went to see slash+miles kennedy at the corn exchange in edinburgh a few years ago,,and thought what a great size place for such a big star to play in...nice athmosphere and even at the back of the hall you were still closish to the stage......brian may on the anthems tour at the festival hall was another....so i was wondering, who is the biggest star you have seen in a smallish venue...
Back in 2007 I won a trip to see the Genesis dress rehearsal for their stadium tour.
The full stadium stage was set up inside the expo hall of Brussels, and there were maybe a hundred people in the audience.
I was actually closer to the stage on their Helsinki concert, but it was definitely a smaller crowd in that rehearsal! :P
I stumbled in through the wrong door (because there were no signs), and ended up backstage to see the parked sports cars... I was thirsty after racing from the airport, and pinched a water bottle from the cafeteria... Nice memories all around.
Pretty much all of the concerts I have seen were in full-size arenas.....................I saw John Mellencamp at the Fox Theater (capacity of 5000 or so) in Detroit quite a while ago....
Small VENUE?
Sly Stone (waaaay past his prime) at club Zanzibar Santa Monica, his birthday party 2005? I think. Capacity 300. Unusual as he was mostly coherent on a 6 song set he played keys AND guitar. Also singing: George Clinton
Plenty other musicians were there
Stevie Wonder
2007 San Diego
HUMPHREYS bar & grill. Capacity. ..I dunno 3-400
Folding chairs.
Missed "WRITTEN IN THE STARS"
Queen walk of fame induction after party at CLUB IVAR in Hollywood. I was 2 weeks shy of 21. It's gnawed on my mind ever since. Steve Vai and Nuno Bettencourt played with BRI + ROG
Also seen Bernie Worrell at BOOTLEG BAR in los Angeles. Capacity 150-200 but I don't expect many ppl here to consider him a big star
Other than that. As long as we're including soundchecks....I've done live sound in intimate rehearsal spots for Great White, Colbie Caillat, John Legend (don't think he should be as successful as he is but eh), Limp Bizkit, Solomon Burke, Smashing pumpkins (new v not old) etc. And more 70's-80's cats.
That's always interesting. Kinda breaks the star struck mode however.
I witnessed Rob Zombie at the House Of Blues in Boston,MA during the summer of 2011 and he rocked the house. I'm not a big fan of his but he had the place packed to the rafters. He got up on the bar with a big light and walked the entire length of the bar during a guitar solo. Played for nearly 2 hours too. I don't know now big he is as a star compared to others but for his brand of rock and roll along with his band White Zombie and his remake of horror movies, he is doing aok. He was still performing in smaller venues earlier this year too, a friend of mine from facebook went and seen him for the sixth or seventh time in a place smaller than the House Of Blues in Boston, over in Providence RI, USA.
Malmsteen in 2007, less than 900 people.
Premiata Forneria Marconi. They are not a huge act, but still a living legend in the italian prog scene. They ended their set and had such a good time that without any announcement, started to play outside the venue about 10 mins after they ended their show. Played for (perhaps) 3 hours for less than 100 people. It was 2004 or 2005, Im not sure!
