It's Friday afternoon and I'm bored after a few boring office meetings, so I wanna do a little "what if" game... Imagine, that you are responsible for "Queen Forever", you have full unlimited access to the archives and you have even the power to force Brian and Roger to go back to the studio and do some re-takes. There would be just one condition - the album should be a combination of old songs, new versions of released songs and new songs (aka "previously unreleased" songs). Also, the tracklist should "motivate" your fans to buy the album. What would be your ideal tracklist? Mine would look something like this ... CD 1 01. Procession [standalone version] 02. Father To Son [standalone version] 03. Son And Daughter [BBC version with "shovel shit" restored] 04. Ogre Battle [Deep Cuts version with shorter intro] 05. Keep Yourself Alive [De Lane Lea demo] 06. Doing All Right [Earls Court 77] 07. Seven Seas of Rhye [version with full ending like in the 2011 instrumental remix] 08. My Fairy King [BBC version] 09. White Queen [BBC version] 10. The March of the Black Queen [a proper standalone version] 11. Killer Queen 12. Modern Times Rock 'n' Roll 13. Silver Salmon [finished version] 14. Jesus [De Lane Lea demo or a new heavy re-take] 15. Mad The Swine [with restored "I've" intro] 16. Now I'm Here/Dragon Attack/Now I'm Here (reprise) [Milton Keynes 82] 17. Liar [Rainbow 31.3.1974] 18. In The Lap Of The Gods revisited [version with full ending] CD 2 01. Brighton Rock 02. Death On Two Legs 03. Tie Your Mother Down [Knebworth Park 1986] 04. I'm In Love With My Car [Rocks remix or Hollywood Records remix] 05. '39 06. You're My Best Friend 07. Stone Cold Crazy [Trent Reznor remix] 08. Tenement Funster [standalone version or retake] 09. The Prophet's Song ["finished" extended version - if Brian remembers what he had planned with the song] 10. Flick of the Wrist [standalone version] 11. Love of My Life [mix between album version and Rio 85] 12. Lily of the Valley [standalone version] 13. You Take My Breath Away [Hyde Park 1976] 14. The Millionaire Waltz 15. Somebody To Love [album version with the new "rock" ending] 16. Bohemian Rhapsody 17. Teo Torriatte [2005 HD mix] |

Band Forever 07.11.2014 09:43 |
Dave 76 add these to your list. Who Wants to Live Forever with Freddie's vocals only - Brian's too weak. Rock It with - Freddie vocals. Roger's voice too husky for all round Queen quality. |
dave76 07.11.2014 09:53 |
I've added those 2 early this year. They're better indeed |

What about : Sail away sweet sister ( Freddie vocal ), she blows hot & cold ( 2014 remake ), I dream of Xmas, freedom train, I go crazy (2014 remake ), New York at last, my love is dangerous ( Queen remake ), the great pretender ( Queen remake ), the golden boy ( Queen remake taken from Freddie's demos ), love is the hero ( Queen remake ), money can't buy happiness, how can I go on ( Queen remake taken from Freddie's demos ) and that's just for starters ! |
matt z 07.11.2014 10:20 |
Great versions! Had no idea Freddie did a version of send in the clowns. Is that for real? A piano except from garden lodge? 1. It's late 2. Princes of the Universe 3. Under Pressure 4. fun it 5. More of that jazz 6. $ candal 7. Money can't buy happiness 8. Was it all worth it? 9. Made In China (Made in Heaven/Chinese torture remix) 10. I'm going slightly mad 11. Jesus 12. We believe 13. There's no turning back 14. Laugh or cry 15. Still burning So far I've only got this ^ |
matt z 07.11.2014 10:25 |
.... on second thought. .. Made In China should be the opener. It's thematic. I can't figure out where Shove It fits in. |

