So what i am after is a song that was not wrtten by the great man or with Fred on lead vocals, that would have made a top 20 single.Just a bit of fun now that spring is sprung ! My choice would be Tenemant Funster. So you can have a song sung by Fred but not wrtten by and the other way around ,around.around ! |

Sail Away Sweet Sister. Although Spread Your Wings wasn't a top 20 single (in the UK at least) it certainly should have been a massive hit; I simply can't fathom why it wasn't (other than perhaps the influx of punk, but then WATC and WWRY were hits around the same time!) |

There are a few songs, that even achieved just that: Too Much Love Will Kill You (written and sung by Brian) was #5 in the UK and a major hit throughout Europe in 1992. Who Wants To Live Forever? (written by Brian and performed by Dune) rose to #2 in Germany and has been at least a mediocre hit in 1996. Both were released after Freddies death though. If i were to choose an other one from before, i would have a hard time. '39 of the ANATO album or Long Away of the ADATR abum may have been the most obvious choices. May indeed ;) If it was for Roger, I'm In Love With My Car would clearly be first choice, since it is his signature tune. If there should be a version around, sung by Roger, Sheer Heart Attack from the NOTW album would be an excellent choice too. Officially there is none unfortunately, but that one really would suit Rogers voice. There are demo versions of Headlong and Ride The Wild Wind from the Innuendo album around, with Brian and Roger singing those songs, but would they also qualify, since both already reached the Top20 somewhere with Freddie singing them? Now Heaven For Everyone sung by Roger (in 1988) would be a good choice too. It reached UK #2 in 1995 with Freddies vocals, after his death. |

Tenement Funster. I love Rock It (Prime Jive) as well, but the intro was sung by Freddie so I guess it does not count..? |

tcc wrote: No One But YouI might overlook any irony, but though this was neither written nor sung by Freddie, that already made it into any Top20, didn't it? |

Long Away, although it didn't do too well in the US. |
Band Forever 14.03.2014 08:51 |
Once you hear Freddie perform or record a vocal, it doesn't leave any room for other mere mortal vocalists to take a song to a higher dimension. Freddie should have recorded the whole catalouge. |

Just to get it right, with all that crap called music around nowadays, nearly every Queen song could easily make it into the Top20 somewhere, but back then it was significantly harder. And given, that SSOR marked their breakthru (bad pun i know) in Britain, and KQ did the same internationally, it would be highly doubtful, anything else would hit the Top20 again prior to BoRap. So as much, as i like She Maykes Me or Some May One May, i don't think, they would stand any chance. As would Tenement Funster, even if that's one of my faves too. |
philip storey 14.03.2014 15:41 |
I must admit that i do like the track She Makes Me i think it glides into Lap Of The Gods to bring the album to a great end. |

Good choice i like Drowse aswell,it seems i am alone with my choice of She Makes Me.I have been playing some of the Queen albums last night and this morning. What strikes me is how good they sound compared to a lot of rock style releases these days. Can somebody give me a answer, what makesthem still sound so bloody good.I listen to Day at the races and Sheer Heart attack last night and they sounded fantastic. |

She Makes Me is okay, especially as an album track, but I don't think it would even hit the Top 50. Spread Your Wings struck me for many years as a bit dull with a really dull chorus and a good guitar solo... Weird. I've grown to like it though, but I can see why it wasn't a hit. Not the same league as the Champions. Sail Away would have probably stood the only chance. With that in mind, NOBY didn't actually do that bad in 1998 (many people said at the time that #13 was very disappointing). |
The King Of Rhye 17.03.2014 11:10 |
I always liked Long Away (which WAS a single in the US, but flopped!) ...........or should that be Long A-May? heh...... and if they had had a 2nd single from the first album, Doing All Right would have been a great choice! (let's just not even count the horrible single edit of Liar) |

I have noted # 13 UK in any Top30 only (some charts do end there), additionally # 32 PL, # 33 NL and # 75 DE. Summed together this unfortunately is quite disappointing indeed. |

Fair comment. The UK charts are certainly not everything. Having said that, there is no denying that most encyclopedias of popular music pay no attention whatsoever to Euro or World charts. You could probably call it a hegemony of the UK and US in music. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but that's just the way it is. But as I said, point noted. And, in the case of NOBY, I think it's a very good point. |

For some reason this thread came up when I did a search. Just wanted to say that I finally got my hands on copy of the Liar US edit and it's not half bad to be honest. Short, punchy. Hearing the album cut after this would be a treat for sure, but this is great. |

The best single Queen never had was You And I |
Sebastian 23.10.2014 08:44 |
If you consider roughly half of AKOM and Miracle albums were A-sides, had ANATO received the same treatment we would've had at least four singles besides Bo Rhap and Best Friend. Those could have been, based on radio-friendliness: * '39 * I'm in Love with My Car * Good Company * Love of My Life And based on that assumption, plus the band's popularity at the time, the fact they hadn't still pierced public consciousness that much (therefore leaving more room for flexibility in terms of lead singer, etc.) and the way some hit singles sounded at the time, I'd say at least two of those songs would've had a good chance of being top ten either in Britain or America. Three of those four songs were not written or sung by Fred, so there you have it. |
Djdownsy 23.10.2014 09:20 |
Can't say I agree with Good Company unfortunately, it's a grand song, but couldn't see it hitting the top 20. You and I could have, better choice than GOFLB anyway. For the record, I think Spread Your Wings is a nice song, but it's biggest problem is it's production. Hell, the live killers version sounded much better. If it had been recorded for ANATO or ADATR, it could have made it I think. |

Rock it prime jive has some of the most powerful vocals of Freddies 70s era.... It has been mentioned many times from Brian and Roger behind singing their own songs esp on commentary to the video of anato... But... Feel prime jive could have been something special had Freddie sung the whole song |

Not even in a photo. My boss is Thai. Maybe I'll ask her to procure one on her next visit. Best non Freddie single would have been. .... YOU AND I ... since we're only working with a few albums. Either that or a reworking of something off of Fun in Space/Strange Frontier. Always felt Brian's finest singing song as a solo artist was LOVE TOKEN |
