This interview with Brian Blessed about Flash Gordon just changed my view on the film. Now i totally get it!
And i can appreciate Queen's music even more. He speaks with such a passion about that project. Great, great stuff! A legend!
Now i get why comparing this to "Star wars" - like i used to do!- is so unfair because Flash Gordon was a comic book pastiche so to speak. This is really great to listen to.
At 11:10 min he speaks about Queen's music. link
Brian was the driving force behind "Flash Gordon". he was doing a lot of PR for that LP .He mentioned that they were under massive pressure of time at that point.
In the interview (print) he said that he was the member who had the most interests about that project. The final mixing was done by him and Mack.

And i think it's great that when someone is that passionate about the project that the others can step back a little bit and let him do his thing. I think they have created the perfect soundtrack for this movie.
And i don't know if Brian is aware that he created one of the most recognizable songs for a comic book hero. Even if they do a remake of Flash Gordon i think that the song will not change. Even the Ming's theme is epic - Freddie did great too.
Great musical moments!

One would think that but we are biased because we're Queen fans.
Hans Zimmer didn't revisit John Williams' theme for Superman in Man of Steele. Same with Nolan's Batman (also Zimmer) not using Danny Elfman's theme from Batman 89.
About Flash Gordon, wasn't there a short lived TV series a couple of years ago? I don't think it used Queen's song.
To me, it is iconic and by far the best part of the movie but I don't think we'll hear it in any future Flash Gordon releases.
Brian was always the most film-visual oriented out of the four.
The same happens with Highlander. He was the only one to speak about the moovie.
Especially on regards to Who wants to live forever.
And also there is the Starfleet project and that other movie Furia (1999) he wrote the soundtrack for.
Also Akward moment
The famous line of Brian Blessed that builds in to "Goooordon is Aliiiive" begins with "Who wants to live forever." !!!
( he sais that hole line in the begining of the interview of that video posted ubove)
I think Brians subconscious took some mental notes there to use on the next Queen soundtrack.

I thought the same thing!
I think i've identified two lines that became Queen songs some years later for highlander. I don't remember the other one, but you're right about the "Who wants to live forever" line.
I can totaly believe that his subconscious mind did some working around this line at the time of Flash Gordon that was later trigged by the scenes Brian saw of the Highlander movie that contained the exact same line. The rest was easy, Brian on the back of the car and the complete song just flowing through him.
Interesting how live works sometimes.
