I've heard "Another One Bites the Dust" hundreds of times. Recently, I was listening to a CD-quality rip of the song with some really nice headphones (Sennheiser HD 380). I picked up a subtle sound that I've never heard before, and for the life of me, I can't figure out what's producing this sound.
In the first 15 seconds of the song, I can distinctively hear three instruments: the bass guitar, the drums, and then a third, unidentifiable sound. It's sort of hard to describe. It matches the beat of the song and is very consistent. It sounds almost like a very faint whistling sound ... or perhaps a squeaky bed ... or, maybe like a rusty pair of scissors that are opening and closing... or maybe a hinge. I think this sound is alternating between two volumes, one higher than the other. I am absolutely positive I hear something though.
I hear it -- albeit not as frequently -- at the beginning of "Dancer" off of Hot Space. In "Dancer', I hear it at 0:01 into the song, 0:03 into the song and 0:06 into the song. I also hear it in "Staying Power", at 0:01 in the song and 0:06 into the song. These sounds repeat periodically throughout both songs, but not nearly as consistent as when I hear it in "Another One Bites the Dust".
Not sure if this makes a difference, but this is from the remastered reissue from 2011. Also, I cannot hear these sounds on YouTube versions of the song. My belief is that this sound is so subtle that is compressed out on lower-quality rips of the song, such as standard definition YouTube streams. These are the only songs I've noticed it on.
Being that they're all 80's albums, I'm wondering if this is some sort of synthetic sound that the band pumped in in post-production. It's possible that this could be some sort of instrument feedback that I"m hearing as well. I'd be grateful if anyone could help identify this sound, it's driving me crazy, but I'm absolutely certain it's there!
The song have many effects like piano/cymbals/guitar noises recorded at different speeds, backwards etc, basically studio production.
Also, if you are not listening an original source (file from itunes, cd, etc) it is possible that you just hear something extra that someone added (like those remixes lots of fans do) or just a bad rip.

I don't think I ripped it wrong, because what I hear is too consistent. It sounds deliberate. I'm curious, if you listen to the songs (in particular, "Another One BItes the Dust"), can you hear what I'm talking about?

I swear I'm not trying to jerk anyone's chain!
I finally realized what was going on though. The reason I was hearing this only when I played it through my media player and not through YouTube streams wasn't due to compression, but instead due to the fact that -- brace yourselves for the stupidity -- my equalizer was turned on in the media player. I guess this was responsible for revealing these "mysterious" sounds. This is what my equalizer looked like, if anyone wants to tune theirs and see if they hear the same thing I was. link
Sorry, folks, I feel pretty stupid! Sincerely was not trying to waste anyone's time, just an honest (but silly) mistake.
