This might be a bit technical, but I hope somebody will be able to help me :-) On Christmas Eve 1975 Queen played in London, at the Hammersmith Odeon. This concert was broadcast simultaneously live on BBC TV (The Old Grey Whistle Test) and BBC Radio 1. The mixes 1) The TV mix - basically the sound captured by the TV cameras, correct? It's mono, and of course it's edited - the TV broadcast started with an introduction by Bob Harris and ended right after Queen's rock and roll medley. The TV broadcast was later edited in many different forms, probably the most famous is the "Rock Legends" edit, which misses the intro to Now I'm Here, every mentioning of Christmas and couple of short trims. What's the best source for this mix? I guess the best source for the edited version would be the Japanese "Christmas Eve At Hammersmith bootleg, correct? And what about the FULL version? (FULL = everything what was shown on TV). I know there are at least 2 versions of the TV broadcast circulating, both are from QTV, one has the timecode at the bottom and one at the top. What is the best source for this? For example the Snow bootleg has Jailhouse Rock in quality far superior than anything that I've heard before, any idea what could be the source of that? 2) BBC Radio 1 mix - the original radio mix. Stereo, with great backing vocals, but with weak drums. What is the best source for it? I have 2 versions - Westwood Radio 1 pre-FM CD, horribly edited with an annoying sound effect during Ogre Battle - A Very Special Christmas by Godfather, much more complete, but all mentions of Christmas are either simply cut out or lowered in the mix (like in Lap Of The Gods revisited). And it runs faster as the recording progresses. Is there anything better? Of course the best thing ever would be a great quality stereo recording of the 1975 broadcast, but does something like that exist? 3) The Swedish mix - my personal favourite with great sounding drums, but weak backing vocals. But again it's not complete. The There Ain't No Sanity Clause bootleg adds the missing songs from the Rare Live VHS and a great copy of the BBC radio mix, so this is probably the best & longest copy we're gonna get, correct? To explain why I'm doing this little "research" - as many of you know a few years ago I've created and shared a DVD of the full concert. After watching it yesterday after several years I'm pretty sure I can do it better. I'd like to do a DVD with 3 different audio tracks, each track would be different mix. Of course that's why I'd need a great sounding complete version of each mix. Can anybody point me in the correct direction? |

My favourite version is There Ain't No Sanity Clause. It has even better audio than the official Wembley and MK releases! |

Or you could just wait 12 months for it on DVD next Christmas. |

None of the three mixes above have the complete show (through Jailhouse Rock), so you may have to fill in the gaps with the other sources. But the idea sounds fab to me ! Much better than jumping sources from song to song. |

So basically to have the best sources I should - merge the Christmas Eve bootleg and one of the QTV broadcasts (which one?) to get the TV mix - merge the Westwood Radio One CD and A Very Special Christmas (and what else) to get the UK radio mix (even when it's not going to be 100% accurate) - merge Sanity Clause and one of the TV sources to get the Swedish radio mix (even when it's not going to be 100% accurate) Correct? |

Sanity Clause includes the already COMPLETE swedish mix, although it misses some speeches (example: White Queen) |

But not before they put out 1977/79 boxes .. ! |

I live for the day they remix Live at the Bowl so I can actually listen to the drums without feeling violated!! What have they done to the sound anyway? I'm thinking compression with too slow attack and an overdose of reverb on top of that. Makes the drums sound so sloppy. :( |

A mono feed was taken from the Front-Of-House live mix. This practice is still used nowadays by Queen. I've seen the media teams plugging into the patch bay in the Q+PR and Q+AL tours. 2) BBC Radio 1 mix - the original radio mix. Stereo, with great backing vocals, but with weak drums. This is not the 'original' radio mix, but a quick mix from the multitrack master made at the time, and usually taken from either BBC transcription LPs or CDs. 3) The Swedish mix - my personal favourite with great sounding drums, but weak backing vocals. But again it's not complete. The source of this '2005' mix is a mistery to me. I used to believe it was 2) remastered, but now I'm inclined to think it is a full remix from the multitrack masters. 4) The 2009 mix. Intended for the unreleased '35th Anniversary' edition of Live At The Hammersmith Odeon DVD. This is a new remix from the multitrack masters. I have to compare it with the 'swedish' mix. |

I have intentionally ignored the 2009 mix :-) But thanks for the info! Any idea what was broadcast on the radio live in 1975? |
