This topic arises from Bob Geldof's remark about Freddie's looks. Is Freddie handsome, or not? Freddie has the kind of looks you either love or dislike! Perhaps guys don't find him attractive (straight men, I mean). Maybe girls see him differently... In my opinion, although he does not have conventional good looks, he is really gorgeous in an inexplicable way - 70s Freddie (my personal favourite) and 80s Freddie as well. Even 'opera' Freddie! What is your opinion? |

I think he was quite a handsome guy. |
SmokyQuartz 24.05.2014 13:50 |
I think he was intensely handsome, at times, in the 70's even beautiful. As a young girl I didn't appreciate his looks because I wasn't into the clone look (which I didn't know about anyway) and he was old enough to be my dad. Also until live aid I actually didn't know what had happened to Queen. I used to ask people where was the band that wrote those wonderful songs like we are the champions, etc...people used to say don't know, think they went to Germany or something. Only after he died did I realise he was that magical, fairy like creature I saw on the screen in 1976 (ok I was 6, so that's how I saw it). I was so upset then I went out and bought tribute magazines and I saw pictures that I'd not seen before and realised just how many times he'd changed his look and just how good looking he was. Maybe Bob just couldn't get past the clone look. |

I don't think he did himself any favours with the clone look, but with better teeth, film star good looks. |

As a straight guy - I never rated Freddie's look. To me his music skills, voice, stage performance and charisma matters most. |

He wasn't just handsome, he was more than that, he had the most unique and striking features , very unusual and stood out from the crowd. But yes he was handsome and his charisma and personality shone through in his smiles and performance expressions, he reached the audience in a way other performers cannot hope to do. He was not just a pretty face like so many. He was the equivalent of a great classical painting a work of art, features wise. My critique or thoughts on this is his face was the face of a great artist , and how he used that image was perfection. He was certainly handsome, to say other wise is jealousy. Bob Geldof is jealous of Freddie's teeth so much it causes him to say that. There is no other explanation, and we know that was what he was talking about.my goodness ! Freddie's Teeth were amazing, his Mouth was massive! It was his greatness , his roar'!!! To dismiss his mouth and teeth or want to change them is completely missing the point of Freddie Mercury, and if that changed he would have not looked right, never mind sound right. |

Bob Geldof is one to talk! |

Personally, I thought Freddie in the 70s didn't look that great, but he certainly wasn't ugly. Having seen the video of him in the 60s as a teenager, I think he looked better then than in the 70s. On the other hand I think he looked great in the 80s - I'm not gay, but I like that 'clone' look, I think it really suited him and brought out his Persian features. He even looked really good in 1987, during The Great Pretender and Barcelona time. I think he was the second best looking Queen after Roger. But yeah, Geldof is one to talk! He looks thoroughly unremarkable, while Freddie stood out. Incidentally Sid Vicious also said, in a radio interview, that Freddie looked awful and like "a Turk". But Sid is really just beneath comment. |

Its not the only time someone famous refers to to Freddie as not handsome. I think it was " Status quo" on a Queen documentary saying " you know, the ugly one, the one who sings" ( but that could be taken with a bit of salt cos they were friends, but still holds some basis) And Diana Ross saying " he dosent turn me on" ( ....like we care Diana) The thing about Freddie is that he had very strong features (so angles and lighting played a significant part) and not a western ( Anglo-Saxon/ American) type of look / face stracture wich is the standard to male and female beauty almost globaly. Stronger jawline and chick bones, asian/orianetal eyes and a protruding forehead, not flat like most peoples. ( a bit Neanderthal but in good way ..lol) link Also he was shelf aware not only about his teeth but generally had a constant tention ( what we today use to call a duckface pose). This is not bad of course but he knew what flirted him most and he projected it. So his face was like a canvas combined with his creativity and the alter ego he wanted to project publicly. Its a bit tricky to meassure him in convensional terms of looks. To give you an example in the "I was born to love you" video, (especially in the romantic scenes with that woman) he appears with the looks of a film star of the golden era of the silver-screen.( Rock Hudson , Tom Selleck etc) link On some 70's photos he appears a bit ugly, or like a gipsy or something ( Brian had made a simillar statement about firstly introduced to him) link link link So the thing about if he was hundsome or not bothered me too sometimes. But i should aggre with something stated above. It was the face of an artist! link |

