BEST MOMENTS
1) Brian "They're gonna kill us!" 0:30
2) Touching Noses Greetings ( after 4:00)
WHAT IS THAT?
Last show of the tour in Auckland, New Zealand, the band were treated to a traditional Ngati Whatua Maori haka poroporoaki (farewell haka) after they left the stage. The experience ended with the traditional Hongi greeting (touching of noses).
Ngati Whatua's haka was performed by Eru Rarere-Wilton's group KaiHaka and supported by local stage technician crews Evitan and Kiwi Krew.
Ngati Whatua is a local Auckland tribe who work throughout Auckland advocating for environmentally sustainable practices, cultural heritage protection and the recognition and use of native biodiversity.
From Wikipedia...............
"A haka (plural is the same as singular: haka) is a traditional ancestral war cry, dance or challenge from the Maori people of New Zealand. It is a posture dance performed by a group, with vigorous movements and stamping of the feet with rhythmically shouted accompaniment.[1]
War haka were originally performed by warriors before a battle, proclaiming their strength and prowess in order to intimidate the opposition, but haka are also performed for various reasons: for welcoming distinguished guests, or to acknowledge great achievements, occasions or funerals, and kapa haka performance groups are very common in schools.
New Zealand sports teams practice of performing a haka before their international matches has made the dance more widely known around the world. This tradition began with the 1888–89 New Zealand Native football team tour and has been carried on by the New Zealand rugby team since 1905."
Check out our mighty All Black rugby team for one of the best examples, as they lay down the challenge to the opposing team right before kick-off!
