As the current legs of the tour come to an end, it's interesting to see how Adam Lambert had faired, compared to comments made by Paul Rodgers when the tour was announced. Rodgers was interviewed at the time that the Q&AL dates were announced and he said something along the lines of (and I'm paraphrasing here), that 'Lambert would find it difficult to cope with a tour of that length and shows of that size as he's not experienced, and would probably find it tough to cope with, both vocally and pressure wise. Looking back, whether you are a fan of Lambert or not, it can't be denied that vocally he has coped admirably with the schedule and hasn't really shown any 'wear and tear' despite the difficulty of the material, and he has also seemed to develop as a performer, and always seemed at ease in any interviews and other publicity for the tour. When compared to 'seasoned pro' Rodgers, who often struggled vocally with the Queen shows, and could be said to have showed difficulty handling the enormity of the situation towards the end when he fell out with Brian, I think Adam deserves some real credit! |

Adam has never missed a concert performance -- ever. And, as far as I can determine, he never missed a performance in his theater years (doing 7 shows, 6 days a week). The Q+AL tour is a relatively light schedule compared to his Glam Nation Tour -- which was over 100 shows, mostly 3 nights in a row, 1 night off, and all over the world. I think Paul just did not know much about Adam when he made that comment. Adam has been performing for 20+ years and is not some inexperienced kid. He also takes extremely good care of his voice and has very solid vocal technique so vocal stress and fatigue is pretty unlikely. |

Adam Lambert has developed as a performer, but the real test comes with his next tour with his own band. If he still is diddling with his band members/lead singers during the shows, we will know he hasn't learnt shit. |

I think he's done a great job, not a huge fan of his voice, preferred PR, however PR did have to do a number of tracks in different keys... Lambert has been a pro through this tour and I think he has grown into it well. I hope they now come to the UK and Europe to finish off before they settle back into retirement from the tour scene. |

I agree that he's developed quite some. In 2012 when I watched Q+AL, I LOL a lot at his stage performance - funny and sometimes not in a very good way. Now he's become much more comfortable sharing the stage with Brian and Roger. I remember the iHeartRadio performance being a great pleasant surprise! |

Back on topic: Comparing this tour to the first Q+AL tour we can find a lot of differences, all of them good: The first tour was more like Queen PLUS a hired gun. He was told when to speak, Brian and Roger were in full control of the songs etc Now it feels more like a band, Adam found his spot in the songs, he improvise in songs, change his vocal arrangements, he has been allowed to control certain parts of the songs too, Brian and Roger said that some elements on stage were suggested by Adam, etc etc... Many Queen fans (including me) will listen very carefully his next album and will take a look at his next solo tour not only to hear his new music (currently I dont like any of his solo albums) but also to know how he will use the experience he got from this tour. |

Brian said that Adam is the one who suggested the GOLD theme! Adam had a very successful debut tour in 2010 in 114 venues in the U.S., Asia, Oceania and Europe. He pretty much put the whole show together himself other than the choreography for the dancers that his lead dancer provided. We wondered back then if he was going to need vocal cord surgery after some of the outrageous notes he was hitting, but somehow he has been able to do the right things to prevent that. |

Yes, back on topic. QAL appeared on Australia Today (a national morning TV show in Australia) for an interview with Richard Wilkins and Adam was asked, quoting now, "Is this the gig of your life?" Listening closely to his answer I felt it was a dodge, instead of saying "Absolutely" or "Oh God Yes!" he instead had a somewhat muted "It's an honor." What does that mean? Well only he knows but he's bound to outgrow this. I mean, none of these songs did he write or make hits, and yet he mostly wins over all crowds. Despite having fun, which I believe is genuine, it must be tiresome to think "I have to go out there and win them over every night, because I'm not HIM." Therefore naturally he's keen to do his own music again. Had this QAL not happened I would not have tried Tresspassing which I love and know each song. I bought it at the Hammersmith show out of respect for Adam and the trials he's been through gaining acceptance from Queen fans. When QAL arrived in Japan at the airport they all 3 walked out together but as soon as the paps started clicking Roger immediately slid to Brian's side and they linked arms at the shoulder leaving Adam standing apart from them like a bastard child. WTF? Photos such as these look awkward. I'd like to see that behavior end. That's when you know you have a mutual thing and the barriers are down. If Brian and Roger can link arms with each other then they can add in Adam as well, afterall, he's making this tour possible so that once again Queen's songs fill the air. |

Adam knows he need to give both Brian and Roger the spotlight cause they are the ones risking a LOT. He knows that he is headlining Summersonic 2014 because of Queen and he is having a huge press coverage because of Queen. He may feel upset, jealous or whatever he wants but at the end of the day his reputation will not be hurt at all if things goes wrong, he can always keep his solo stuff as usual. Something Brian and Roger cant do at all if this tour were a failure. Now, if in the future they release an album with a combined effort from Adam, Roger and Brian and Bri and Rog still act like they did in the airport in Japan, now Im pretty sure Adam will be very, very upset cause Adam had already spent too much for Q+AL to be treated just like a side kick |