This is something my wife and I created two months ago, (of course we did, Moog), so thanks for starting the thread. It would be a 2CD maximum, $19.99 USA dollars release. Well, you've got the 'new tracks' Add on a few touched up Freddie demos (including 'Man Made Paradise'), listing them in the credits as 'original version from the Freddie Mercury 'Solo Collection' or 'Mr. Bad Guy, the 2000 Dave Clark remixes, and a couple of Queen Universal bonus cuts, Along with.......... some properly remixed BBC versions, listed as...and this is important, 'from the upcoming complete box set 'Queen BBC Sessions', due to hit the stores in the Spring/Summer/Fall of 2015. I have to spend some time reading the above listed ideas, most good, while some of the last posts were 'wtw' ...or were they designed to pull our legs? |

1) Let Me In Your Heart Again (Rock version) 2) Staying Power (backing rerecorded/updated) 3) State of Shock 4) There Must Be More To Life Than This (Unheard Queen version with MJ) 3) Man Made Paradise (Queen version) 4) Love Me Like There's No Tomorrow (Queen version) 5) Back Chat (backing rerecorded/updated) 6) One Year Of Love (backing rerecorded/updated) 7) Your Kind of Lover (Queen version) 8) Time (Queen version) 9) Mr Bad Guy (Queen version) |

I guess some people didn't get the tracklist narrative. I thought it was obvious. Maybe I should change "fun it" to "fuck it." and indicate that STILL BURNIN is intended to mean that I'm still going to burn a copy. |

"What would be your "ideal" tracklist on Queen Forever?" 1. Let me in your heart again |
jondickens1 08.11.2014 09:55 |
We could/should've had a full Queen studio album rather than forever. My track list for that would've been: 1. Let me in your heart again. 2. Love Kills. 3.There must be more to life than this. 4.Victory. 5.Man made paradise (Queen version) 6.State of shock. 7.Sail away sweet sister.(Freddie vocals) 8 It's so you (Queen version) 9 Face it alone. 10 She blows hot and cold (Queen version) Other than Face it alone, where it's unclear if there are enough vocals from Freddie, I feel this could've been a realistic expectation without even having to scrape the barrel so to speak. And these are tracks we all know about off the top of my head. Instead we get 3 tracks on a compilation album which I've ordered but yet to receive. |
*goodco* 09.11.2014 00:38 |
So much here to work with and comment on that I am going to focus on what a hypothetical 2cd release would have been, and will save my comments on the demos for another day. After all, they'll be in an anthology shortly, right?;-) Would anyone care to answer any of the questions that follow? FYI, since GH III, I have not purchased any of the compilations or remasters (though I have copies or have heard most of the bonus materials) 07. Seven Seas of Rhye [version with full ending like in the 2011 instrumental remix] Never heard the instrumental remix until today. Guess I need to check the listings and youtube more thoroughly. Agreed, it's good. Surprised they didn't add vocals to this as another bonus as well. 09. The Prophet's Song ["finished" extended version - if Brian remembers what he had planned with the song] Referenced in...? 13. You Take My Breath Away [Hyde Park 1976] How about from Earl's Court (minus the cymbal crash). My wife's favorite live track....minus the cymbal crash. 15. Somebody To Love [album version with the new "rock" ending] Such as from the Q+AL tour? It's almost sacrilege to touch this tune. 02. We Will Rock You [fast / Hammersmith Odeon 1979] Or just the BBC version for those who don't have it. 08. A Hard Life [extended version] the only extended version I would include 13. Stop All The Fighting [Freddie / Brian version] Not aware of this before. Any help/sources? 18. We Are The Champions / God Save The Queen [Knebworth Park 86] Gotta include WWRY (deleting FWBF). Hadn't thought of this before, yet it's so obvious. CD 4 01. Princess of the Universe [film version with Sean Connery intro] Throw in 'Gimme The Prize'...minus the movie dialogue and sound effects 04. Khashoggi's Ship [demo version] I have not come across this one yet. Pittrek, I like your CD5 ideas. Throw in a remix of 'My Baby Does Me' (simply remove the drum machine, and a 70's version of 'Rain Must Fall' with piano. .6. Battle Scene 3:38 (Unreleased) (2014 Remaster Wasn't aware of this until today, and just heard it for the first time. Thanks. Best for an anthology. Sail away sweet sister ( Freddie vocal) This is still unavailable, correct? 2) Staying Power (backing rerecorded/updated) No synths! Just 'real' drums, guitar, bass, and PIANO!. 4) There Must Be More To Life Than This (Unheard Queen version with MJ) or this http://www.queenconcerts.com/queenzone/1399980.html 3) Man Made Paradise (Queen version) 4) Love Me Like There's No Tomorrow (Queen version) 3rd early version from the Solo Collection 7) Your Kind of Lover (Queen version) a bit of added drums (same sound mix) and a smidge of guitar.....an absolute slam dunk. I can only guess that this was considered for MIH, but the mood was too upbeat, or it lost out to 'I Was Born To Love You'. 8) Time (Queen version) The Great Pretender version sounds as if it's a Queen version. Did Brian originally assist with this, or is it wishful thinking? 9) Mr Bad Guy (Queen version) Nah....too personal It's So You (Queen version) absolutely...and keep it simple also add 'New York'.....repeat the beginning vocals at the end....ala 'I Me Mine'. Nothing else needs to be done. 10 She Blows Hot and Cold (Queen version) or just fade out the demo Almost forgot, ...yes to 'Let Me In Your Heart Again' and 'Love Kills'. Moving on, anything 'Barcelona' is off limits. It's already been done, and parts were less powerful than the original (sadly). Years ago, I would have loved to have heard Brian's guitar replacing Montserret's vocals. I've since gotten older and wiser (at times). Would dearly love to hear Freddie LVs on 'Let's Get Crazy', 'Man On Fire', and 'It's An Illusion'....if they do indeed exist. Also.....if they really wanted to 'play around', they could pull in Billy Squier and touch up the 'Lady With A Tenor Sax' demo, play around with the LV on 'Man From Manhattan', and sneak Adam into the mix (not in front, but as part of the mix) Oh, as for this and the 'anthology' All tracks remastered and mixed by C_Matt, including the old demos All videos enhanced by Chief Mouse, except the serpentine I've checked out some of their work lately, and I would agree. Keep Orbit locked in the woodshed. |

