Currently watching Queen: Live in Milton Keynes on Sky Arts 1 at the moment and was surprised that it's a completely different mix compared to Queen: On Fire (Live at the Bowl). Additional keyboards, John's bass seems to come through with a bit more warmth and Roger's drums seem to sound better. On the visual side of things it seems to comprise of different angles and pre show footage that I don't recall seeing on the official DVD release Actually prefer this sound mix to the more mainstream one although a drawback is the Sky Arts concert has been cut to one hour (less advert breaks). Is this news to anybody else? |

if Fat Bottomed Girls was included: does Freddie's voice crack on "in this locality"? |

AB-88 wrote: Actually prefer this sound mix to the more mainstream one....That's SO funny. The irony is that what you've most likely watched is the one hour edit of the Ch4 broadcast from 1982 that TV stations have paraded out every year since Freddie died and for those of us old enough to have been around at the time, that one hour edit IS the 'mainstream' one! So. Not news at all to most of us. I suspect that you're young and only quite recently getting into the world of "Queen", in which case, "Welcome aboard!" :) |

You're correct about me being relatively young (I'm 26) but found Queen when I was about 8. Began with the Greatest Hits albums and then bought the individual albums before diving into the treasure troves online for unreleased material, multitracks, bootlegs etc. I follow these forums pretty closely and contribute now and again. I'll stop short of going into detail as to how much Queen material / memorabilia I've collected since I began but I'd describe myself as an avid follower of Queen but it concerns me to say that this particular recording has (until now) eluded my attention. |
luthorn 17.08.2014 17:53 |
Yeah, with Queen you will always find a marvel here, there and again in many of their concerts. Keep the Bootleg Alive! |

I agree, the TV cut is MUCH MUCH better. Especially the drum sound, they completely ruined it on the official mix. Did you record it? Even the best copies out there are from VHS, many of them are mono. A new digital recording would be a great thing |
The Real Wizard 18.08.2014 01:03 |
This is the only official Queen live album I haven't listened to from beginning to end. The snare sound is awful with all that needlessly added compression. How they got Rocks Montreal so right and this so wrong is beyond me. The original MTV mix eats it for breakfast. Speaking of which - has anyone done an audio rip of this particular version? I'd love to have a copy. |
The Real Wizard 18.08.2014 01:22 |

I'd love to have a copy. When this was first shown on MTV, I taped it off of the cable stereo simulcast they used to do with MTV (this was way before stereo TV's and broadcasts!). It was hissy and compressed, but man, did I love that tape! I wore it out to the point that it wouldn't play any more without phasing. When the official release came out, I was really looking forward to the full show, but was also disappointed with the mix. I still love that show, so I listen to it anyway, but it just doesn't have the punch of that old tape. Also, I remember Brian being really off key in the a cappella FBG intro, which was fixed on the official release! :-) |

I don't like the sound of At The Bowl, neither Live At Wembley. But after that, the live sound of Queen Productions is amazing, Montreal, Budapest, the extra live tracks for the remasters and now Rainbow. I wonder if they will remix Wembley and MK Bowl to equal the standard of the other releases. (What am i saying???, Houston, Houston!) |
AB-88 18.08.2014 12:09 |
I did record it as it was broadcast - not sure if it'll be much of an upgrade to what's already available though. I have no immediate way of capturing the audio from the Sky Box digitally. |
AB-88 18.08.2014 12:14 |
I see it's being repeated on Sky Arts 1 HD (UK)... "Queen: Live In Milton Keynes" - Thursday 21st Aug @ 12:30PM and Friday 22 Aug @ 7:30PM. Maybe someone on here is better equipped to capture the audio. |
Supersonic_Man89 18.08.2014 13:12 |
I don't know how they fix the audio on FBG, can somebody tell me? |
cmsdrums 18.08.2014 14:30 |
Another voice here to add to the consensus that the drums are ruined on the official Bowl release, and, echoing the above comments, it's baffling as to why when Montreal sounds so good. I have got a VHS of the original Tube broadcast - must dig it out and see if it's still playable enough to rip the audio from..... |
The Real Wizard 18.08.2014 16:27 |
Supersonic_Man89 wrote: I don't know how they fix the audio on FBG, can somebody tell me?Easy. If you record each track separately (vocal, guitar, piano, snare, etc), you can edit any one of them to your liking. So therefore it's easy to replace a vocal line from a different show, or even tweak it in the studio. Common practice for live albums since the 70s. |
99jaystang 18.08.2014 17:42 |
You would think they took that vocal patch of Fat bottom girls from the plenty of live recordings (south america 81?) (japan 82), (or live killer tapes 79). |

So, is the mix their using on the broadcast the original stereo mix made for the MTV broadcast back in the '80s; or something newer? At any rate, I'd love to hear it. Hopefully, someone will record the audio, if not the video as well and share some samples with us. |
Woody43 19.08.2014 04:16 |
The mix is probably the orignal 1982 mix, I seem to remember that the broadcast sound was completed by the engineers for The Tube on UK Channel 4 at the time. No real involvement from QPL in the mix - IIRC there was something in a fan club mag stating that Roger was very impressed with the broadcast version. I agree the original sound is vastly superior to the DVD, which is disappointing as that gig is a great record of the band at their peak. |
Holly2003 19.08.2014 06:36 |
Never liked the guitar sound on Tne Tube broadcast. Always seemed to have too much treble and was a little "swooshy" :) |

On Bowl was still an awesome release because of Back Chat and Action This Day. Would love to hear those songs in the old mix. Keep on dreaming, I guess. |

Another old thread I know. Was there actually ever a stereo TV broadcast of Milton Keynes? I recorded what I think is the most recent 51 minute version shown in the UK in 1992, and it is in mono. Although nicam was up and running, not everything was broadcast in stereo, otherwise my copy would be. |

That whole show, despite Freddie's voice in some spots is really underrated. The fast WWRY from this show is tops too as well as Dragon Attack, Save Me, Fat Bottomed Girls, CLTL, and AOBtD. |

I'm sure I read on another thread the Sky Arts broadcast was in mono, but hey ho. The 78 minute TV broadcast in 1982 at least contained a little extra pre-concert footage. |

Does anyone know which song didn't have the snare (or was it the kick) that was missing on the multitrack? Guess they added samples to this song - whichever it was. |

But as far as I can recall, it's the same awful drum sound throughout the show - the triggering on the snare that sounds nothing like Roger's snare at the time (or ever). It should be Queen's best 80s live album, but this puts it into second or third place. |

^^ It also annoys me how they took down the keyboards so that they're mostly inaudible. |