ANAGRAMER wrote: Bob Geldof is one to talk!GOtta agree,..... he's an ugly fuck if there ever was one. Slimy, frail puny welsh looking speckled man. How dare he approach his twisted perspective on someone who was (straight guy talking) pretty damn handsome before his clone queer look. (Excepting the 74-76 Magazíne circuit. He looked terrible. Tacky varnish and velvet. Eck. Straight commenting. I'd say he was most handsome in 1979 and 1991 with his beard. Teeth aside (I hardly noticed them and never judged them) he was a handsome man. The Zandra Rhodes stuff was abominable ... NOT HIM |

I think he was ugly, but I'm a heterosexual man, homosexuals or women will probably have a different opinion. |

I certainly didn't think he was human and I was sad that he had to go (ie lyrics to Bo Rhap). Vivid imagination, children were children in those days :-) |

I don't really think he was necessarily good or bad looking. He didn't look average either. Kind of weird looking; but not in a bad way. |
jazzrazzmatazz 25.05.2014 23:07 |
I remember when I was younger and not a Queen fan, a lot of people around me always commented on how this Freddie Mercury guy looked really ugly, which was weird because the more I looked at photos and videos of him, the more I realized how physically beautiful he actually was, especially in the 1970s. back then, Freddie had those razor sharp cheekbones, dark mysterious eyes and big eyelids, aristocratic nose, plump limps and beautiful olive skin... in my opinion, these are some features that most women and men would kill for. what's there to be ugly? I don't even think his teeth were as bad as most people make them out to be, which are obviously the first thing people notice all the time because they see Freddie singing with open mouth on photos and videos and okay yeah, he certainly did not have the best teeth but he didn't have the worst teeth either! just a few extra ones and that's it. to me this is probably the best photo that captures Freddie's exotic beauty from the early days link at times he looked very mysterious and evil but that's what was so striking about his face features. when you look at someone like young Roger, he was sweet and cute looking but Freddie was the one whose looks were really mesmerizing. I guess it just depends if you're more used to 1970s Freddie or 1980s Freddie, because these are like two completely different people when it comes to physical appearance. and it's obvious that Bob Geldof was reffering to Live Aid Freddie, where all of his beautiful features I mentioned above were overshadowed by his massive teeth and sweaty mustaches. I agree that clone look didn't help him but underneath it all, Freddie certainly was a handsome man |

I think it's a British thing. I remember some quick video bit from the Champions of the World documentary. Some band gets interviewed and says "what's his name? ... the ugly one" (referring to Freddie) Eh each to his own opinion. Personally I'm with Eddie Murphy when he said that rock and roll was cool cause you don't even have to be good looking to get laid. Just look at Mick Jagger. Haha. It's got to be some bit of xenophobic/outsider opinion, causea lot of Brits see Brian, John and Roger as being the good "British boys". World's greatest mug has got to be Pete Townsend. "Real good looking boy" Anyways, funny thread. Non-gay, just saying. Freddie wasn't "ugly" |

One of my favourites. And I totally agree with your opinion. Roger is (was, actually) super cute and good looking, but there wasn't that special something that kept your eyes glued to him. I know I have added this link on another topic, but I really think we should send it to Geldof. To me, the look on the girl's face at 3:54 says it all! That is Freddie's magic! link |

Freddie in the 70s and 80s had the magnetic looks to capture the eye, he was the regal member in Queen he gave the band that magical flavour and thats what Queen was all about, being majestic, royal, regal, i do not think freddie was ugly at all, that is just Geldof been a twat, as usual, because Mercury had more talent in his little finger than Geldof ever had. Mercury was massive in japan because he had the oriental looks to some extent than the other 3 guys in Queen, so he fitted in beautifully. Personally my favourite Freddie era was 1976 /1977. |
shannaschaffer 26.05.2014 12:49 |
That comment of Geldof's bothered me as well. I think Freddie was incredibly handsome. He had an unusual look and he had no bad phase from what I've seen. I didn't even mind the clone look. However, my favorite look was with the beard like in the "I Want it All" video. |

That comment bothered me too... When I first got into Queen I remember not being especially taken with Freddie, but then at some point a switch flipped. I think the "clone" look is alright, my favorite era is late '70's when he got his hair cut fairly short but didn't have the mustache yet, around Jazz and The Game. The transition when he started wearing leather but still wore ballet shoes was great. '76 is probably my least favorite of the glam phase (I spent way too much time thinking about this). But yeah, Freddie's pretty gorgeous and I love all of his incarnations. |

Freddie is like an old friiend. You don't sit and talk to your old friends and wonder if they're attractive or not, you just enjoy their company.I cannot think of a human being that I like as unattractive. |
