We already have one like this, but it died, so here is a new one! |
baxter1999 15.07.2014 12:58 |
Here is mine... Best 1. Bohemian Rhapsody 2. Somebody to Love 3. Under Pressure (possibly the only good thing to come out of Hot Space) 4. I Want to Break Free 5. Bicycle Race 6. Fat Bottomed Girls 7. We Will Rock You 8. We Are the Champions 9. You're My Best Friend 10. No One But You (Despite the Absence of Freddie) Worst 1. Delilah 2. I'm In Love With My Car 3. Back Chat 4. Jesus 5. Dancer 6. Teo Torriatte 7. Don't Try Suicide 8. All God's People 9. Get Down Make Love 10. Body Language |
Caviar and Cigarettes 15.07.2014 14:28 |
Best 1. Bohemian Rhapsody: Just pure greatness. Nothing more. 2. The Show Must Go On: So amazing,Especially the guitar solos. 3. Somebody To Love: Very pretty and beautiful. I especially like how the song has 2 false endings. 4.Under Pressure: Best of Hot Space, the high note in the middle...Just wow. 5.Bicycle Race:Always a favorite, very catchy, like the bike bell solo. 6.Radio Ga Ga: Just very nice, the synths sound very cool! 7 Your'e My Best Friend: Just very good. 8: I Want To Break Free: Nothing to say. 9.We Will Rock You and We Will Rock You (Fast):Love this, especially the fast version. Live versions good too!. 10:I Want It All:Just so rockin'. honorable mentions:Fat Bottomed Girls,Killer Queen,No One But You. Worst 1.Delilah:The lyrics are sweet and so cute(It's about a cat),but this song sucks. 2.Get Down Make Love:Especially the middle. 3.Body Language:just so bad. 4.My Baby Does Me:Crap,Crap,Crap. 5.Staying Power:Just some cheesy disco. It might have worked for the Bee Gees, but they ain't queen. 6.Action This Day:crap, the lyrics in Roger's parts are too quiet. 7.Don't Try Suicide:Even though it's anti-suicide,the melody is utter crapola. 8.I'm In Love With My Car:Hate it. 9:Dancer:More Crap. 10:Back Chat:Crap. |
malicedoom 15.07.2014 14:54 |
I just popped in to defend My Baby Does Me. Sorry, I like it. |
Holly2003 15.07.2014 15:33 |
2. I'm In Love With My Car 3. Back Chat 4. Jesus 6. Teo Torriatte Just happen to be four of my favourite Queen songs. IILWMC has awful lyrics but has a great rhythm and gnarly guitar. Back Chat has one of Brian;s best solos -- very sharp and tight. Jesus resolves into one of Queen's heaviest instrumental sections. Teo is beautiful from start to finish. |
Stelios 15.07.2014 16:19 |
(off-topic)My Baby Does Me is not a filler. Its a "breather" as Freddie quoted it in "Queen for an hour". It does indeed provide some space to the album. Used to like it. Nowdays it just... passes by. Guess it didnt age that well. |
MadTheSwine73 15.07.2014 16:37 |
My top 10, in no particular order: Father To Son Innuendo It's Late Life is Real A Winter's Tale Somebody to Love Bohemian Rhapsody The Show Must Go On Was It All Worth It My Melancholy Blues My "worst 10", in no particular order. Don't Lose Your Head Gimme The Prize Pain Is So Close To Pleasure More of That Jazz Dancer Rain Must Fall Delilah My Baby Does Me Cool Cat Fight From The Inside However, Don't Lose Your Head is the only song there that I actually dislike. All the others I don't really mind, but I don't think I've ever finished listening to Don't Lose Your Head. |

baxter1999 wrote: Worst 2. I'm In Love With My Car 6. Teo TorriatteGenuinely surprised to see these excellent tracks on a shit-list. But again, we've seen people prefer The Works and A Kind Of Magic to Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack. Bizarre. It'd be like saying What Goes On is better than All My Loving. As for the original question - the best ten Queen tracks are on any Greatest Hits compilation. Anything to the contrary is fan worship borne out of over-listening to the hits. Killer Queen, BoRhap, Somebody To Love, Rock You, Champions, Don't Stop Me Now, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Under Pressure, and The Show Must Go On are indisputable, plus a wild card of your choice. I'll pick Innuendo. Of course there are superb album tracks, but it's the hits that made Queen who they are. And, for the record, most of them were written by Mercury. |

