90 mins program on next week, 11th November:- link Might be fun. Personally, I'm taking the missus to see Kylie at Newcastle arena. We've got 'Gold' tickets. I believe that gets me a lap dance or something off the tight bottomed Aussie lady or something. |

I suppose the only saving grace is that the title of the programme is pretty on the mark: it's 'nation' and 'favourite, not 'fans' and 'best', so we can pretty much guess the top ten, know we're not getting anything new, but be thankful the band are having a show dedicated to them on prime time tv, giving the new release some great exposure. |

10 quid on Brian saying he wrote Save Me about fucking badgers (if there are interviews in the show that is..) |

Can't see it being much better than the last time they did something similar about 15 years ago. |

we can't know for sure what the outcome will be...only safe bet is the winner will be whichever song Gerry called and voted for...55,000 times |

I guess this programme is well tied in with the release of Queen Forever. I would've got excited a few years ago but I won't be watching it. I don't care what the casual fans like, to be honest. It'll be a case of, pick any 10 tracks from GH 1 & 2, focused on the dodgy 80s period. I think I preferred it when Queen actually weren't cool :D |

70s Queen are the best... |

Is this the general opinion throughout the board that everyone prefers Queen from the 70's? I thought they got 10x better in the 80's. |

Dean_ wrote: Is this the general opinion throughout the board that everyone prefers Queen from the 70's? I thought they got 10x better in the 80's.I think in essence, yes it is. They were a very different 'beast' by the mid 80s so you could argue that it's unfair to compare, but it's only natural to do so. The 80s songs (especially the singles) were generally brilliant pop songs, but that isn't necessarily what a lot of die hard fans like about the band. As a rule, you can pick any album from the debut up to The Game and find very few 'fillers' or dud tracks. Even those that difffer in style, feel, intent etc.. still have a complexity, depth, true reativity and vision to them. From Hot Space onwards you can pick any album and find a few tracks that will generally be seen as 'below par' by a majority of golks here. To think that there was only approx 6 years between the recording of A Night At The Opera and Hot Space is frightening! |

Somebody to love is my fav Queen song, but the nation will of course choose Bohemian Rhapsody. Freddie wrote some awesome songs in the 70s. |

As far as I know, there's only been one 70's release on DVD/Blu ray (The Rainbow), and Freddie sounds fucking brilliant on that so I'm struggling to agree. Yes, Montreal is a brilliant vocal performance just the right side of the 80's divide for that argument!), and Budapest is pretty good (but not a patch on Rainbow), but Wenbley and Rio and Japan '82 are all pretty poor. |

cmsdrums wrote:The Queen VHS' releases throughout the years too. Each to there own man, I'm just not that keen on Freddie's takes on some of the stuff in the early days. It sounds to me as if he was still finding his voice, which latterly he did discover ways in which showcased his ability tremendously well. Wembley has a lot of energy, I know there is overdubs, but even then, I think the man put in a performance that holds up well against earlier performances. Queen's 20 minute set during Live Aid is applauded world wide, with many holding it as the greatest live performance of all time, can't really argue against it either. The studio work on The Miracle and Innuendo are in a different ball game too. Part of the reason why I hold him as the greatest ever, there aren't many singers who get better as the years go on, especially in a career spanning 20 years.Dean_ wrote:In the middle this thread is something referring to Freddie 'sounding better on 80's dvd and blu ray releases that's the 70's releases'. Well - an hour into the show and I'm pleasantly surprised. The music is being taken seriously and no sensationalism so far. Plenty of Brian and Roger interviews for each track too, and the odd snippet of rare footage and photos. It's actually almost like a mini documentary concentrating on the songs, rather than a list/talking heads piece. Good stuff!! |

You cannot be serious?! It's a blatant plug for the upcoming tour (extra tickest go on sale today....coincidence?) and the Forever album. The clues are in the ad breaks. Financed by QP no doubt and a great peak time filler for ITV |
Holly2003 11.11.2014 16:10 |
I don;t give a flying f**k about ad breaks lol! But of course they're doing it for promotional purposes. The point is the programme is much better than I expected it to be. |

Slightly gutted that I missed this now, after reading the comments made by people. I can't even find it anywhere online, even ITV player doesn't have it up at the moment. I'll be looking out for it, hopefully a recording will surface somewhere soon. |

Yeah...most fans either here or elsewhere consider '70's Queen quite a bit better than '80's Queen. I know *I* do. Having said *that*...I think the stuff they did in the '80's and especially late 80's/early 90's is quite a bit better than most give it credit for. As someone stated earlier...they were a "different beast" in the '80's. There wasn't one album that didn't have at *least* 3 great songs on it. I think the best stuff that they created in the '80's/'90's can stand toe-to-toe with most of the '70's output. |