My wife's favorite live track....minus the cymbal crash. Both are terrific versions - we have the one from the first night of Earl's Court in much better quality than Hyde Park, so it's hard to compare fairly. The source for The Prophet's Song "Brian version" - link - if I understood them correctly, the album version is unfinished. |
*goodco* 09.11.2014 11:01 |
^ thanks for the link. I sometimes need direction amongst all that is out there. And, indeed, put that on our 'Forever' or the anthology. Apologies for not knowing the last speaker, but his bit about Brian's ...."imaginary tales....is a different world from what Freddie's bringing to the band..." tends to show an ignorance of the first three albums. Here's a couple to add to this 'album'...the 1975 USA KYA b-side versions of 'Lily of the Valley' and GSTQ. [apologies for my long previous post. First time I've ever used the editor...and most likely last] |

It pisses me off that they keep releasing unreleased tracks like LMIYHA, Feelings Feelings and the alternative version of Dreamers Ball one by one, instead of opening the archives and putting it all in a complete anthology box set, similar to the Freddie solo collection. Now fans need to collect the rare tracks from different sources and they are forced to guess year after year whatever they might have in the archives. I guess the point of this strategy is the aim to sell more and more, but it's having the exact opposite effect on me because I'm not going to buy another copy of Jazz or Queen Forever to get one alternative version (I rather just borrow the CD from a library and rip the lone new track); however, if they released a large, glorious anthology like the Freddie one, I would actually buy it. But it should have been released ten years ago - it's probably never going to happen. And if they keep on scattering individual unreleased songs on new stupid compilations, there will soon be nothing left for the anthology. This Queen Forever is a totally worthless product... I don't know how many times they want to sell the same songs over and over again. |