I know many people like/love Sleeping on the sidewalk. I don't like the way it is recorded, it sounds messy, would fit better on the Jazz album. Also the lyrics...something about a trumpet... Brian sings like he will record his voice later again, but then better. |
Holly2003 16.07.2014 03:15 |
Probably be helpful if you read the lyrics. It's about a musician, not a trumpet. He is down on his luck, then is discovered by a record company, then his music goes out of fashion again and he becomes disillusioned by the music business and maybe also with being a musician. It's autobiographical in some respects. It also has a great blues vibe and cool solo, which shows Brian can play spontaneously in contrast to his usual structured compositions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- KJ wrote: I know many people like/love Sleeping on the sidewalk. I think is said this somewhere before: if you took ALL of the Mercury compositions from the first 3 albums - you have in essence the perfect rock album. |

6. Coming Soon 7. Fun It 8. Sleeping on the Sidewalk 9. Leaving Home Aint Easy 10. Seaside Rendezvous 8, 9 & 10 are three of my favourite Queen songs and the other two I would rate as good album tracks, if nothing special. 2. Fun it 3. A human body 4. Who wants to live forever 5. She makes me 10. Drowse IMO 4 & 10 are among the best tracks Queen have produced, 3 is a really good b-side that is better than much of the filler album materal Queen produced in the 1980s, and the others are 2 & 5 are fine album tracks. So the moral of this is .. there's no accountng for personal taste in music, so these best and worst lists are mainly pointless. |

i don't understand how that many people dislike a song like "dancer". it's superb! of course you cannot compare it with all those early beauties. and there's nothing like a "queen II" ! but the song itself -in spite of the context of its release (hot space, that is)- stands out for being a very well done experiment in the dance genre. i like to play it every now and then. it's fun. and i think it's more listenable and less conservative (!) than pop songs like "i want to break free" which i rather title... well, kind of boring. by todays standards... ...or radio ga ga. loved it back then... but cannot stand it anymore... environmentally played to death! every time i want to clap hands, i listen to tom waits... :-) same to WWRY. yes nice treatments. but same old, same old. (except maybe for roger's interpretations 94/98. wish they would do something similar in their queen shows t'day!) WATC. what a beautiful song originally. but i hardly can stand it listening from beginning till the end. cannot talk about a concrete "worst song" list.. because there's so many originally beautiful songs of them that were played to death... so i'll continue with a list which features the most beautiful, and imho. timeless songs (and most played by me) of their repertoire... 1. white queen (with piano of course) 2. millionaire waltz ("how we danced and played"... woooohaaaa!) 3. good company (nice treatment!) 4. hard life (as a crowning glory of the pop-era of queen's) 5. march of the black queen (who doesn't love THAT original version of BoRhap ? :-) 6. tenement funster (for offering a personal view of roger's!) 7. my fairy king 8. great king rat 9. scandal 12'' (another well done pop treatment!) 10. seaside rendezvous (dude... !) (xx. warboys (! i really like it !) the samples in between make me shiver from time to time! ) (of course... this is a spontaneous list. may alter here and there by the ages of time :-) worst... hum. at least not played by me: everything on flash gordon (you may chose yourself). except for "the kiss"(rules big time!) and "football...something". don't get me wrong... it may be good music. but not casual listenable. is it ? furthermore most of "hot space"... c'mon... the money for the studio rent wasn't really worth their output in the early 80s, was it? not my favourite queen-era as you may notice. on the other side... "the song for lennon" was great... and "put out the fire" would have been a great song if it had gotten a royal treatment... "back chat"... *wrrrr*. no thanks. "action this day". i wish it had some serious action. "staying power". not staying forever... but as i said... "dancer"... welcome occasionally. funny little thing. and the sample never gets boring :-) |

Well innuendo and made in heaven have a very dark morbid atmosphere to them. Hot space is fun and Freddie is enjoying fiddling around with styles and tempos, dragging Brian, John, and Roger along for the ride, and i love it when Queen start getting out of there comfort zones. Innuendo they had lost the plot by the time this got released and they seemed to be in a rut thinking oh" we will add a few rock songs on and play safe as Hot Space didnt work, but to be honest with the exception of " Headlong" the rest of the album was not as high class as we know Queen can be with songs. Made in Heaven was dark, and you could tell that death was lingering around especially on Mother love which i never play as its too upsetting. infact i dont even touch the Made in Heaven cd anymore. I love Queen2 and ANATO & NOTW! |

Songs like Heaven For Everyone, It's A Beautiful Day, A Winter's Tale, TMLWKY are anything but dark imo. |
gerry 18.07.2014 11:40 |
well i mean fancy including "too much love will kill you" when it had killed freddie! A winters tale was freddies last time to look over at the lake geneva before passing away, it was a very very sad album in my opinion. |

