I've often wondered when it gets near the end of the song and they do that god awful sounding scratching or manipulating the guitar or whatever it is if that was done on purpose to purposely sound obnoxious? I've often heard the song was a response to the punk movement at the time and I know they was recording News of the World in the same studios that the Sex Pistols were recording in at the time. I've always been curious about it. I've often turned the song down or just skipped to the next track cuz I can't stand that noise... |

I never quite like the song, too loud, too heavy, the sound yes irritated me as well and the abrupt ending of it. Not my favourite track. |

Just my opinion of course, but being 'just 17' at the time it was released, I loved it all. I recall not getting past the first 3 tracks of the LP and just picking up the needle and starting all again. What I loved at the time and still do, was the manic ferociousness of the song. Given that reckless energy, the howling guitar solo seemed just right to me. I struggle though to recall a live rendition where Brian replicated it, although it may be out there somewhere. Good memories for me. |

Get off my lawn ... I was just 15 when I heard that arrhythmia feedback and it blew me away & I still love it. Unfortunately Brian never seems to manage more than two seconds of guitar feedback live as far as I know. |

To heavy get a grip man,its a bloody fantastic piece of metal ! I suppose you dont like Tie Your Mother Down and other great rock tracks.Maybe you prefer more mainsteam music ! |

pittrek wrote:That is purely a matter of taste. A meaningless flood of distortion and feedback can be very heavy, but it's not necessarily great. I personally like rock music, but I f*cking HATE the volume at concerts, which is not just sufficient to shatter eardrums and vaporize buildings at 300 yards, but totally ruins the music by turning it into an undifferentiated wash of broadband noise.dave76 wrote: I never quite like the song, too loud, too heavy, the sound yes irritated me as well and the abrupt ending of it. Not to. 2) It's debatable at the least to call SHA metal. 3) TYMD is completely mainstream rock. 4) Going apeshit on someone for disliking a song is utterly pathetic. |

It's ok thomas. Thanks. I like TYMD by the way. But this is the way QZ has become. |
thomasquinn 32989 12.07.2014 05:22 |
QZ might've become like this, but that doesn't mean I'm going to stop calling crap crap. TYMD seems to be the one Queen-song hardly anyone who isn't a fan knows, but almost everyone enjoys. |

I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't stand that noise. |

Its feedback |

Should do it on this tour |

I actually prefer the song live (the live version from Paris 79 on the News of the world 2011 remaster is epic) for 2 reasons. One, because of the distorted guitar on the album version and 2, because I don't like the vocals on the album track. Still can't decide who sings it, Roger or Freddie or both in a distorted mix? |
philip storey 12.07.2014 09:23 |
Going apeshit ! Do me a favour and don't take things to seriously ! I happen to like the song ,you dont. The song was amazing live with Freddie going mad pushing over mointers and smashing poor Brians mike stand to bits. |

So if you swap to full either full left or full right channel you can only here the screeching noise. When I captured this version I noticed there were 2 layers : the left and right channel and they were quite different. So the first sample is the LEFt channel, it begins with fm his vocals then it will be silent for about 20 seconds then the dentist drilling will begin ;-) The other file is the same capture (timeline) but then only the right channel ! To me it sounds like wheel on a fishing pole, or a bad rusty fence closing. What do you think ? See file attached. 2 small wav files 16 mb. compressed by windows. |

I TOTALLY understand and agree with ThomasQuinn32989 about the sound level at bunches of concerts. It infuriates me and I consider it VERY immoral. I think managers of the places need to be addressed about it and take control of these situations...and NO I am NOT joking. With THAT said I think that Queen did a very good job when I saw them with Paul Rodgers in 2006 with their volume level. With all of THAT said...Jesus H.W. Christ "Sheer Heart Attack" is fucking MINDBLOWING including the screeching!!! God damn I love that shit!!! |

that's why I love Queen they also go hard! |

I adore this fucking song. It is maniac! It is at the super speed of lots distorted sounds. Every one just has different taste for each Queen song. Just that! |
Rick 13.07.2014 07:16 |
The snare sounds weak in this song. A pity, because on the other songs the drums are excellent. |
AlexRocks 13.07.2014 12:37 |
Wouldn't you say that it is more "thrash" than "punk" though musically? |

So ridiculously over the top but inventive at the same time. Quite unexpected too, even from Queen (which is why I love them, I guess). I sure would like to hear some insights from Roger and/or Brian as to how they came up with it. Or maybe the idea came from Freddie... :) |
pittrek 13.07.2014 13:11 |
Not sure why so many people consider this to be punk. It's much closer to heavy metal than to punk |
dysan 14.07.2014 01:49 |
I first heard this song in 1985 when I was about 8 and it became my favourite and still is to this day. One of the few songs that I can play to people and they are staggered that it's queen and more often than not will admit a few weeks later that they downloaded for themselves :) Also, if you get a cheap mic and plug it into your h ifi and wave in front of the speakers with it turned right up you'll get this sound. It's not 'live' or 'guitar' feedback. |
pittrek 14.07.2014 02:20 |
EDIT: Sorry, wrong thread |
dysan 14.07.2014 02:31 |

I just go to the next track when it gets to that part or turn down the volume |

SHA is closer in tempo melody and instrumentation to the likes of Motorhead's debut album (Aug 1977) particularly the tracks "motorhead" and "vibrator". |
