He is still very much alive today through his music - I don't think even he himself realised how famous he would still be. I wonder if in 200 years time he will still be so widely remembered, like the great composers such as Bach, Wagner, Mozart etc. are remembered. |

Honestly, Freddie is a figure larger than life, so it is very hard to think of him not being around. He is like an elusive figure just around the corner. You know he is there even though you cannot see him. I am not drunk, and I am not crazy (I think..) |

I think Queen and its members are more famous now (for their talent, rather than their excesses and non musical stuff) than in their prime. While Freddie was (and will always be) someone larger than life, let's be honest: His current fame is in great part a work of Brian and Roger, who talk about him in the best way possible, always with huge respect to the point that they had been trying to minimize as much as possible Freddie's "dark side" long before his death until today, taking care about the way other people wish to use the Queen brand in order to have success etc etc When people talk shit about Brian and Roger for having the wish to play the music THEY made and claiming that they are disrespectful to Freddie (and glorifying John for his retirement and not "turning Freddie's music into shit") I always remember that it was Brian and Roger the ones who gave interviews since Freddie's death, cleaning the shit people threw at him when he died, while John simply retired and never gave a shit about Freddie's last days or reputation after he died. Both Brian and Roger may have taken wrong directions from time to time, but in the end their goal is the same: Celebrate Freddie's and Queen music and expose it to the masses so they all can live forever. ------------------------------------------ To me, the sad thing about Freddie's death is that he just could not enjoy the pleasure of being recognized for his amazing vocal skills, his showmanship and his musicianship, instead of being exposed in the media as a drug addict, irresponsible lover and gay star surrounded by morons and excesses. (sorry for the long post!) |

Saying it here, though it may be convenient for gathering tributes, kinda amounts to preaching to the crowd. That said. LIVE IN MONTREAL/WWRY is playing again tonight. (sorry for the long post!)You can thank the english press for taking down Queen and making them look like a supeficial band because of Freddie's flamboyance and his larger than life persona. Instead of seeing the great musician he was (Roger has said it in interviews numerous times that Freddie was underrated has a musician. How can you write a song like TFFMS and not be a good writer/musician?) Also for the British intelligentsia it was more important focusing in Freddie's being gay and how morally he was depraved (all the gay people in the 80s didn't use condoms and they still don't in the 2000s, which is worst now because we know more about the disease). For them Freddie's death was a proof that a man who lived like him had died because he had bad morals. So for the last 20 years Brian & Roger have tried to reestablish the legacy of Freddie and show how a wonderful musician and a good person he was despite not taking seriously the threat of Aids. |

Freddie Mercury was simply the best of the best. We will never see his like again. You'd think that after 23 years, it would be easier, and tributes would simply roll off the tongue. Well, it hasn't gotten any easier: we all still love, and miss, this fantastic talent. RIP Freddie, and thank you for all the joy you've given your fans :) |

What can be said about Freddie that hasn't been said before? A true legend, no doubt. Us as fans will always miss him, the music world suffered a tremendous loss when he passed as well, and the surviving members of Queen lost a brother. Freddie's family lost a son and a brother. The only thing Freddie missed out on is making more music, and watching the decline of the state of music as it is today. Having said this... Winterspelt, I agree with the majority of your post, save the bit about John. To say he never gave a shit about Freddie's last days is absolutely untrue. Perhaps he wasn't as vocal about certain things as say Brian and Roger have. John was very close with Freddie and I think your remarks are a bit out of line about him. Just my 2 cents. |

Although Queen have a large fanbase and are generally regarded as one of the best British rock bands, they haven't received the same critical adulation from the music press which bands like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin have received. I feel that is unjustified, because 70s Queen are very nearly on par with Led Zeppelin in terms of musical ability. |