Gerry - the song is Brian's song with brian's guitar and brian's synth-bass playing and even if you disagree with me - the simplest of google searches prove that YOU are wrong |

brENsKi 18.07.2014 12:10 |
gerry wrote: Well if i am wrong i appologise but what was john Deacon playing on this track then?NOTHING!!!!! the same way as on other occasions one (or more) band members did not play on individual tracks. being a group does NOT mean everyone plays on EVERY track, and certainly NOT always their own instruments some examples: Staying Power - john played lead guitar Hot space - lots of synths and syndrums (replacing real drums) The Works - fred mandel some piano & synth as did Mack. AKOM (album) Joan Armatrading lead vocals on DLYH and Spike played some synths Innuendo - Steve Howe lead spanish guitar part then there's the lead/backing vocals switchovers between Brian & Freddie on songs like Fat Bottomed Girls John played piano (electric) on YMBF most of Good Company was Brian this is just the "off the top of the head stuff" |

10 Best (In no real order): White Man. Let Me Entertain You. The Prophet's Song. Fight From The Inside (Well I like it lol) Get Down Make Love (Well I like that too lol....as the live versions from '79 to '82 are really cool)). Keep Yourself Alive. '39. Another One Bites The Dust (Any S.A '81 Versions). Don't Try So Hard. Nevermore. 10 Not so Best lol (Again in no real order): Bo Rhap (Ok, go on, hate me lol. Never been a fan, and has been killed to death on T.V & Radio over the years.) See What I Fool I've Been. Pain Is So Close To Pleasure (Yuk!). Man On The Prowl. Rain Must Fall (Not my kinda thing). Friends Will Be Friends. Sweet Lady. My Life Have Been Saved (Not a fan of both versions). Who Needs You. Delilah. Shame is wasn't a top 20 of both as both were hard to do, as I would add to the best: STL. TSMGO......and more to boot :-) |

Brenski " joan armatrading sang backing vocals on "Dont loose your head" Freddie was lead vocalist on that track! |

gerry wrote: Brenski " joan armatrading sang backing vocals on "Dont loose your head" Freddie was lead vocalist on that track!sorry, my slip - but that was from memory. and that's all you can pick out of that list i provided- so that's not bad then. - esp once you consider that you set yourself up as some kind of superfan - yet you didn't know the difference between a real bass and a synth from the 80s? and worse still...you thought it was actually Deacy playing the bass on "Dancer" - you described it as a "good Deacy bassline" - which indicated you really know very little about his playing style |
gerry 19.07.2014 05:10 |
Even the most loyal knowledgeable Queen fan makes mistakes, even you! so yes i was very surprised that the bass line on "Dancer" was a synth! It does sound so similar to what john would do. Its in his tempo of style too, like "Another one bites the dust" Quite surprised you said Deacy played guitar on "Staying power" though! |
brENsKi 19.07.2014 06:10 |
you see, I really like hip hop, soul and even some funk...but the reason I like it is that the dance music of the time was actually quite genuine, lots of real dirty bass hooks, twin turntables and great voices. Grandmaster Flash, Gary Bird, Chic etc. What Queen did primarily on Hot Space was destroy the sound and bury it in a muddy mix of synths and syndrums...for me - apart from Freddie's vocals - there's little to like about Hot Space |

Top 10: - Bohemian Rhapsody - 'Die hard fans' of Queen seem to like complaining that this is overplayed, or overshadows the rest of their work. Truly, though, I can't think of anything better for Queen to be known by - Bo Rhap is a perfect representation of what they were about in their prime. - White Queen - Especially the live interpretation with the duetting piano and electric guitar. I would say without hesitation that Freddie's vocal performance at the March Rainbow show is superior to the album vocal, too. - Killer Queen - Save Me - '39 - The Prophet's Song - I'd be claiming this as my magnum opus if I were Brian. It's let down only slightly by the vocal cannon lasting too long. - Drowse - Seriously sublime work by Roger. - Teo Torriatte - the HD mix is beautiful. - Radio Ga Ga - it isn't classic Queen, but it has such a terrific atmosphere and sentimental feeling to it. - It's Late These ten are completely timeless to me, while my interest will shift around outside of this. Things like Dreamer's Ball, Spread Your Wings, Liar, Fairy Feller/Nevermore and Good Company are all amazing, but don't have the same enduring meaning to me personally as the ten above. Bottom 10: - Fun It - It's a fun listen, but just unimpressive. Freddie and Roger sharing lead vocals is a unique quality that makes it worth checking out, anyway. - White Man - Meh. This has nothing that can't be found in the much more powerful Prophet's Song. - Sweet Lady - I really don't think this is as bad as it's made out to be, it's just an okay rock song surrounded by excellent, genre-defying material. - Who Needs You - It's a pleasant enough song, just forgettable. Sorry John :( - Body Language - Tear It Up - Is This the World We Created? - The moving vocal makes me want to forgive this one, but the lyrics are much too hamfisted. - Man on the Prowl - Discount Crazy Little Thing Called Love. - Delilah - Certainly not Freddie's best. - Don't Lose Your Head I went to write Pain is so Close to Pleasure and My Baby Does Me on my bottom 10, but then realised I don't even remember what they sound like, so it wouldn't be a fair call. |

