Getting straight to the point here... :) Is it the worst solo EVER by Brian? From 1970 until now I have always enjoyed the Guitar Solo, not so much this year though. The solo is very lazy in comparison to what Brian has done in the past. It leaves a very stale taste despite the fact that Brian is visibly stimulated during the recent tour. It was all very organic but now... I don't know tbh...It just sounds stale, ordinary. Any thoughts? |

We all know the doc's solos aren't what they used to be. Most musicians in their late 60s aren't at their peak anymore. But his chops are still in great shape overall. He nailed that solo from I Was Born To Love You each night in Japan. I'd say his solo spot peaked in 1993. It was in sections like John Bonham's Moby Dick circa 1973. Absolute excellence on the Brixton Academy live album. |

I saw him this year for the first time, so i don't have any previous live concert experience to go by. But I thought it was great! He gave his heart and his soul that night and was the primary reason that I was so enraptured by show. In many respects I felt he has become the star! |

I havent seen all the gigs from this tour, but I have to say that the guitar solos I saw were a little bit "generic" Still, the rest of the show (except one or two shows in which he played bad) were top notch. Could it be that he has been enjoying more playing in the band than before? At least thats what I feel. |

Well, for those of you who havent heard any, this is the first link I got when I searched for "Queen+ Adam Lambert Brian May guitar solo" link There are better solos, of course, this one reminded me a little to the song Brian played with the great Edgar Froese, more atmospheric than rock... There are some dates which are more into the rock side. |

Anybody ever comprised a BM solos anthology? |

the best solo from Brian (for me) is Last horizon, Bijou and Just one life guitar version... BM solo 2014 : link Great between 3'50 and 5'50 and between 11'00 and 12'15 |

One notable one is his playing on the Jimmy Gnecco version (way better than Chris Cornells) of 'Someone to Die For'. Very clever use of the chord sequence and not too pentatonic really.... |

Brian Mays solo on Rainbow particularly the first show is compact and fabulous and never outstayed its welcome ... I always skip this on the other live releases ...although I'll listen to Live Killers version all the way through on occasion...but I've heard the 2014 version and it does nothing for me...it would be the one part of the show I wouldn't enjoy ...but I know a lot of people still love those loonnnnggggg solos...not me...each to his or her own ;) |

Oscar J wrote: When did Roger get those puny rack toms? It's the kit he has been using since the beginning of the tour. He's sound doesn't seem to be compromised by the shallower toms. In the last couple of years there seems to be a gradual decline in deep shelled tom-toms. Although there are still a lot who use them. Thinking back to the 70 's Keith Moon used quite shallow rack toms and still had a very powerful sound. Also the less depth in the shell produces a clearer sound as far as FOH mixing goes. |

Note sure what to think of Roger's playing nowadays. Don't know if he's too low in the mix on the shows or if his chops are just to weak to cut through (probably a combination of both), but it all sounds like a mush to me. He looks so physically limited. |

Or do you have any idea of how they've been doing it? Even since the Q+Paul tours?? They're not doing Brighton Rock, or Son & Daughter, you know............ |

I enjoyed Brian's solo here in Perth when they played in August. I've never seen them live before but know there live stuff quite well. I thought his guitar playing was very good considering his age. Same for Roger, I thought his drumming was very solid. I was impressed to see him playing Stone Cold Crazy as well as he did. :) |

He looks so physically limited.Physically limited? Well, yes, specially considering that he's not a very active drummer! It must be very hard for him to get back to shape... Specially at his age! The thing you mention about the mix, may be a combination of acoustic of the venue (in case you were able to see them live) or the audio from the videos you saw... It may be that they didnt used proper mics in Roger's kit cause they caused some issues with the descending Q. They had to use some custom clips that may cause a different tone. Here you can see them in this pic: |