master marathon runner wrote: Those remarks about John were unkind, ill informed and well below the belt. (...) Best wishes John, if you're watching. They may be unkind but they are true. John didnt paid a visit to Freddie at all while he was dying. Even Brian (who wasnt Freddie's "best friend") did visited him from time to time. It is not ill informed, it was written by Jim Hutton, who lived with Freddie, and AFAIR, Peter Freestone wrote something like that (or told something about that in an interview, TBH I cant remember, but both guys did mentioned it) Also, John have never made something to try to celebrate Freddie's music: He dont need to play once again, if he want to stay forever in his retirement its ok, nothing wrong with that, he dont even need to be in the spotlight, a simple video or an open letter on Queen's site are examples of who he could do something to honor Freddie. Im not the kind of guy who likes personal attacks, I dont have anything against John, I love his music a lot! Its just that people tend to think their heroes are amazing, nice and loving friends with each other etc. The truth is that they are humans too and they may see other band members not as a friends but as coworkers. Some of us may see their coworkers as true friends, some of us may not, there's nothing wrong with that. |
master marathon runner 26.11.2014 11:23 |
It's ill informed in the sense that, we dont/didn't know John 's state of mind, his sensitives, how down and depressed he might have been, whether he was capable of seeing his great mate in his final decline. We cannot judge sir! |
winterspelt 26.11.2014 14:38 |
I do understand and respect your point of view. None of us knows what happens/happened in John's head so its clear that in one way or another any of us may be right (or may be wrong) but at lest in my opinion, the evidence suggest that John simply dont care. You know, most of the artists release open letters, statements etc that are not even written by them, but by their management, PR staff, etc I cant believe nobody in his office have a few minutes to write something for the Queen site. How many seconds could John spend in asking someone to write something about Freddie's passing? How many minutes can he spend listening drafts of the "JD's press release about Freddie"? 23 years and not a single word about Freddie written by him or his staff/family/QP staff/someone on his behalf, but he got time to criticize Queen+ Robbie William's WATC! Unbelievable! How can it be? Brian has released lots of albums, tours, finished his degree, fight for badgers, write books, do interviews, Roger released lots of albums, tours, etc and still they or someone from their staff can find a few minutes to talk about Freddie! I can understand that he just felt unable to deal with Freddie's death in the first few years, while the press was talking shit about Freddie, both Brian and Roger were there for Freddie, even Brian "the nice guy in rock" turned into some kind of bitter guy for the shit he was having in his personal life (and Queen) but still found strength to be there for Freddie! But no word from John or someone on his behalf, but as long as RW did a song, then he forgot he was retired and didnt liked the spotlight and suddenly he went to talk about the Q+RW WATC! Why, instead of talking about RW, used those precious little moments to celebrate his great friend Freddie, who was always there for him? |
Costa86 26.11.2014 15:03 |
My very biased, unfair, and, frankly, ridiculous opinion, given that I don't know John personally is: The guy was always a bloody boring, introverted, square and awkward chap. He was good on the bass and wrote some hits, but other than that he would have faded away into nothing had he not had the luck of meeting the other three. He can't speak his feelings because he's a wet newspaper with an underdeveloped character - if he were a day, he'd be a rainy day in the western highlands of Scotland. I still love John though. Not as much as the other three, but close. |
Thistle 27.11.2014 01:12 |

Geez. No opinion. No backing up his mate. No artistic tribute to the merits of Freddie's life. It's all so damn speculative. I think it's important. NAY, I say ... NECESSARY to remember that. ... Hey, John. If you're no longer using your basses, i don't see the harm in just letting one of them go. I really enjoyed your deep sounds on A KIND OF MAGIC and enjoyed your strangely rhythmic stylings on things like PAIN IS SO CLOSE TO PLEASURE. .. even though it's A KIND OF FORGOTTEN TRACK. The point is. I LOVE the work you did on the BIGGLES soundtrack and I even LOVE "MY BABY DOES ME" ... I may be the only person who feels as such. And then RAIN MUST FALL .. I feel it's an underappreciated tribute to the style of STEVIE WONDER in the 80's and I find it's beautiful It resounds with a lighthearted groove then culminates with a blazing guitar solo that leaves you wanting for more. The point I want to make ( *and this may be the 12th time I say so in the annals of this site) Let me have one of your basses if you're not using them. I'd really appreciate it. I've worked out a semi original method of tapping supportive melody on songs that doesn't encumber the player. It would be great and almost transcendent to be able to present this method on one of your basses. I had a cheap o p bass that I'd rewired with EMG's. But unfortunately it had been stolen years ago. I understand the broad- simplicity of the instrument and know it's capabilities. I'm just asking to have one of your basses since you'veretired. Long time fan. Used to be an incredible historian of QUEEN music until you stopped participating --- Matt -Z from California Keep in touch John. link Looking forward to your response. Btw. I once annotated all the bass notes I perceived in THE MILLIONAIRES WALTZ one time. It was jarring for a kid, but in reality I figured out it's really very basic for someone who's got the ears and sensibility to understand the 12 tones in the western music sphere. I can't guarantee I can pull off what you've done *(brought tamla Motown style James Jamerson style bass lines to the public BEHIND successful and beautiful songs) but I'll try! Cheers. Love John Deacon. - Matt. P.S. I'M kinda serious. C'mon, John. Even on a contingency "BASS-IS"!!! |

I have talked about this a lot of times and usually people jump to the conclusion that I hate John or something like that, but the truth is, I love every single one of his songs, they are very different to everything Brian, Roger and Freddie did. Perhaps I see it in this way because most of the musicians I like (Blackmore, Malmsteen, Zappa, Fripp, Waters etc) tend to be assholes in real life, lol |