There is no way I can narrow it down to just 10. Man, that's just hard. I generally nearly love everything Queen with a couple tracks here and there like Jesus and Body Language being the exception. Queen Songs of the month for me are.. Don't Stop Me Now, Nevermore, 39', and Too Much Love Will Kill You. |

Tough choice! At the moment I'm thinking these, but really changes every day. Best: My Fairy King Modern Times RNR Seven Seas Of Rhye Fairy Feller / Nevermore Brighton Rock (Especially Live Killers) Drowse Sheer Heart Attack Coming Soon Princes Of The Universe Not Best: My Baby Does Me Stealin' Is This The World We Created (Harsh) Misfire You Take My Breath Away (but that might be down more to it's prominent positioning on the album) Don't Lose Your Head (but I love A Dozen Red Roses..) Who Wants To Live Forever (the only version I liked was the Adam Lambert live '12 version Now I'm Here Don't Try Suicide Bijou |

I saw Tenement Funster in a worst list here. Just... no. |
PrimeJiveUSA 22.09.2014 11:23 |
Day drop...there have been quite a few others making it on people's "worst" list that stir that same reaction. Oh well, too each their own. |
Khizzy 22.09.2014 15:18 |
My favourites (not in any order): Long Away The Hero These Are The Days Of Our Lives Flick Of The Wrist The Night Comes Down Spread Your Wings Hijack My Heart White Queen The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke March Of The Black Queen Songs I really don't like at all: White Man Don't Try Suicide Delilah Sleeping On The Sidewalk Love Of My Life (studio version only - live version is good) The Loser In The End Tear It Up Man On The Prowl Is This The World We Created? I Want To Break Free A handful of songs missed out on the "best" list - Father To Son, We Are The Champions and Jealousy. It would have been a lot easier to make a top 20 list! |
PrimeJiveUSA 22.09.2014 17:02 |
It seems that "I Want To Break Free" has become increasingly unpopular with many Queen fans. It seemed that in the past it was always cited as one of their *best* '80's songs and on this thread it's appearing on quite a lot of *worst* lists. |
brENsKi 22.09.2014 17:20 |
^^^ yeah it does seem to be one of those that doesn't "feel the love" these days. i'm wondering if it's down to a couple of simple facts: 1. the whole "sound" has aged badly 2. it's one of those songs that has nothing exciting about it - therefore when you hear it you never hear anything "new" in it - ie any facet that you'd forgotten about |
dysan 23.09.2014 02:23 |
It's true - I never listen to the Hits at all, but odd that a few are actively picked as disliked. Khizzy's lists are awesome. |

tomchristie22 wrote: Top 10: - Bohemian Rhapsody - 'Die hard fans' of Queen seem to like complaining that this is overplayedI would fall in to this category. It is a beautiful song that represents Queen, but there are just so many people I've met that know nothing of Queen outside of this song and a couple others, like Rock You and Another One Bites the Dust. Personally none of those are on my top 10, but I like them all. I guess I just have an underdog complex, and if one song is overshadowing other truly great songs then that song goes down a couple notched. Not Bohemians fault, but it's not something I can help either. |
tomchristie22 23.09.2014 07:57 |
That's fair enough. I guess my point was that it's a good thing at least we have something like Bo Rhap as their most famous song, something which represents them at their peak much better than Rock You or Bites the Dust. |

Best: 1. The Show Must Go On 2. Bohemian Rhapsody 3. Somebody To Love 4. Innuendo 5. Who Wants To Live Forever 6. These Are The Days of Our Lives 7. Save Me 8. Radio Ga Ga 9. Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy 10. You Take My Breath Away Honourable mentions: Jealousy, Killer Queen, Under Pressure, Play The Game, Another One Bites The Dust, I Want It All, Don't Stop Me Now (I know some people hate it). Worst: 1. Staying Power 2. Don't Try Suicide 3. Calling All Girls 4. Fun It 5. The Invisible Man 6. My Baby Does Me 7. Delilah 8. Body Language 9. Tie Your Mother Down (it's ok live) 10. Coming Soon |
dysan 24.09.2014 08:56 |
Worth pointing out that some of the archival released renewed my interest in some of the more obvious good tunes - Hearing Brian going through the multitracks of BoRap was like hearing it again. Same with the 'guitar' version of DSMN released on 2011's Jazz. |
