrums, re: >I'd love hammersmith 79....plus maybe Hammersmith 75 with it for completeness A "Live At The Hammersmith Odeon" box would make a really nice item. The audio and visuals are all complete and there's plenty of merchandise they can choose from to flesh out a ridiculously expensive Super Deluxe Box Set; quite why anyone wants reproduction ephemera is beyond me, but, each to their own I guess........... Interestingly though, with the venue still in operation and under corporate branding, would there be any restriction on the band using the old name of the venue in the title as opposed to the current venue name? Would they have to remove reference to it and go "Live In London" etc? If the venue doesn't exist (as Earls Court soon won't) there would be no issue I'd imagine........ |

I haven't had the least desire to complain about the Rainbow box because those few things I don't like about it (I think the replica tickets and stuff are a little...sad) are utterly insignificant when compared to all the great stuff, which indeed included the lovely book. But I do think it's a little disturbing that GB comes on here to get a little ego-affirmation. Does he really care this much about our opinion? Does he really seek validation from complete strangers? Or does he just want five minutes of attention and the kick of seeing his topic flooded with reactions? |

Every 6 months or so he'll appear asking for something for nothing or blowing his own trumpet. Its all rather crass in actuality - we KNOW that Live At The Rainbow was a great release in every possible way but isn't it simply him just doing the job that he is paid for and, finally, doing it properly? Either way, the predictability of the chubby beardy chap is what makes him so endearing. I vote that we run sweepstakes on the exact date on which his next posting is and a poll on whether the standard he set with The Rainbow will be met on the next release. |

Second is the way Freddie's voice was digitally meddled with. It's only glaring in a few cases, like on Fairy Feller, which is just difficult to listen to once you notice it. Really though, there's not much fault to find in it. A really stellar release overall |

I think merge the two nights was the best decision considering this. If that is the case of Earl's Court i wouldn't mind a live album of the two nights merged. |

Also just want to add that a couple of minutes in Greg states that Let Me in Your Heart Again was a complete suprise when he heard it as he didn't know it existed and it 'wasn't written or listed on any tape boxes'. What!??!? I give you exhibit 'A'.... linkI wonder why he's not replied to this... |

I saw Rhys Thomas in my Islington local on Friday night. Was going to introduce myself and discuss the progress of all this stuff. And gloat about scoring more than him on Mastermind. Alas, by the time I was suitably refreshed he'd gone. |

Somewhere there is an SQ encoded quadraphonic master for Golders Green. Failing that there's a BBC Transcription Disc in SQ since it was broadcast in SQ in the USA. None of the bootlegs we have of this concert are the SQ encoded version, but maybe it is in the archives. I have a contact that can do an amazing job with computer software decoding SQ (and no not the Adobe Audition scripts, it's MUCH better than that now). This would permit a DVD-A or a Blu Ray with 4.0 quad lossless, in addition to the stereo version of the show. A number of Rick Wakeman albums are now being released as special edition two disc sets, a CD and a DVD-A/V of the quadraphonic mix. So there is a market for this sort of thing. |

"They are coming!! " What ever happened to the rarities box sets etc crap, not sure why he posts here, only when he wants something or justify something, just go away.....none of the fans opinions matter anyways, they will release what ever they want. He needs to go away because i haven't seen anything worth while from him. Do your job and go away. It's all up to BM and RT what will get released. |