I wonder if the people taking the pictures were asking them to pose that way. Rather than being a bastard child, there have been people speculating that those guys might want to adopt Adam. Thanks Wintespelt for posting the video of the moment I was refering to. Watching it back, it's clearly there. That sudden detachment that screams out BUSINESS ARRANGEMENT!!! And there is Adam, ball cap pulled down low, dark sunglasses, arms locked to the side. Could you be any more inconspicuous? At least in Japan he was allowed to arrive with them, in Korea it did not happen. Later on during the Australian tour Brian shows us a selfie of him and Adam that is a lot more natural and I was glad to see that. Kind of made up for it. The ice bucket challenge might show the fun they are having. But I get it, British society and American society are different. Americans would have never done anything less than all link arms. But hey, British band, British ways. |

I read in a Lambert forum that he was doing some work for his solo album and that's why arrived later to Korea. |

Mere morals just do not realize how gifted and rare a vocalist AL is. This!!vvvv thumbsup.gif cassie Global Moderator, Vocal Virtuoso Love THE VOICE! Cassie weighed in on the WWTLF new high note? Cassie makes understanding music fun and interesting..... "Another stellar rendition. I know that many consider the iHeart version the gold standard, but I prefer how he has been singing it more recently (even tho I miss the D5 glory note he has eliminated at the end). Listening to the version tonight, these are some of the nuances I love. * He is singing the first verse with great delicacy. When he sings "what is this THING..." the word THING is on a G4, which is precisely where one of the natural breaks is in his range. (It is also the top note that most choral tenors can sing in full voice) In order to sing that G4 and insure that it doesn't crack, it is natural to use a little more push or oomph, which will make the note sound more powerful and strong as opposed to the light notes before it. But Adam does not add the power there. He lightly floats that G4 while still in chest voice. Most tenors who wanted to keep that note light and pure, would have had to switch to their head voices to do that, but Adam has such great control. Going on, "who wants to live forever, who wants to live forevER, ooooo" he starts light, then gradually builds in intensity as he moves up the scale to another G4. In the past, he has hit that final syllable in his powerful, ringing chest voice, finishing the build up. More recently, he has opted, instead to build, build, and then, surprise, caress that final syllable G4. Difficult to do, but an interesting interpretation. Instead of being "angry" about living forEVER, it sounds pensive and a bit melancholy. You will notice that on the second verse, he starts with the same delicate voice, but this time, he lets it build to the G4s on "ONLY" and "FOREVER", singing them with the strength and emphasis we are accustomed to. As an interpretation, this works to build the song's arc, and also the convey the singer's change from pensiveness to frustration and a little anger. * Recently, Adam has been adding an almost operatic little ornamentation or flourish on the word "us" in "It's all decided for US." This rendition was the most embellished. Not sure why he has decided to add that recently, but it thrills me to hear it. And, yes, that is partly because it is very difficult to sing accurately because it moves between notes so quickly and the notes are so close together. A lesser singer would slur the notes or make them sound muddy. Not Adam. * The "new high note"? I think you are talking about the D5 right before "when love must die!" He has been sneaking that one in recently, but this time he hit it and sustained it, even breaking the rhythm of the song to hold onto it a bit longer than fits into the beat. The musicians are very in tune with him, and hold off playing the subsequent down beat until he finishes "showing off." But, as per usual, Adam "shows off" at the right time, for the right interpretive reasons that enhance the song. Many "show offs" insert glory notes and riffs with no rhyme or reason, just because they can, which irritates me. In my world, everything needs to be in service to the song's meaning and intent, not the singer's ego. While we are talking about D5s, people gasp whenever Adam hits fifth octave notes, which he does with great frequency. Why? Because they are pretty much impossible for most male singers to hit, not to mention sustain with richness and power, and in full voice. Yes, a lot of guys sing fifth octave notes ---- in falsetto. Easy peasy. Full voice, pleasing, powerful, and matching the other parts of their range? Nope. Almost NONE. I am not just talking about untrained male singers here. I am talking about classically trained tenors. They would just about kill to be able to have any notes reliably in their repertoire that end in a "5". A C5, the first of the fifth octave notes, is considered the benchmark for excellence in an elite tenor soloist. The rest of the fifth octave, is almost never even written into the opera repertoire, it is so rare to have someone able to sing it in full voice. And, if you are wondering, those fifth octave notes are difficult for untrained FEMALE singers to hit, too. Those are the huge belting notes that the divas hit, that also doom their voices to injury and destruction later in their careers. Trained female singers switch to head voice for the fifth octave, even sopranos. (Of course, Adam can sing well into the fifth octave in head voice, too. Not only does he have a black woman inside him somewhere, he also has an operatic mezzo soprano!) In all fairness, to prove my objectivity (hahaha) the last D5 he hit in this rendition was a bit flat. j/s. He is only, tho' just barely, human. * Finally, I like the little extra pause he added to "who waits forever..........anyway." Like an afterthought. You know, how you add, "whatever" or "anyway" when you maybe got a little too personal or deep and there is this slight awkwardness in the conversation? Yeah, that". Read more: link Barb...thank you so much for bringing this in...due to good old RL...have had to come and go here mainly as a lurker......and hate that!.... haha.gif anyway, i'm really sad that this is the end of QAL...ik adam needs to go on and "break free"......but the symbiotic truism of this collab...well, it is pretty damn phenomenal!.....really hoping that Europe and whatever....(but definitely So America......they so deserve a touch of QAL) happen next year..... thumbsup.gif |
